airpoint··on Ofcom fines 4chan £20K and counting for violating UK's Online Safety Act
Mostly incorrect. The First Amendment limits the US government, not Ofcom or UK courts. UK law can regulate services with “links to the UK” even if the provider is abroad, and Ofcom’s enforcement does not itself abridge anyone’s US constitutional rights.
airpoint··on A coherent European/non-US cloud strategy
The EU has some of the strongest data protection laws in the world, most notably the GDPR which enforces strict rules on how personal data is collected, stored, and used, with significant penalties for violatiions. Independent watchdogs in each country enforce these rules.

Freedom of expression is protected under Article 11 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights. While the EU allows limited restrictions (like hate speech, incitement to violence, etc), so do most democratic jurisdictions, including the US and UK.

airpoint··on Why Gov.uk's Exit this Page component doesn't use the Escape key
> BBC Weather’s homepage is a content-rich page. Users have a reason to be looking at it and to be looking for an extended period of time.

Most of that rich content is obstructed by them bloody cookie warnings, on first visit. That’s not a very convincing simulation of “I’ve been looking at this page for the last 5 mins!”

airpoint··on Zulip 9.0: Organized chat for distributed teams
They keep announcing "design improvements" but whenever I check all I see is an ugly, dated UI I just can't consider serious. Can't be.
airpoint··on Revolut's Irish mortgages are a game changer, and the banks know it
This is just an ad basically. Right?
airpoint··on Self-hosting keeps your private data out of AI models
Upgrading the UI from year 2000 and improving the UX would incite me to consider Zulip as a potential alternative.

Bashing a competitor in a blog post does not.

airpoint··on Austria is sleepwalking toward a far-right victory
Sounds like you’ve no actual clue of the history of FPÖ.
airpoint··on Apple hit with over 1.8B euro EU antitrust fine in Spotify case
Your post reads to me as if you thought all users shared the same exact needs as you do

That’d be quite an ignorant POV to take on IMO

airpoint··on GitHub Actions Are a Problem
Because it’s incomplete and unstable
airpoint··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
OK, but am I the only one finding Kagi "super" slow comparing to other search engines? It takes like a good full second to load the results…
airpoint··on How to Setup a Plex Media Server on Raspberry Pi
It really doesn't.

In my experience Swiftfin on ATV is at least ten years behind Plex in terms of functionality, reliability, codec support, UI polish and overall UX.

airpoint··on Slack’s biggest redesign ever tries to tame the chaos of your workday
Sorry, I'm being serious, what's the "polished" part referring to?

I've checked Zulip out a few weeks back and it's just the same outdated, quirky look and feel.

airpoint··on My frugal indie dev startup stack (2022)
Thanks for sharing. What does the following refer to in the GitHub Actions explainer:

> …it's free thanks to a generous friends and family plan

airpoint··on UK Treasury trying to find a Head of Cyber Security for £55k
You are right on this one. TIL how big Croydon actually is! Thanks!
airpoint··on UK Treasury trying to find a Head of Cyber Security for £55k
Same stats, different angle. It can be explained both ways.
airpoint··on UK Treasury trying to find a Head of Cyber Security for £55k
Incredible salary in the UK != incredible salary in London

> they'll just prescribe after the call and send the prescription to my local pharmacy.

Yes, exactly this is all they do now basically, nothing else.

Not sure which app you're using but I've been with Babylon Health for years and it went downhill very much lately.

Before the pandemic I was able to get a call consult within 3-4hrs and book an in-person appt for next day easily.

These days can't get a callback earlier than 2-3 days and bookings for in-person unavailable for WEEKS!

airpoint··on UK Treasury trying to find a Head of Cyber Security for £55k
Most of Croydons reputation is down to crime rate mate. Overall third highest in London and especially significant and growing in the violence against the person category.
airpoint··on The RIAA vs. Steve Jobs
OK, I can see now how you might think the pricing of Mac applications for professionals is crazy.

I asked for a Photoshop alternative for a commercial setting and you basically linked me to a Gimp.

It's like when people ask for an alternative to a managed MS Office 365 service and somebody replies with "just use LibreOffice" lol.

No mate, no. No way!

airpoint··on The RIAA vs. Steve Jobs
Which free apps accomplish the same and more than the mentioned $30 app?

I annotate screen grabs daily as part of my job and never found anything that comes close to CleanShot X. Would love to hear what's new and worthy on the market!

airpoint··on Apple, Foxconn convince Indian state to loosen labor laws
Very much so. I've learnt over the years that HN folk often regard 60 hour weeks as 'normal' and will defend to the death someone's right to voluntarily crunch even more over a long period of time as long as they get paid.

That's at least my perception of the crowd here, and it puzzles me.

airpoint··on GitHub staff are required to use Teams by Sep 1, 2023
Curious now, which one would you say is the most troublesome in your experience out of those three then? And why…
airpoint··on Behind TikTok's boom: A legion of traumatized, $10-a-day content moderators
The content is highly customised and targeted to one's liking. I've never seen any of the types you mention, besides an occasional pro-China fake news propaganda haha.

This is not to say TT doesn't contain such content, but it should be considered the feed you're seeing might be *significantly* different to someone else's feed…

airpoint··on Plano man keeping Blockbuster alive
“All the movies an average person would know” — they’re all still available “to rent” from every major provider. No need to Google anything?

I think you’re confusing stream-all-you-want for a monthly fee vs pay-per-view providers.

airpoint··on Kanopy – Stream films with your public library or university card
Yes, exactly this. Purchasing a DVD is priced differently for a) home use only, b) public screening, c) lending/circulating to public

I don’t think a library would sign up to Kanopy if it wasn’t somehow more attractive to them over DVDs.

airpoint··on How to Get a Job as a Software Developer in the UK After Brexit (Guide)
I’m laughing at the replies to your comments lol.

Didn’t you know that while all your statements might be subjectively correct, it’s only the Brits themselves allowed to moan about how much their country sucks, haha.

airpoint··on Texas law allowing users to sue social networks for censorship is now in effect
Many US websites do this already with the EU+UK — can’t be bothered with the European privacy laws, so simply deny access.

airpoint··on UK Network Operators Target iCloud Private Relay in Complaint to Regulator
I’ve been thinking of switching to a different operator for a while and this is the last drop.

But so now, what’s left on offer if I exclude those associated within the Mobile UK group?

airpoint··on Apple's kicking us off the App Store unless we give them 30% of all transactions
The only other submission linking to that Twitter profile is about the very same thing but 7 months ago. https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=twitter.com/jasmineri...

Did they release a new version or something that they need the eyeballs? One can’t help but wonder…

airpoint··on Apple's kicking us off the App Store unless we give them 30% of all transactions
Just how exactly are you or anyone else prevented to run your business in mobile browser.
