akio··on EU sends Apple stark warning over USB-C charging on new iPhones
Rumor is Apple basically invented USB-C and gave it to the standards body (which includes Samsung, Google, Microsoft, etc.), but didn’t take credit because being associated with Apple would harm its adoption.

Some examples of SaaS companies that use Tailwind on the application side are PlanetScale, Fly.io, Lemon Squeezy, and Supabase.

don't have teams with "design chops"?

Anecdotally, I can tell you that Tailwind is heavily favored by shiny designery startups. Many of the best designed websites these days are built with Tailwind, and design-oriented engineers are reaching for it first.

Back in 2018 I was arguing against utility classes and vetoing their use in projects I was involved with in favor of thoughtfully architected SCSS. By now in 2023 it's clear Tailwind has earned its place in high-end UI development.

akio··on Rust maintainer perfectionism, or, the tragedy of Alacritty (2020)
> The main proposed option is frankly a fairly poor reimplementation of the logo and loses too much of the character of the original logo.

As the designer of the original Alacrity icon[0], the icon proposed in your linked #3926 is close to how I would design the icon for macOS today (although I prefer semanser's version in #4726[1]).

I respect chrisduerr and the talent and monumental effort he's put into maintaining Alacrity over the past couple years, but shutting down the macOS icon proposals—which do not increase the maintenance burden of Alacritty and are obviously strongly desired by Alacrity's macOS users—is not reasonable.

akio··on My approach to taking notes in meetings
Grain[0] is what you're looking for. (Disclaimer: I work at Grain.)

It lets you take notes during your meeting that are timestamped to a recording and transcript.

It also lets you share clips from your meeting both after and live during the meeting. It indexes your transcripts to make your meetings searchable later, and does a lot of other things to maximize the value you extract from meetings.

> As far as I can tell, there's no non-keyboard way to do it. I can't click a button and go up to the parent folder, all I can do is go back, which is confusing if I forget what the previous folder was.

Right-click on the toolbar and select "Customize Toolbar...", then drag the "Path" button into the toolbar.

akio··on Ellie – An Elm Live Editor
> Traditional languages don't let you do [...] Because the parse would expect something to come after that last comma.

Which languages are you referring to? Almost every language I'm aware of allows trailing commas.

C, C++, Java, Python, C#, Javascript (somewhat), Ruby, Objective-C, Perl, PHP, Elixir, Rust, and Go all allow trailing commas.

akio··on Ellie – An Elm Live Editor
I meant what if you wanted to add a new item to the front of a list or change the order of items in the list.

    [ 1
    , 2
    , 3
    ]
to

    [ 0
    , 1
    , 2
    , 3
    ]
diff

    - [ 1
    + [ 0
    + , 1
      , 2
      , 3
      ]
> Other than that, bashing a language for having the convention (that is not forced by the language but by... convention) is quite ridiculous.

It is forced slightly by the language as trailing commas are currently invalid syntax (though this is on the roadmap to be fixed). It's also more than just a convention, as it is explicitly recommended in the official Elm docs.

akio··on Ellie – An Elm Live Editor
What if you want to change the first item of a list? If you're going for smallest diff (which I'm not even convinced is a worthwhile consideration in language design), then allover's example is clearly superior to Elm's current convention.
akio··on Ellie – An Elm Live Editor
That philosophy works better when the style you enforce is, if not happily accepted, at least not moderately controversial. Otherwise many developers will choose simply not to use x-format—or worse, be turned off from the language.

Elm definitely tries painfully hard to be different, which is only exacerbated by its one-true-way attitude.

akio··on Why Tim Cook Is Steve Ballmer and Why He Still Has His Job at Apple
Do you actually own a Magic Mouse? I do. I only charge it every month and a half, and for less than an hour at that. It warns me ahead of time when its battery is running low. I have absolutely no complaints about the way it charges, and I even appreciate the resulting seamless design.

That image symbolizes Apple to me too. For me it represents how many seemingly poor decisions made by Apple often turn out to be less severe than they initially appeared—many even reasonable.
