HN RSS feeds per user no longer available

Not sure how long these feeds have been broken, just noticed today. I used per-user RSS feeds to follow a few posters who generally write on subjects I'm interested in, but now they aren't resolving.

Typically used this format: https://hn.algolia.com/userfeed/<username>

Is there an alternative available or is the RSS option gone permanently?

This isn't a HN feature - it's an Algolia feature. They just updated it about a week ago - I'd imagine it's related to that. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37870077

I don't like the idea of people being scared of RSS. Why drop something like this? If someone has really good ideas i'd like the option to get notified in a simple feed.

There is https://hnrss.github.io that does a pretty good job. A user's RSS feed is https://hnrss.org/user?id=sarcher

Using this for many years, it's also a nice way to see the comments of people you want to "follow".

That's good and I'm glad it exists, but shouldn't this be a native feature?

It's odd that HN itself doesn't provide this.

You can get at a user's comments using: https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=<user>

Furthermore, there is an API.

RSS is just a different representation of the same thing.

A more interesting source would be https://news.ycombinator.com/submitted?id=<user>

You might want to try Hacker News RSS at https://hnrss.github.io/#user-feeds

Damn, if this feature existed that is really cool. Are there any other undocumented HN features like this? This actually seems like a really good idea.

I subscribe to my own replies so I know when people reply to me. This is yours.

Shameless plug: my app called HACK on both iOS and Android has push notifications for when people reply to you.

Reading this on HACK right now, love the app! I’ve actually ditched Octal, specifically because of this notification feature.

Glad you enjoy it!

Hi! Is the app available anywhere outside the play store or is it open source? I don't have google play services.

I use Hacki on Android. An open source HN app, can find it on f-droid or play store :)

Sorry, no, the app is only available on play store and iOS App Store.

Nice features. If I like it enough I could get the paid version.

I also just added this as a feature to https://catnip.vip

So very, very many undocumented features.

Hey thanks; great link!

How do you consume your RSS?

It's always been something i've felt like i'd benefit from but have never found an app/workflow that works for me.

In the distant past, I self-hosted Tiny Tiny RSS, accessed it from a web browser and an Android phone, and liked it. I didn't have any problems with it but just never got around to setting it up again when I migrated VMs.

Now, I've been using NewsBlur (mostly on iOS, rarely on desktop) ever since Google Reader shut down. I don't have too many subscriptions but a couple folders for online comic strips, status pages or blogs of things I pay for (email service provider, etc.), and some software projects (Kubernetes, etc.).

Shameless self-plug - I'm working on a product that supports aggregating RSS feeds: https://looking-glass.app It works differently than the other RSS readers I've tried. It's in early stages, so feedback is highly appreciated.

Fan of inoreader myself.

Oh man, if only I knew this existed! There were some high-profile people who I would have loved to follow along with...

i had no idea this feature existed. interesting

I could use a feature like that.
