aiyodev··on Millionaire hacker gets 9 years in death of man building nuclear bunker tunnels
He was just a millionaire. Musk is a billionaire. The first letter in those words makes all the difference.
aiyodev··on Two potentially life-friendly planets found orbiting a nearby star
Over the last two decades we’ve gone from not knowing if there were any planets in other solar systems to knowing that almost all of them have planets. We now know the second factor in the Drake equation is nearly 100%.

We don’t yet know the third factor yet, the percentage of planets capable of supporting life. But we do know about 22% of planets are small enough to possibly be rocky and are within the “habitable zone” of a star.

So a possible answer to your first question is that it’s likely 0-22% of stars have at least one planet capable of supporting life like that on Earth. This doesn’t say anything about moons or asteroids or the probability of life developing on a body that could support it.

aiyodev··on We launched an app with $500k annual revenue, and then Apple copied it
> looks like it was kind of a hack

Where do you think you are?

aiyodev··on Why Hong Kong Is Still Marching
No. Gerrymandering is something a political majority does to hurt the minority.

Texas was a reliably blue state until Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992 without winning Texas. Before that it was thought no democrat could win without winning Texas. Democrats stopped spending money in the state and George W. Bush became governor in 1994. Republicans have controlled both houses of congress and every statewide position since the 90s.

There's a chance Trump might change that as he is less popular among republicans in Texas than he is nationwide.

aiyodev··on Browser tabs are probably the wrong metaphor
Thanks! I'll give that a try.
aiyodev··on Why Hong Kong Is Still Marching
Yeah. It's unlikely to work.
aiyodev··on Why Hong Kong Is Still Marching
The Texas secession movement doesn't claim a right to secede. Texas retains the right to split into five states. They plan to use the threat of adding 8 right-leaning senators to the US senate to convince democrats to let them leave.
aiyodev··on Browser tabs are probably the wrong metaphor
This seems like a good place to ask. There was a Firefox extension called (edit: not sure if it was Tab Mix Plus or something else) that was discontinued after Firefox 57. It was super productive and still haven't haven't found anything like it to replace it.

To be clear, I'm talking about grouping tabs but I'm not talking about the current Firefox feature called "Tab Groups". You had a row of tabs that showed the web pages open in the current group. And you had a second row of tabs that allowed you to switch between tab groups. You could close a tab group and close all the tabs within the group.

Has anybody found an alternative even if it's in a different browser? I dislike having multiple browser windows open.

aiyodev··on Apple Is Listening
> you have to visit an Apple-approved repair center to have a specialist perform the upgrade, which costs more than doing it yourself

That has not been my experience. The Apple store just refreshed my 2015 Macbook pro: new screen, new bottom case, new fan, etc. Did not charge me anything.

Apple products last much longer than others and are much cheaper to maintain.

aiyodev··on After 38,000 layoffs, Wall Street wakes up to 'peak car'
> The most dramatic example of just how vulnerable automakers are came from Britain last week. The country prides itself on being the Detroit of Europe.

Now I understand Brexit. Good job, Britain. You’ll soon look just like Detroit.

aiyodev··on Justice Department Is Preparing Antitrust Investigation of Google
Antitrust also covers government. If Google colluded to pass laws to prevent competition, they broke the law.
aiyodev··on U.S. Army: “How has serving impacted you?”
The US makes living difficult for the poor so that they think joining the military is a good choice. If homes were affordable, if college was affordable, if healthcare was affordable, nobody would want to join.

We force poor people to join so that we'll have a military. We have wars to justify having a large military. We have a large military so that we'll purchase a lot of military equipment. We purchase a lot of military equipment to fuel the economy in specific congressional districts. We prop up those districts so that the people there have jobs and will reelect their representatives. Even the politicians who seem to support the "socialist" programs have no intention of following through with their promises.

aiyodev··on Air conditioner ‘in a patch’ provides portable cooling
You misread the article. They want to save energy by cooling the individual, not the room.

