aketchum··on Bank Failures Visualized
The person who wrote this blog also wrote the very popular and famous D3 visualization library for Javascript. It also looks like this is javascript from the code.
aketchum··on Bed Bath and Beyond files for bankruptcy
Are you sure about this? I believe you would prefer a share value increase of $1 instead of a dividend of $1, as you are taxed on dividends as income (income tax) but stock appreciation is capital gains (lower tax than income tax). This is in the context of American taxes.
aketchum··on Bed Bath and Beyond files for bankruptcy
you are buying a piece of future cash flows from that company, discounted based on risk of realizing those cash flows
aketchum··on A.I. imagery may destroy history as we know it
you still have the issue of "junk in, junk out". Being on a block chain does absolutely nothing to ensure that the information on the chain is correct. There isn't really any reason to use a DAO for this vs a standard database.
aketchum··on StableLM: A new open-source language model
"The richness of this dataset gives StableLM surprisingly high performance in conversational and coding tasks, despite its small size of 3 to 7 billion parameters (by comparison, GPT-3 has 175 billion parameters)."

So they did not explicitly say it is comparable, but implicitly compared the two. I'm curious to evaluate what "surprisingly high performance" means exactly.

aketchum··on StableLM: A new open-source language model
Are they releasing the weights for download? The links to HuggingFace in the readme are giving me 404. This dataset they built on-top of "The Pile" sounds interesting - looking forward to evaluating their claim that 3-7 billion param models can perform on par with 175 billion param GPT-3
aketchum··on Apple Card’s new high-yield Savings account is now available, offering a 4.15 p
It is interesting that there is no direct deposit requirement for this account. Most traditional (Truist, BofA) and competitor banks (Sofi) offer incentives to encourage direct deposit for the end users. I wonder what other strategies Apple will be using to drive deposits in lieu of this.

It is also in Apple's best interest to drive deposits, as most of these agreements end up with the bank (GS) and the provider (Apple) splitting the interest earned. Even if they are currently passing most of the interest to the customer for now, they will want to build up deposits as high as possible so they can lower rates in the future and print money.

aketchum··on JavaScript-algorithms: Algorithms and data structures implemented in JavaScript
congrats on being a pedant! "I write all my production code in the javascript runtime environment called Node.js"
aketchum··on JavaScript-algorithms: Algorithms and data structures implemented in JavaScript
As someone that writes Node as main production language, I will say I am very glad to have been taught my DSA courses in Java. I think a strongly typed language like Java that also requires explicit memory management (if you restrict yourself to using only Arrays) is ideal because you can not ignore things that are abstracted by the language. In python or JS the standard array class is more like ArrayList and it automatically reallocates space when needed. This is hidden from you and you do not realize the additional computations that are occurring and thus you do not learn as well.
aketchum··on Changes at YC
where did this come from? The person you are responding to didn't say anything about Soviet workers. Also, having recently visited Cuba, while workers in a Communist society may not worry about layoffs, they still need second jobs in the black market to earn a living wage. I'm far from an expert in the Soviet Union but it seems crazy to use this as an excuse to shill the USSR
aketchum··on Amazon employees express dismay, anger about sudden return-to-office policy
what if you had wheels instead of feet? there is zero mechanism for this and tech workers have shown again and again that there is not interest in a professional union.
aketchum··on What Happens Now to All the Laid Off Tech Workers? [audio]
their entire function is to serve as a "tax-evading dividend". I fail to see why there is a difference besides on tax revenue for a buyback vs a dividend. Can you expand on why they are so bad? Would you be equally unhappy if an equal amount was spent as a dividend instead of buyback?
aketchum··on Amazon has raised the number of jobs it plans to cut 18,000
stock buy backs are a more tax efficient version of a dividend (at least in theory)
aketchum··on FTX Token, FTT down by more than 80% in less than 24 hours
If you want to legally move the money you still need to do paperwork and pay fees, as well as the additional slippage from introducing a third currency.
aketchum··on FTX Token, FTT down by more than 80% in less than 24 hours
you still have currency risk and exchange rate slippage, but even worse because you are introducing a third currency. Any "innovation" crypto does in cross border payments is skirting regulation which clearly will not scale well. Regulators will just crack down when the market is sufficiently large for their attention.
aketchum··on What the interns have wrought, 2022 edition
This seems fine. There are some schools where it is simply not worth allocating your finite amount of recruiting resources. It by no way means that there are not super smart people at those schools, just that the percentage of students that fit your hiring criteria is too low to justify spending time at those institutions.
aketchum··on Show HN: Simulate dollar-cost averaging in any mix of stocks
yeah, VTSAX or other total market index funds
aketchum··on Ask HN: Are there any blockchain projects NOT around cryptocurrencies?
Any true blockchain (Satoshi style) MUST have a token of value. Thats a huge part of Satoshi's innovation! The miners need to be "paid" in a token native to the blockchain, which is what drives the validation mechanism.

Anything else is just an append only Merkle tree, which has found used for 50 years

aketchum··on Master at Arms Badge for Boy Scouts (1925) [pdf]
I understand what you mean, but I think you chose a terrible example. I will never be in the Olympics, but if I was I would definitely have that on my resume.
aketchum··on I got a computer science degree in 3 months for less than $5000 (2020)
It is the same degree as the on campus program.
aketchum··on Spotify and Google Announce User Choice Billing
I just want to point out that Spotify as a position with the title 'Chief Freemium Business Officer'. Is there also a 'Chief Subscription Business Officer'?

aketchum··on What do people want in a co-founder?
"golf" is just a euphemism that sometimes literally means golf, but other times means any type of social activity that can be used to build relationships. What did you hope was dying off? There will always be a need for people who have and can form strong relationships with rich people who are looking for new investments.

aketchum··on Developer, you may need a co-founder in marketing
I think one of the biggest failures of developers is thinking that tech means anything when launching a business. Tech that works is table stakes. If nobody knows about your product then it may as well not exists, from a business perspective. If you want to start a business, the marketing and customer acquisition strategies are as important (if not more important) than the tech. Someone has to make sure your potential customers know your solution exists. It can be the founder or it can be a VP of Growth, but it is a job that must be done or else you may as well not waste your time writing the code in the first place.
