aidog··on RubyWM – an X11 window manager in pure Ruby
Great to hear!

I wonder if your ruby compiler project would benefit from the now official pure ruby parser? [1]

aidog··on A site that tracks the price of a Big Mac in every US McDonald's
Japan has an eating out culture due to smaller living spaces. It sadly became a lot more expensive recently with salaries staying low. McDonalds went up dramatically over 5 years. The quality also went down.
aidog··on Let's make the indie web easier
We could bundle Jekyll in an .exe file using ocran and maybe even add a GUI... I'm willing to make that, but would people use it?
aidog··on JAL A359 at Tokyo collided with Coast Guard DH8C on runway and burst into flames
5 people dead aboard the coast guard plane that was responding to yesterdays earthquake. The airbus is still on fire

aidog··on I Love Ruby
I really love ruby too. I hope I can find a job writing a lot of ruby every day.
aidog··on Best Practices for Time Travelers (2003)
John Titor inspired Steins;Gate my favorite Anime about Time Travel. It's a masterpiece.
aidog··on Hacking ADHD: Strategies for the modern developer
Coping mechanisms also help with getting started. Mine are history podcasts and stimulating YouTube videos in the background.
aidog··on Show HN: Nango – Open unified API for product integrations
I can see this saving a lot of time! Great work!
aidog··on New job has no way of coding locally?
Many PHP hosters allow git syncing for a few years. One issue are co-workers/clients who change things directly via FTP. Having a local copy with docker (maybe vscode containers) works very well for testing. I assume OP has a lot of clients who do not have the budget for test environments which happens a lot. The SFTP workflow does work quite well, there are plugins for sublime text / vscode.
aidog··on Ask HN: Recommendations for Visiting the Japanese Countryside
I might be biased, but would recommend a pitstop in our sunny Miyazaki Prefecture.

See Miyazakian.com for details

aidog··on 47 Anime for 47 Prefectures in Japan
The 2022 Anime Blockbuster Movie Suzume by Makoto Shinkai starts out in Miyazaki Prefecture.(https://miyazakian.com/locations/nichinan/suzume.html) We're often forgotten as a destination, even though Miyazaki is a hidden gem as a Surfers and nature paradise. I'm trying to change that through my Miyazakian website.
aidog··on Pillows to help workers snooze at desk
I googled in Japanese for more information and photos because some people here seemed to be very interested:

Theres a lot of cool stuff in the japanese crowdfunding world. Gladly hit me up if you need anything.

aidog··on Freelancers aren’t happy with Japan’s new invoice system
I'm not a fan of taxing consumption. It's hard to believe that Japan did not have this for a very long time and now we are at 10%. It's especially questionable since older people consume less, but usually have more savings.
aidog··on Freelancers aren’t happy with Japan’s new invoice system
Yes, legal as long as we're below a certain revenue (10million yen, I believe). It's the filing of those records that the freelancers do not want to do.
aidog··on Freelancers aren’t happy with Japan’s new invoice system
The work is definitely undervalued. It seems that thanks to the current structure the barrier of entry is smaller and more projects are possible.
aidog··on Freelancers aren’t happy with Japan’s new invoice system
My animator friend is very upset about this because she will lose 10% of her income. I'm not sure if the anger is directed into the right direction, but I agree that it is not really a good change. I'm not looking forward to the effort and to publish my adress either. Inflation this year is absolutely brutal with some groceries almost twice as expensive.

As a freelancer I can invoice a client with consumption tax on the invoice, but not pay the consumption tax, yet the client can get the consumption tax he paid to me back. I wouldn't be suprised if criminals managed to get money from the government through fake invoices.

aidog··on I paid for Sublime Text
I used that plugin extensively to develop PHP websites 10 years ago. Great feedback loop
aidog··on micro – A Modern Alternative to nano
I love micro, I just wish it had a file selector like nerdtree and a shell.
aidog··on Show HN: Miteiru, a Japanese Immersion ElectronJS Video Player
Took me a minute to get it to work.

> Download public.zip from https://github.com/hockyy/miteiru/releases/download/v2.0.0/p... and put it to archived/public.zip

I don't see anything related to Whisper, so I tried it on a youtube video without added subtitles. UX can be improved, but otherwise it's exactly what I wanted.

aidog··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
I write on https://idogawa.dev

Ruby, Raspberry Pi, AI, Japan, Switzerland

aidog··on Termux is an Android terminal emulator and Linux environment app
I update my website by writing it in the Squircle CE editor and then run my static sitegenerator, commit and push to the server by pressing a termux homescreen shortcut. Works great. Images are a bit of an issue, but I have another termux script that's run when use the android "open with" menu and select termux on an image.

If anyone has a better idea how I can get images into the filesystem from an editor in android, let me know.

PS: Some light ChatGPT copy paste coding also works great. My foldable keyboard mouse setup means I could code everywhere.

aidog··on Rural Americans are importing tiny Japanese pickup trucks
I moved my belongings in a kei trucks to my new place and I just bought a new kei car. I love them, easier to drive than big cars as well. Fun fact, they are more expensive used in Japan than regular cars since they are more desirable for tax reasons and cheaper on the highway.
aidog··on DPReview is being shut down by Amazon today
Just accessed it 5 minutes ago and now it is gone with a 429 error
aidog··on PayPal has restricted our account after we invoiced a key containing “ALEP”
Too bad if you don't know what your surname means.
aidog··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
I completely switched to Linux the first time since 2006 because Windows is just way to slow or distracting now. Windows 10 worked okay for a while, but I don't want the random crashes, tabloid news and slow file navigation of Windows 11. Fedora Workstation GUI sometimes crashes, but productivity wise it is so much better and everything works. Software wise I only miss the google drive client, which is still not here after almost 11 years[0]. There is rclone, but I sometimes get logged out.

aidog··on Domain registrar Gandi gets bought out, removes free mailboxes
It is not free, it is included with the purchase. I think that is quite a difference.
aidog··on Domain registrar Gandi gets bought out, removes free mailboxes
I have not yet either. Customer for 10+ years. If they go through with this, I will have to consider small claims court in Taiwan or Japan.
aidog··on Domain registrar Gandi gets bought out, removes free mailboxes
I've bought a strangers domain name with a deal to keep hosting their two e-mail addresses. Just set up everything last year and can't easily move off. It now seems that this deal is going to cost me a lot more. I prepaid until 2029. Their tagline "No Bullshit" seems to no longer apply. I was a good client for over 10 years. Shame, that they don't have a japanese office, but maybe I can do small claims court in taiwan.
aidog··on Emacs is on F-Droid
I use my foldable bluetooth keyboard. Using iAWriter and termux, I can write posts for my PHP and ruby based blogs, run my static site generator and publish via git. Termux lets you make a shortcut that runs commands.

I tried to make gtk3 GUI apps with ruby on termux, apparently termux now supports this new mode that works in the browser, but some libs seem to be missing! I think that would be a cool platform.

aidog··on ChatGPT makes up fake academic papers
I was quite wowed when it recreated python-vlc in ruby.
