akho··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
At least GNOME 1 enjoyers seem to have aged out of these discussions.
akho··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
Works on Wayland. Doesn't work in some assclown programs; e.g. claude attempts its own copy-to-clipboard feature, which goes around primary.

I don't understand your initial comment at all, then. You want touchpads to have features they already have, which you haven't tried, because you don't have a touchpad?..

Or was there a different meaning?

Pinch-to-zoom is handled by libinput, and exposed to gtk apps. Works fine in firefox. Works in GtkWebkit views. works in Loupe the image viewer. works in Gnome Maps. Even works in Emacs, ffs.

Are you on X or smth?

The Convention for the Suppression of the Circulation of and Traffic in Obscene Publications, which is ratified by most countries, and only denounced by Denmark, Germany, and The Netherlands, bans most porn.

There are some enforcement issues.

This post is _about_ how that is both possible and common.

Only GPL is somewhat immune, because Stallman was always right.

Lol.

Worked after a couple of tries. Love how the pictured creepy furry pushes blame on the "administrator".

akho··on On Really Trying (2009)
The kids of everyone on that flight went on to good educations and some measure of success. It takes a lot of effort to fuck up. That is the privilege, yes.

Attributing that success to strict parenting and hard work requires quite a lot of extra argument, which the thread starter does not have. Refusing humanity of people who were not on the flight, and did not achieve the same success, is something else entirely.

akho··on On Really Trying (2009)
Of course everyone is influenced by their parents and grandparents. That does not mean their achievement is yours.

The person I was replying to started the comment chain from an abhorrent position of Social Darwinism. Failing to see their privilege, and failing to distinguish their lives from their grandparents' is very common for people holding those opinions.

akho··on Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader
What's the point of getting a DRMed e-book from a library, and then converting it? You are not supporting the author, you are not supporting the library, and you are not even being a good boy, legally. (You also typically get worse files than you'd get through other means)

At that point, there's an IB team handling the deal, an LLC holding the money, and probably several banks holding its accounts. Few banks are happy to handle that kind of concentration in a retail sight account.
akho··on Jabber/XMPP: 25 Years of Digital Independence
Calls are implemented differently across clients, threads only sometimes work. And, apparently from your comment, there's only ever going to be one encryption algorithm, because cryptography is a solved problem now?..
akho··on Jabber/XMPP: 25 Years of Digital Independence
Matrix is in the same place wrt feature mismatches. It's a quality of the problem, not of the solution. I actually think XMPP does a better, more structured job here.
akho··on Stop Making TUIs
A wiki that's somehow not in a browser, a tv remote replacement without obvious keyboard shortcuts, a jupyter lookalike with no editing (as far as I can tell), and two chat interfaces with skills. Good for you, but not like how I use computers.

And Apple are still unable to master cables that don't fray within a few months of use.

I still don't see how Framework's relative youth compensates my issues.

Aren't they all the same api? Are you paying 15 % to change one line, and not, like, three?
akho··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
Well, at least I haven't had the backlight issue.

I did eventually tweak it to a very particular state where it had decent idle power use. Of course, it had to be re-tweaked occasionally.

Apart from that laptop, I've only ever used good-gen Thinkpads (and I'm back on one; the Framework now lives on my son's desk). The whole "we ship a screwdriver" gimmick gets old fast if you have to use that screwdriver on a regular basis (_of course_ they couldn't just use Phillips screws).

akho··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
Yep. Cheapest one from AliExpress works with no issues for four years now, so I shudder to think where they got the ones they shipped.
akho··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
I own the "original" gen11 Intel Framework 13. This is a company that wasn't able to ship a working RTC battery, a touchpad that would register a click when a physical click happened, a screen hinge that would reliably hold the screen in an upright position, or a USB-A port that wouldn't consume a watt of power when unused. You expect way too much engineering from them.
akho··on REO Trucks I4 4WD Pickup Truck Starts at $21,500
There are use cases for public transport. There are usecases for trucks and SUVs. EVs currently seem to be limited to a "city car" role, which is a category that's hard to understand.

akho··on Renting a sewing machine from the library
I'm sorry, but that's not a library. It is useful, but calling these centers "libraries" just accelerates the death of actual libraries, and distracts from copyright reform.
