ajonit··on Tell HN: iOS converts units for highlighted text
It is pertinent to mention that this feature is available starting from iOS 16. In iOS 15, however, it was limited to the spotlight search function.
ajonit··on Tom Lesley has published 40 books in 2023, all with 100% positive reviews
You have a valid point but then for a company of the size of Amazon so deeply in tech, wouldn’t take much to find out that I have a decade old account with several thousand $ of purchase, abiding by the rules all along. The probability of such an account being a competitor would be extremely less.
ajonit··on Google Authenticator now supports Google Account synchronization
If Google ever decides to kick you out of your account, Authenticator data will be gone. Google has done this on several occasions in the past.

I would still prefer independent app for password manager and another for TOTP with backup enabled for all.

ajonit··on Tom Lesley has published 40 books in 2023, all with 100% positive reviews
True that. It is so bad that once I sent a irrefutable proof of the seller incentivising reviews, Amazon didn’t take any action at all.
ajonit··on Email yourself from a Google Sheet
I had a script email me if my website’s Alexa rank would increase vis-a-vis previous day and log every day rankings with a nice graph in the sheet. Lots of fun stuff can be done with Google sheets/scripts.
ajonit··on Show HN: A 15 min daily stretch routine for desk workers
Kudos! Desk workers are going to love this. You have kept the duration short and gamified it as well in the form of streaks. It should go viral.

A piece of feedback for the transition between two exercises. You may want to stop the bottom watch altogether during transition and - somewhere on top right -start a simple circular time animation 5..4..3 In the current form the transition looks bit confusing.

In any case, congrats again for the launch.

ajonit··on Ask HN: How was your experience of introducing coding to kids?
Thanks for your perspective.

>> At seven a child is only half way to fourteen and fourteen is an early start on programming.<<

I had a similar thought running in my mind but then till the time we introduce her to XYZ how will we gauge if it is of interest to her or not.

ajonit··on Your.Online: Gandi continues its development
CloudFlare. They provide domain names at wholesales rates (no commission in between). No upselling, no spam emails. 've Been a happy customer since the time they introduced their domain name registration (and transfer) services.
ajonit··on Ask HN: Resources to learn state of the art SEO
Other than ensuring you have basics of on-page SEO right, it’s basically about good content. There are tons of gimmicky material around, no need to follow that.

Let your content be so good that people want to link back to you.

Other than that, stick with the basics and read Google guidelines (as another commentator pointed out.)

Source - My experience of ranking few of my own websites in last 14-15 years.

ajonit··on Ask HN: Technology/creative books and games for my daughter (7 years)
I can relate to you, always looking for activities that are both fun and productive to keep her busy. Every evening I spend time and let speak her mind, her thoughts about school or whatever goes in her mind. She has never ending "Why?" :)

Few things she had liked so far -

World/Asia/Country specific maps arranged as puzzles.
  Legos/Block games.
  Coloring books.
  Cycling.
Starting scratch this weekend - https://scratch.mit.edu/
ajonit··on Google CEO Sundar Pichai Says Search to Feature Chat AI
I’m sure Google must be feeling the heat by now, but we need to determine the percentage of non-tech users who are utilizing ChatGPT vis-a-vis Google search.
ajonit··on Tiny, cheap smart speakers unlocked the rise of digital payments in India
Fraud was another reason for the emergence of these sound boxes. Android store was filled with fake payment screenshot generator apps. People would show the (fake) payment screenshot and leave the shop premises (saying “must be a network problem at your end.”)

After multiple complaints from merchants, Paytm and the likes innovated this affordable idea.

ajonit··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you received in 2022?
Listen to both the sides in an argument/fight/confrontation even if version of one side sounds plain obvious.

(A timeless advice, not really an advice received in 2022)

ajonit··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you received in 2022?
Little daughters are God’s way to show us mini-heaven on Earth.
ajonit··on iPhone freezes when hit share button
You may want to wait for some time to check if it reoccurs. Several users reported initially that it fixed the problem but later realized it was only a momentary fix.
ajonit··on iPhone freezes when hit share button
This issue is occurring on tons of iPhones for last several months. Apple does not bother. After the initial template response on the thread, they haven't even acknowledged the issue despite the fact it is reported by several hundred users.
ajonit··on Ask HN: How do you use Notion?
Notion has built in web clippers for iOS/Android and a chrome extension for desktop.

