ajpgrealish··on Deploys blocked on Fly.io's LHR region, as it is out of capacity
Deploys are blocked for us, as our deploy needs to run a release_command. It really seems that this issue should have been foreseen and prevented, and is making my question the choice to rely on fly.io for a production environment.
ajpgrealish··on The grid isn’t ready for 300M EVs by 2030
Upgrading the power lines isn't the full answer, certainly some upgrades will be required, but the wires are designed for peak demand. EVs have flexibility, and can mostly be charged in non-peak times, drastically reducing the powerline and power station upgrades required.

This flexibility has to be managed, and there are many companies working on this. For example: https://ev.energy/

ajpgrealish··on The grid isn’t ready for 300M EVs by 2030
The post title misses the important "without investment and changes in charging habits". Most EVs can already be controlled to set charging preferences to match lower cost, off-peak charging overnight. However, this isn't the full solution as it can create secondary demand peaks. For example, if everyone in one region has an off-peak rate starting at midnight, you will get a step-change in demand at that time. Midnight onwards may also not be the lowest carbon time to charge as this will change every day as renewables are not predictable. In California right now, charging during the day would have lower emissions Source: https://app.electricitymaps.com/zone/US-CAL-CISO

Many people are already thinking about this problem, including https://ev.energy. We go one step further and actively control EVs and EV Chargers to match their charging to when the grid is most clean. This may be overnight, but it could also be during the daytime when solar generation is highest. It is better for the grid not to use simple peak/off-peak pricing, but instead create tariffs that reward flexibility and move the exact charging times to best suit the grid.

ajpgrealish··on Ask HN: What API's do people wanna buy/pay for?
I would like an API which provides consumer electricity cost data globally. There is a huge amount of potential for internet connected energy consumers to optimise their usage against carbon emissions and energy costs. Carbon emissions are available for a lot of countries through APIs like https://app.electricitymaps.com/map and https://www.watttime.org/, but consumer energy costs is much harder to find. There are some APIs that give some pricing data for the purposes of comparing suppliers in competitive markets, but few of these give accurate time-of-use costs for energy. https://www.genability.com/signal/ covers the US and a few other markets quite well, but doesn't have complete and global coverage.

Small Robot Company have a robot called Dick which uses "Non-Chemical Weeding", i.e. they zap the weed to kill it, and it's root. They use other small robots to do the mapping and planting. I really like the idea of small, specialised robots for different tasks.

ajpgrealish··on Legends Solar – Buy operating solar panels on commercial solar farms
Ripple Energy (https://rippleenergy.com/) in the UK are offering exactly that, but with Wind Farms. You buy into a cooperative that builds and owns the wind farm. The generated energy is sold back to your utility and taken off you energy bill. It's very much like having local renewable generation, but can be used by those like me who live in an apartment and have no way to install solar.

There are apps that can automate this whole process for you, monitoring the charge your cars needs each night and the dynamic energy prices either on an Economy 7 or Agile tariff and then controls the charging to optimise the price. If you're car needs less charge than your off peak rate time period then it will charge at the lowest carbon times. https://ev.energy

ajpgrealish··on New 2MW electric vehicle chargers could revolutionise mining industry
There is an example of this at the Lumawan Copper Mine in Zambia. It's trucks are powered by overhead cables and electric motors whilst driving up the fixed ramps, It then switches to diesel when moving around away from the ramp. What is really interesting is that this not only reduces fuel use but allows them to move up the ramps much more quickly and improves productivity of the mine.

GemFair | React Native Developer | London | ONSITE | gemfair.com

GemFair is a digital solution which connects artisanal miners to global markets. GemFair is a London based, dynamic and fast-growing startup which is financially backed by the De Beers Group, making it well positioned to become a game changer in a market primed for innovation.

GemFair has been operating for a year, piloting the first version of its digital solution in Sierra Leone. Its digital solution can be used to on-board and manage member mines and then allow the logging and selling of ethical sourced diamonds to GemFair. The users of the technology are the miners who own and operate the mines, the GemFair team who manage the membership and the expert diamond buyers who ensure a fair price is paid. You will join a 4-person product team to continue development of the products based on the learnings from the pilot and help GemFair scale.

We are looking for a React Native Developer to join the team to help grow our product, if you want more details: https://gemfair.com/#join_us

ajpgrealish··on Ask HN: Which developing nations have interesting tech stories at the moment?
There is a lot of work going on using tech to bring energy access to the 1.2 billion people currently living without grid access.

BBOXX are using the combination of developments in renewable, battery tech, big data and IoT to bring down the cost of offering solar energy to people living in the most rural areas of the world. Briefly, we use the above technology to enable a pay-as-you-go solution to energy whereby a customer can sign up for a small and affordable down-payment. We will then dispatch one of our installers to fit the system in the customers house and teach them about how it works. We will then remotely monitor the system over the GSM network to ensure it is providing a reliable source of energy. The customer then pays weekly or monthly using mobile money to keep the system enabled. The data-side of what we do enable us to prove to investors and financiers that we understand our customers and can control repayment rates which means we can continue to grow the number of systems we have deployed.

We currently have most of our units deployed in Rwanda and Kenya through our fully owned retail network but more recently have launched partnerships in Nigeria, Cameroon and Pakistan.