> The use of such devices could reduce the demand for energy to power central air conditioning by 20% in typical buildings, and enhance a wearer’s comfort outdoors, the authors say.

aiyodev··on My Product Is Unexpectedly Being Used to Help People with Dementia
I understand where you’re coming from. But you need to understand HE attacked MY grandmother and every other person suffering from dementia. Why the hell does HN allow his comments but not mine? He gets a pass because he owns a startup? I’m absolutely livid that you allow this double standard.
aiyodev··on My Product Is Unexpectedly Being Used to Help People with Dementia
Mean is psychologically manipulating people, pimping out a dying loved one to raise money for a startup. I employed a rhetorical device called “hyperbole” to show you how your post comes off. I thought this was a cool story until I read this line. As someone who has lost loved ones, I cannot imagine exploiting their condition, reducing their life to an advertisement, for money or internet points. And I resent those that would. I have a grandmother with dementia and was considering showing your service to my wife until I read that line. Something to keep in mind.
aiyodev··on A critical step to reduce climate change
The threat of climate change isn't significant enough for him to liquidate his investments?
aiyodev··on A critical step to reduce climate change
> We can do even more. By investing in energy innovations...

Ok. Do it. You promised to give away your entire net worth years ago but you're still worth $100 billion. What's the hold up?

aiyodev··on San Francisco Police Raid Journalist's Home After He Refuses to Name Source
If you surprise him by suddenly breaking down his door, there's a chance he'll make the wrong gesture. Then you get to kill him saying you felt threatened.
aiyodev··on Amazon rolls out machines that pack orders and replace jobs
> Automation is a scary specter off in the distance but it's not as actively harmful to people's livelihoods.

http://nber.org/papers/w23285

> According to our estimates, one more robot per thousand workers reduces the employment to population ratio by about 0.18-0.34 percentage points and wages by 0.25-0.5 percent.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/11/opinion/trump-robots-elec...

> No single factor such as tech-driven worker anxiety determines local political behavior. But there’s no mistaking that districts that voted Republican in the 2018 election are subject to higher levels of automation exposure.

aiyodev··on Ask HN: Getting traffic to your MVP – how did you do it?
Wouldn’t you know what the product and target market were? It’s your product.
aiyodev··on ‘Cybersovereignty’ Splits the Once World Wide Web
A country shouldn’t be able to profit from the web while blocking other countries from exchanging ideas and wealth with its citizens. We should disconnect China.

aiyodev··on A New Way of Voting That Makes Zealotry Expensive
In a real election, couldn’t you just run multiple candidates with identical positions and then have all but one drop out during the runoff?
aiyodev··on Tesla sued in wrongful death lawsuit that alleges Autopilot caused crash
I think the bigger issue is that Tesla would rather lie than accept responsibility and work to improve the problem. I would never trust a company like this with my life.
aiyodev··on SpaceX Gets FCC Approval to Sell Wireless High-Speed Home Internet from Space
I guess it's time to move onto the next shiny thing to keep the fan-investors entertained. I wonder how long they can keep this up.
aiyodev··on Mail a Letter Online
I love Traveling Mailbox. Been using it since I moved to Seattle. One overlooked feature is that you can have mail sent to multiple email addresses. So I don’t have to worry about a family member opening an important letter and losing it or forgetting to tell me about it.
aiyodev··on The value of friendships in academic success
In almost every college course I was in, there was a clique of students that shared homework answers and copies of tests from previous semesters. I had access to these if i was lucky enough to know someone in the clique.

College is a lot easier for those who cheat. I remember courses where the class average was in the 40s before it’s curved. A slight advantage could be the difference between an A and a C.

aiyodev··on Study finds Reddit’s ban of its most toxic subreddits worked (2017)
Reddit got the racists and sexists to leave by dialing the bigotry up to 11.

Reddit has never been as hateful as it is today. Take a look at /r/politics sometime. Do you see love?

People jump down your throat if you dare disagree with the hive mind. Those expressing the most popular opinions get to bully the minority. Fighting back will get you banned for incivility.

The censorship has also had a chilling effect on creativity. People create garbage content afraid to publish anything controversial. It’s becoming as boring to read as Facebook.

aiyodev··on AI-powered laundry-folding robot company has filed for bankruptcy
There’s no need to make such a sexist statement. I have cleaned my own clothes since I was a child. My wife had never done the laundry until she moved in with me.
aiyodev··on Elon Musk Claims on Tesla Chips Don't Match the Reality
Where is that committee of independent directors that the SEC required to control Elon Musk's communications? Is Tesla just ignoring the settlement?