1 click to save any article from any device.

ajonit··on Ask HN: How do you use Notion?
It's a great tool. I use it for almost everything

- Bookmarking. Notion downloads the complete article not just links to it.

- Idea dump.

- Notes dump for any new learnings.

- Health records.

- Simple inventory Management. ...

Idea is to have a single app for all references. Works great across Desktop and iOS.

What I want?

1 click backup/restore.

Given that a lot of my data goes in it, and companies these days have a poor record of kicking-out users (and not telling them why) for the slightest of mistake. I would like to have some automated way to back-it-up on a daily basis.

ajonit··on Find a good available .com domain
Just wanted to say thank you for this service. Have been using this site for several years now. Perhaps the first place I visit whenever I need to research a domain name, have recommended it to tons of people already.

Do you have any write up on its tech stack?

ajonit··on Ask HN: How to break anxiety/fear-avoidance cycle?
What’s your average screen time over a week/month?

In my discussion among friends and family, excessive mobile usage has turned out to be the #1 cause for anxiety issues. (especially among self employed people)

ajonit··on Ask HN: What are the best TLDs to rely on for the long-term?
.com - In all probability the domain ideas you first come up with would be unavailable. Get creative and secure short, pronounceable domain but don’t look beyond .com.
ajonit··on Back to India
> Hahahaha, there’s always a few of you.

Looks like a template attack against those who doesn’t agree with you.

Anything I would say, you would attack it in a long winded response without trying to absorb other’s pov.

That you have touched the topic of dowry harassment, go and meet some good criminal lawyers in India from HC/SC. Don’t just read propaganda. They will clear all your misconceptions about just “few false cases” etc. (More than 90% of dowry cases turn out to be false)

ajonit··on Back to India
ThePrint , thewire are all part of the propoganda outlets that have popped up in the last few years.

I am not saying casteism isn’t present in India but the way you are projecting is way over the top , especially in urban areas.

Do you know anything about the stringent SC/ST act.? It has now been abused so much against the upper caste , that few years back Supreme Court had to intervene and direct the Govt to not immediately arrest in case of an FIR. There was a huge protest by the SC/ST community over this order and within few weeks Govt had to bow down and pass an ordinance to repeal the order by Supreme Court.

Just Google about “misuse of SC/ST act India” it is mind boggling.

ajonit··on Back to India
> Nobody wants to do business with them

Last I know all major nations and big corporations of the world are queuing up to invest in India.

ajonit··on Cryptocurrencies – An Assessment by Reserve Bank of India
Saying “devalued”, OP referred to the Nov 2016 demonetisation of INR 500 and 1000 currency notes that happened in India.
ajonit··on Cryptocurrencies – An Assessment by Reserve Bank of India
This from the same government that already devalued the currency used by the same people they want to be trusted by It was “demonetised”. To be fair and accurate context, a window of few months was provided to get the demonetise notes replaced with the equivalent amount of new notes.
ajonit··on Cryptocurrencies – An Assessment by Reserve Bank of India
Everyone should read this. I loved this assessment of cryptocurrencies, with no usage of any complex financial jargon.
ajonit··on 80% of orgs that paid the ransom were hit again
It is Sales101 - Getting business from an existing customer is easier than on-boarding a new one.
ajonit··on Ask HN: Tools you have made for yourself?
Great idea! Develop this as a standalone solution. There is a huge market open for you.
ajonit··on Inexpensive Countries Where $2k/Month Buys the Good Life
Shitting - 1.3B would have extinct by now if everyone was doing that. Food and water changes take time to get acclimatised.

Power - you must have been in poor quality apartments. In most prominent cities, there is hardly any power outage even then We have 100% power back up here in most apartments in Gurgaon and most cities in India.

Truly, one can live like a king in India for $2k in most cities. You have house help, driver, cleaner, gardener, masseur, baby sitter etc available for dirt cheap. I pay Rs 500/- (~$7) for an hour of massage with masseur providing service at home itself.

I am not saying all is fine with India but yes if you know your way around, you choose good cities to live, you can truly live life king size here compared to any other country.
