akeck··on I only lost 10 minutes of data, thanks to ZFS
Are you willing to share your script? I'd like to compare it to mine to see if I've missed anything. Thanks!
akeck··on Don't fire your illustrator
There's also the issue that SD/MJ-generated images cannot be copyrighted in the US.
akeck··on Spotify looked to ban white noise podcasts to become more profitable
We specifically use an app called White Noise for this type of thing. It has all the noise colors (I prefer pink noise), doesn't stream, and plays without ads.
akeck··on AI bots are now better than humans at decoding CAPTCHAs
Something I've wondered about is how CAPTCHAs are ADA-compliant. Ironically, this tech may end up helping people who are impaired from doing CAPTCHAs use websites. Just the other day, I watched a friend of mine who has vision health issues do several CAPTCHA rounds to use a state website.

Edit: There's various efforts: https://captcha.com/captcha-accessibility.html

akeck··on Elite College Admissions Data Suggests Being Very Rich Is Its Own Qualification
My recollection is that there were also scoring changes for the SAT in 2010s that significantly reduced its predictive power.
akeck··on The internet didn’t kill counterculture, it's just not on Instagram (2021)
For private mobile filtering, some folks do something along the lines of:

* $5/month VPS running Wireguard and pihole

* Use iOS/Android Wireguard app to route all traffic through VPS with local VPS pihole as your Wireguard DNS server.

akeck··on Tell HN: Hulu does not allow subscription cancellation
Write a letter canceling your account and send it via certified mail to their legal correspondence address.
akeck··on Ask HN: What are you working on?(Non-software projects only)
Trying to figure out elder care for three aging parents.
akeck··on Examples using Photoshop’s new “Generative Fill” feature
(IANAL) Given the US Copyright Office's guidance on the lack of protection for AI generated art, doesn't this tool harm the ability of artists/photographers/agencies to protect their works? Will people starting blanket stealing of content using the "It was AI generated." defense?
akeck··on Carmakers like VW are bringing back buttons because drivers loathe touch screens
Mazda rightly banned touchscreens awhile ago.
akeck··on Google pushes .zip and .mov domains onto the Internet, the Internet pushes back
Pair it with .sys for the perfect Windows combo.
akeck··on Ask HN: Why are students taking handwritten notes? Typing is much more efficient
Efficient for what, though? It's certainly faster for rote recording of information, but I learn complex information in less time when I hand-write it out. Also, you have to be really well-practiced in LaTeX math packages to type arbitrary math well. Hand-writing math is much more straightforward with limited learning time.
akeck··on Ask HN: I am overflowing with ideas but never finish anything
I used to be like that, but am now more of a finisher. It's habit you have learn and then consistently practice. It includes learning to be done vs perfect ("perfect is the enemy of good"). Sometimes perfect is important to finishing, sometimes not. It's also important to know when to let things go. Sometimes a project's time has passed. To get started with the practice, start with a small thing you've started, take the mindset "I'm going to practice finishing", and then finish it. The first few times will be hard, but you'll get better every time you go all the way through to finish.
akeck··on AWS Account Owner Died
Amazon apparently reached out on the thread:

akeck··on GPT makes learning fun again
Fun with caveats I'm finding. Today I asked for an outline of DevSecOps concept based on CISA recommendations. The CISA doc it referenced doesn't actually exist.
akeck··on Chemists tackle the tough challenge of recycling mixed plastics
This sounds a little like Licella's CaT-HR technology for breaking down different plastics into compounds that can be used as industrial inputs.
akeck··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
I built a pipeline to go from a novel file in Apple Pages to finished Kindle Book and PDFs in various sizes, both with proper scene breaks, etc.

akeck··on Chess, unlike war, is a game of perfect information
In interviews, (US) General Stanley McChrystal has said he prefers backgammon to chess because it involves both strategy and chance.
akeck··on California to lend 20% down payments with 0% interest for homebuyers
Heh. So, we did a similar two loan structure back in 2004. It got us into the house, but paying both loans at once was stressful for several years until the family income finally caught up enough to provide a comfortable margin of safety.
akeck··on Why is sea level rise worse in some places?
Yes. I've seen its tides in person. It's almost unreal. Boats go from sitting on their sides on dry land to floating in 3+m of water and back every tidal cycle.
akeck··on Why is sea level rise worse in some places?
The affect of sea level rise on the Bay of Fundy is going to be... interesting.
akeck··on Why are weather apps still so terrible these days?
Apple's new weather app is fun lately. My SO and I will sit next to each other on the couch, each with the new Apple weather app open to our town. The two instances of the app will show contradictory information. In most cases, neither instance of the app reflects what's actually going on outside. We live just outside a major city so it's not like we're in an unknown area. Needless to say, I really miss Dark Sky and mostly use the NWS mobile site now. -_-
akeck··on Ancient soldiers used sound to frighten and confuse their enemies (2022)
To this day, martial arts like Aikido incorporate a shout (in Aikido, it's called "kiai") to boost the impact of a move.
akeck··on We're Knot Friends
This wonderful article made my day!
akeck··on Managers, stop distracting employees
It seems these days that using Jira is primarily about making work legible in large orgs.

akeck··on Tell HN: LTSE Equity Is Sheisty
Honestly, this is perhaps more of a "talk to your lawyer" thing than an HN thing.
