ahbyb··on New Hampshire Lawmaker Kills Repair Bill Because 'Cellphones Are Throwaways'
>The new iPhone 11 costs between $699 and $1,349. And it can be hard to find one at the moment. Google’s Pixel 4 costs between $799 and $999.

Vice is seemingly not biased at all. (They push the point that mobiles are not throwaways by choosing the most expensive mobiles as if they were the standard. Most people I know just buy the cheapest Android they can find; those are definitely throwaways)

ahbyb··on Perfectly Cropped
Thank God that setting does not persist through reboots!

Seriously though, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and the control center will appear, a button to turn the flashlight on or off should be there.

He probably meant that it costed him $3k when he bought it.
ahbyb··on Ask HN: Why don't homeless people from SF move to another city?
There are many many people who don't know what a healthy meal is, hence the obesity epidemic. But in this day and age you can find all sorts of crap in the supermarket that you can just heat up. I don't know, it's just weird. Well, thanks for sharing your perspective.
ahbyb··on Ask HN: Why don't homeless people from SF move to another city?
>The birth parents don't know how to cook, pay bills, take care of babies, etc.

How is this possible? Especially in the era of Google. Are we talking about people who are completely uneducated or simply mentally challenged?

ahbyb··on Where is Notepad in Windows 10? (2015)
Notepad supports \n for a few months or years now.
ahbyb··on Where is Notepad in Windows 10? (2015)
There's a huge searchbox in the taskbar by default that says "type here to search". You can click there and type "notepad" as well.
ahbyb··on Firefox Preview/GeckoView Add-Ons Support
The Mozilla Corporation is the only entity that can save us from Google; I can't blame people for getting salty whenever they screw up (which seems to be pretty often).

Given that the leadership of the Mozilla Corporation is completely useless, users have the responsibility to raise these issues so we can push them to fix them.

ahbyb··on Facebook may be gathering residential WiFi networks
Yes, it's allowed, but it requires location permissions which the user has to enable explicitly.

ahbyb··on Facebook may be gathering residential WiFi networks
That's something the system does internally. We are talking about exposing that list of networks to 3rd party apps.
ahbyb··on Update on free software and telemetry
>The feedback is very negative.

I don't know what did you expect?

ahbyb··on Update on free software and telemetry
That doesn't mean you have to edit what it said...
ahbyb··on Drivers are killing pedestrians at highest rate in almost 30 years
You'd be surprised (or perhaps not) at the amount of drivers who use their mobiles too while they drive.
ahbyb··on My transition to an Ubuntu workstation
Aha? What does Windows care if I have partitions at the end of the drive that it can't even read?
ahbyb··on A U.S. Citizen Was Detained While Trying to Pay for a Gift for His Daughter
It does not even include the name of the citizen. How do we know this is not just fiction?
ahbyb··on Google clamps down on free storage
Yes you can. You can go to the "All Mail" folder, add the "Size" column to the list view (right click the columns) and then proceed to sort every email by size.

ahbyb··on We are leaving the Apple App Store and all its problems
>Maybe unusable for those that think macOS is GNU/Linux with a pretty UI.

This was the target of the WSL that Microsoft added to Windows. They won me. GNU/Linux with good UI, good software support and that doesn't break every month. It's like we're living in the future.

ahbyb··on My transition to an Ubuntu workstation
Oh, definitely. Linux is worse, that's why I use Windows. Doesn't mean Windows is flawless, evidently.
ahbyb··on We are leaving the Apple App Store and all its problems
I had an N70. It was slow, slow, slow. I had a 5800. It was as slow as the N70 and the resistive screen made me want to cry. I never had the original iPhone but I guess it wasn't as bad.
ahbyb··on Why iOS 13 and Catalina Are So Buggy
iOS is already at 13.1.3
ahbyb··on My transition to an Ubuntu workstation
Windows gets a big update every few months. Those would always fail for me because I had a custom partition layout (Hackintosh) and I would have to reinstall every time.

Popups? Maybe he means the new notification system that was included with... 8? I hate notifications that cover part of my screen while I use my computer/mobile, so I have them disabled. I can understand that they are annoying for some, and they are not trivial to completely disable.

ahbyb··on Firefox 70
This is the kind of thing that should be built-in instead of Monitor, Pocket, etc. :(
ahbyb··on Latest Firefox Brings Privacy Protections Front and Center

Where was that database located? If I had a database in an offline computer with that username and password, it wouldn't be a problem. I'm not saying this is the case, but perhaps it had a whitelist of hosts that could connect to it, which were "properly" protected?
ahbyb··on Faces of Open Source
>I'm not sure where you're getting that from — it isn't mentioned on the about page[1].

Obviously. They want to pretend the diversity portrayed in that website is normal.

>I suspect you've made that assumption because they happen to be diverse, and the stereotype is that computing itself tends not to be. However, I think that is exaggerated, and projects such as this one aim to redress the balance.

Let's agree to disagree then.

ahbyb··on Faces of Open Source
The point of this website is diversity.

ahbyb··on The Decline of Stack Overflow
It's okay to ask a question if 1) you have a thick skin and 2) you expect a negative reaction. Otherwise, yes, you're going to be disappointed.
ahbyb··on Blizzard Postpones World of Warcraft 15th Anniversary Event in Taiwan
It's good that you say this because most people see my comment and just flag it. I'm simply saying the obvious, and probably the majority of people in the West feel the way I do.

I think it's appropriate to have a contrarian point of view posted here from time to time, instead of the echo chamber this website usually is.
