akaij··on Tesla sues Swedish state agency over number plate blockage
If you didn't involve the authorities to exercise your rights, it sounds more like anecdotal experiences with those particular stores than the entire EU "sucking ass".

How is it theft? Nobody is touching the plates.

akaij··on Ask HN: What do you use to replace incandescent lights?
I have a 20/strip Nichia 757 2700K LEDs with CRI 90+ [1] taped on the back of each monitor, cost me around €25 with the appropriate power supply [2]. I control them with a Shelly RGBW2, which I bought for an additional €20.

I run them at between 25-50% brightness most of the time.

akaij··on Google's advanced music generation model and two new AI experiments
If we're fast-forwarding the tape, why not directly go to the ultimate conclusion that the end game is AI replacing humans, period?

This is not a slippery slope; new art will be created regardless of incentives and skilled people who learn to augment their craft with AI will probably create better works of art.

akaij··on How to attach logic probes to tiny SMD components (2021)
Tangentially, does anyone know if there are any off-the-shelf or DIY solutions to overcome hand tremors while soldering?

I have read about micromanipulators:

- off-the-shelf (https://www.singerinstruments.com/solution/mk1/specification...)

- DIY (https://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php...) (https://retrotechjournal.com/2017/10/03/make-yourself-more-p...) (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S246806721...)

They are very interesting, but don't seem to be suitable for soldering.

akaij··on Career Advice (2013)
I would say that is a pretty good time to re-evaluate a lot of things: 20s behind you, slightly matured, more time alone, able to do healthier introspection. At least it was, in my own timeline! I didn't begin climbing out of my mess until 30 :)
akaij··on LTS kernels are no longer supported for 6 years because no one used them
I'm sure the nuance is not lost on the people that made the decision.
akaij··on LTS kernels are no longer supported for 6 years because no one used them
If for-profit companies need to use older kernels, they can hire engineers using the profits?
akaij··on Gokrazy is cool
I don't think it would be too wild to imagine that, maybe, this article isn't meant for you. It does seem perfect for other people that might benefit from a primer on the background.

Good storytelling comes in many shapes and forms, maybe the author was trying to use anticipation as the main element!

I really don't understand the surprise you're apparently filled with when coming across an article that's not presented in the way you expected; an imaginary problem that stops existing once you scroll down or do a keyword search.

Unsolicited recommendation, if I may: do not watch Pulp Fiction.

akaij··on Gokrazy is cool
You've just made me appreciate the privilege of having the ability to scroll up and down without having to read it all. Thanks!

The last paragraph reads similar to the "depressed people should just drink water, exercise, touch grass and walk in the sun while trying to be more cheerful" advice that could be seen every so often, but since I haven't seen them recently, I thought we were past it.

> Decades later, Nirvana is still a topic of discussion because of it (and still earning royalties), ...

I think the album's popularity and the royalties aren't solely attributable to the cover :)

> We don't need to exploit children as a form of creative expression...

There is no pornography, no sexual abuse, in fact there's nothing sexual about it at all, and the parents were paid for the photo. Please help me understand how it constitutes exploitation.
