In my observations of law enforcement, it seems only a small portion are interested in being proper police. The vast majority uses it as a way to gold power, and over a career, that power erodes the human side.
I think there are two mindsets here. Russia is a gangster, brutal and clumsy, yet rational. However Russia is also barely hanging on to first world status, they are not a global balance of power threat. China is a threat to shifting the balance of power decisively towards China and away from America and the West. They mean it when they say this will be the China century.
I have a theory: It’s compariable to the early days of credit cards. Suddenly you have this money you can spend, and you reason that you can put off worrying about it until later. Suddenly people think hey why should we pay the mortgage or the rent, let’s use that money for other things. Just like its credit. The next thing you know you’ve maxed out the card, gone six months without paying rent, and suddenly have this thing due.
It amazes me that the law would allow someone to simply claim someone else's dwelling as their own. I understand on one side we must have tenant protections, but the definition of a tenant should be updated to one that is legally entitled to be within the dwelling by the say of the owner. Because in many American states, it is a perfect formula for extortion.
I want more companies to follow this. Age is a good thing in most industries, maybe all. I think silicon valley’s stock market drove it towards a “younger is cheaper and will work for free lunch” and that pushed our elders out.
Does this not defeat the whole purpose of cryptocurrency? The fact that a government can control its transparency, anonymity, the “currency” is now just a digital object, like any other in a bartering system. I don’t like that a government can trace and identify payment. Perhaps that is nihilistic but it speaks for me to the heart of freedom.
Where does the money come from? Is it that they don’t have to go to back to work because of the rent moratorium? At some point you have to buy food and pay the utilities. What else could be stopping people from going back to work?
With my phone I won’t accept any more updates, at least the ones I can resist, and I’ll switch to Android when there’s no other option. CSAM is a line crossed too far and I feel like Apple is telling me I’m just not holding it right again, and that makes me unhappy.
My wife has a conspiracy theory: The reason why mask mandates are being extended is so that facial recognition has practice recording and analyzing faces that are covered.
It’s interesting to read the pro Chinese propaganda on HN. It’s too bad we can’t see the region from where those comments are coming from. It saddens me that people are forced to stand up for a regime that massacres and enslaves its own people.
Against whom? Where is the profit mechanism? Are the hackers really prepared to track down every patient and try to blackmail them? It’s like the emails you get some times from hackers that have an old password of yours and threaten to release that video of you pleasuring yourself. Seriously?
Agreed, but what is missing from all of these explanations and defenses is a concrete plan for exiting SAH and lockdown orders. Where does it end, or is it preferable that it never ends?
