aimatt··on Journalist goes undercover making the iPhone 5 at Foxconn
I think he is trying to say that what this journalist is getting paid could be better or worse than other factories, but there's no way to tell reading this article. The author expects the reader to compare it to dollars as stated with the $4 wage. How many Yuan is that, and how many Yuan is a good living over there? I have a friend living in Shenzhen and he gets by on like $0.25 a day, living like a westerner.

And of course you are going to get reprimanded if you don't do your job correctly, e.g. too much oil or inaccurate placement. And of course a new employee won't be good at it at first.

Personally, the most atrocious thing I've read in the whole article is that dirty sheets is commonplace. And frankly, that is common in China.

Fair enough.

Please, oh please, list the price in the list pages.

aimatt··on Don't Blame Sitting — Yet — for Shorter Lives of the Sedentary
I made my own standing desk and I've been using it for a year now. I won't go back because just by doing that, I have more energy through the day. Who cares what the flip-flopping WSJ keeps saying.
aimatt··on Dropbox blocks API access for Boxopus over piracy concerns
I don't think it's silly at all. How many app are at Facebook's mercy that cost well over $30k? All of Zynga. I do see there is some risk, but there are certainly plenty of valid, legal reasons to use Bittorrent. I'm sorry, but I certainly think that this really is going the opposite direction of Dropbox's goal of becoming "the internet's file system". This just seems like the natural progression. Maybe they can port it to Google Drive.

I just don't see why products can be held accountable for their users' activity. Should we sue Dell because some guy had kiddy porn on his computer?

aimatt··on Dropbox blocks API access for Boxopus over piracy concerns
Oh man, Dropbox is really losing it's luster for me. First trying to get rid of the Public folder and now blocking third party apps. It's really too bad all of the hard work put into Boxopus has to go to waste. They won't even have profit to offset their beta testing bandwidth usage. I was really looking forward to having this product at my disposal.
aimatt··on Dropbox' Public/ folders will be phased out soon
If you host an html file with a relative img tag in the public folder it will just work. If you do it with the get link method, you'd have to get a link for each resource. Public folder is really helpful for hosting sites that are in development that you want to share with your clients.
aimatt··on Dropbox' Public/ folders will be phased out soon
I use it in the same way too.

I really hope they don't remove this. This is the only reason I pay them instead of Google Drive.
aimatt··on Python vs. Processing as a First Language
From the processing wiki http://wiki.processing.org/w/Python_Comparison:

Python:

a = [5, 10, 11]

if c >= 1 and c < 20:

    # Statements

Processing:

int[] a = {5, 10, 11};

if ((c >= 1) && (c < 20)) {

    // Statements
}

Python seems much more English-like and doesn't require the beginner to figure out and memorize what && means or that you have to memorize all the types or at least the ones you want to use for an array and where the brackets go when using an array. I program C and Wiring and early on I remember that I always had a hard time figuring out where the brackets go and whether I needed an array of doubles or float or integers, depending on what I need to do. Also they should warn you, you need to know how many elements are in the list beforehand and you can't resize them later.

The author of the article reminds me of a guy I worked with who still programmed in FORTRAN and said the use of whitespace to denote blocks seemed "icky" and hates it. Just keep an open mind and you'll do a lot better than him in the industry. He is out of work these days...

aimatt··on Arduino Burglar Alarm Sends SMS
That's right on the money, but technically I'm using a nano. Any Arduino will work though. There are knockoff Arduinos out there too, but I like to give back to the Arduino organization by buying an official board.
aimatt··on Arduino Burglar Alarm Sends SMS
You can get the cheapest Arduino you can find. About $50 total probably.

I would love to see this on a Raspberry Pi, but you will likely have to do some 3v3 to 5v translation or use the upcoming Gertboard.

You're right there about the jammer. But in testing, it hasn't taken more than 20 seconds so far.

You can hack this module: http://finch.am/projects/arduinogsm/ $25

OR you can buy this arduino shield: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9607 $100

But a lot more expensive
