ake1··on Ask HN: What is the best Linux distro for a development laptop?
i too would recommend defining aliases. if not for UX reasons, for brevity and consistency. i use the same (short) commands for pacman as for apt or yaourt.
ake1··on Portainer, a UI for Docker
I am fairly certain I've used one, do not recall the name.

ake1··on Tim Cook assures employees that Apple is committed to the Mac
pretty much everything has a vi-mode these days. all shells, tmux, browser via extension (vimperator/vimium/cvim/surfingkeys) or by default (uzbl et al), wm by configuration or default (bspwm/i3/awesome etc.). intellij even has support for an .ideavimrc which surprisingly works quite well.
ake1··on Visual Studio Code 1.6
i install every new release of vscode because i think it has the potential to become a good editor but the vim plugins are still far from good enough for me to use on a regular basis.
ake1··on Vim Anti-Patterns
ctrl+[ is closer but with an already over-used right pinky it is a bad idea. i much prefer jk as <esc>.
ake1··on Vim Anti-Patterns
the inability to press left ctrl with the top right of your left hand palm is an unfortunate side effect of most laptop keyboards.
ake1··on Vim Anti-Patterns
i tried switching from vim to spacemacs but all i got was a bunch of keybinds brought back to my .vimrc such as <space>fs instead of :w (:update) that saves my right pinky for less used commands.
ake1··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
it is quite close to stock android and i think it is quite unfortunate that it is not actually stock android. your critique, while somewhat valid, is not of the oneplus3 but of google's applications.
ake1··on Vim 8.0 released
speed is the main reason i'm not using spacemacs, it has problems just rendering it's own default config file when navigating around it (granted i'm stuck on windows at work which is far from optimal).
ake1··on Learn the ways of Linux-fu, for free
think some keys got mixed up here:

h or the left arrow - will move you left one character

j or the up arrow - will move you up one line

k or the down arrow - will move you down one line

l or the right arrow - will move you right one character

ake1··on Netflix Will Be the Exclusive US TV Home of Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar
welcome back to the free service that is easier to use.
ake1··on A language that compiles to Bash and Windows Batch
but you don't need opam to run the compiled scripts...
ake1··on Reason: A new interface to OCaml
it loads but the scrolling is at like 2 fps. thank god for reader view. ff46
ake1··on Today I accept that Rails is yesterday’s software
and if you need to shave a couple of minutes off of that there's always http://start.spring.io/
ake1··on The Best Linux Distros of 2016
i usually stick to things with aptitude or pacman.
ake1··on The Best Linux Distros of 2016
i wish there was a distro that worked well with my hardware out of the box, preferably without any applications that i do not explicitly choose to install.

i have no interest in setting up pulseaudio/alsa or having to set nomodeset in my grub config for the 20th time.

ake1··on Continuous Deployment at Instagram
we use it for a fairly large postgres database (growing 4-5GB a day) and haven't had any big issues so far. currently looking at a sort of catch-22 issue at the moment where the application running flyway also reads information from the database to initialize some caches and that data is inserted and maintained by another application. this works fine on an already initialized database but not for the automated testing server where the data is wiped.
ake1··on GNU/kWindows
I've never really understood the FSF's incessant need to claim GNU as the operating system which happen to be running on x kernel. There are operating systems running the linux kernel without any GNU software. The operating system is whatever is between the hardware and my application. The lines are somewhat blurred in my opinion, is /bin/ls part of the operating system? (both rhetorical and not...)

Granted, free software would not be where it is today had it not been for GNU and the FSF and they do deserve a lot of credit for their hard work from which i am benefiting every day.

ake1··on Bash on Ubuntu on Windows
maybe he's actually curling https://please-pwn-my-computer-so-hard.own-domain.com/script... ?
ake1··on Visual Studio Code March Update
still missing vim keybinds it looks like, would've been interesting to try it out as it looks to be shaping up nicely.
ake1··on GitLab 8.5 released
it does look like it says MAX 1200...but i could be mistaken.
ake1··on GitHub is undergoing a full-blown overhaul as execs and employees depart
it is generally hard to navigate, every time i'm adding a user and giving him access to groups/projects i have to spend a minute to figure out where. the new CI gui is worse than the old one (pre-8).
ake1··on GitHub is undergoing a full-blown overhaul as execs and employees depart
been using gitlab for the past two years at work and the only time it's inaccessible is when upgrading it. it does have a lot of other issues like response time and a difficult to navigate ui but crashing is not one of them.
ake1··on Show HN: Skadi – self-hosted Trello alternative with a 10 second installation
two docker run commands is easy enough and could be considered a one liner install.
ake1··on Ubuntu 16.04 – Online searches in the dash to be off by default
the compact disk is not dead?
ake1··on Mozilla Will Stop Developing and Selling Firefox OS Smartphones
they had ads but only in the free version, if you bought opera there were no ads.
ake1··on Why you might want to choose Ceylon
you might want to look into changing to another keyboard layout. as a swede, using altgr+[7-0] to get (curly)brackets is just ridiculously cumbersome compared to say a us layout.
ake1··on Babun: a Windows shell
i'm forced to use windows as a host to my dev environment at work and i have yet to find a fast enough console/shell. even when you remove plugins and whatever else babun provides to the standard zsh setup it's still not fast enough to do simple things such as cd with some tab-completion a couple of times a second as i'd normally do at home. the closest thing to somewhat useful i've found is "git for windows" but it too sometimes get stuck sometimes just changing directories and tab-completing. i'm using a reasonably new i5 thinkpad and i don't think close to instant feedback in a text-only environment is too much to ask.
ake1··on Windows 10 users are being banned from torrent sites
> I'd rather complain about the fact that the default filesystem is case insensitive, for instance.

i see that as a positive thing.

ake1··on VirtualBox 5.0 officially released
from what i understand it, hyper-v is only supported by a couple of distros and even then, the performance gains are not that noticable. definitely worth looking into none the less, thanks.
