ahassan··on China Blocks WhatsApp
Kind of off-topic, but I wonder what the reasoning behind blocking some sites like Sony Japan was.
ahassan··on Facebook Profit Jumps 71% Year-over-Year
Is there an alternate article that isn't behind a paywall?
ahassan··on Interactive Map of Toronto Housing Changes 2011-2016
And here I was hoping that I'd be able to afford a place in Waterloo eventually (I've already given up hope for a home in the GTA).
ahassan··on Ask HN: What are the OSS alternatives to iOS/Android?
Why WhatsApp? Messages are E2E encrypted so it's fairly safe to use. Are you worried about metadata collection?
ahassan··on Dad who live-streamed his son’s birth on Facebook loses in court
So they're mad that the stream they shared publicly was seen by the public?...
ahassan··on XPS9350-macOS – macOS patches for Dell XPS 13 9350
Just bought a brand new 9360 and the coil whine is definitely not gone.
ahassan··on XPS9350-macOS – macOS patches for Dell XPS 13 9350
I just bought an XPS 13 9360 and returned it due to the coil whine. I've never had that issue on my Macs before so once I get refunded I'm going to buy a MBP instead.
ahassan··on Why I switched from OS X to Linux
I'm in a similar boat. I'm replacing my 2013 13" Pro with a new XPS 13. It just came yesterday so I can't really review it at this point, but I'm impressed so far.
ahassan··on BlackBerry confirms it will end in-house hardware development
Maybe, but it may not be a huge issue. I've had very good luck using apps split-screen in Android 7.0, which has a similar aspect ratio to classic BB devices.
ahassan··on P2P Car Rental Platform in Europe
For those in North America, Turo seems to be pretty good for Airbnb-style car rentals.
ahassan··on About the OS X Yosemite v10.10.1 Update
I'd expect that USB storage devices are supported. Why would you drop support for the most commonly used external storage?
ahassan··on About the OS X Yosemite v10.10.1 Update
So far I haven't encountered any issues with iOS 8 or Yosemite. I use my laptop as a developer daily and it's been perfect for me.
ahassan··on C:\ONGRTLNS.W95, OneDrive
Why not just use Dropbox? It's always been extremely reliable for me on my Mac.
ahassan··on Disable sharing of Spotlight searches with Apple
What exactly does this enable/disable?
ahassan··on Twitter's GIF hack
This is why 4chan supports WebM videos now in addition to the traditional gifs.
ahassan··on In Chrome 36, you can no longer disable the notification icon in the menu bar
Since Chrome forked WebKit, it's been going downhill. For the past little while, with each new version of Chrome, I notice more annoyances and bugs. I recently switched back to Safari as well, and while it's not perfect, it's better than Chrome IMO.
ahassan··on Show HN: Boxes
I'm kinda confused about how to win. Do I choose a number and if the computer also chooses that number, we both get X's?
ahassan··on iMessage purgatory
My friends and I have never ran into this issue switching from iOS to Android. The main thing to do is to disable iMessage on your old iPhone before you get rid of it; that should unregister it on Apple's servers. If you do that, then you should be unregistered unless you have another device hooked up (i.e. Mac).
ahassan··on Parallax effect from Google Lens Blur photos
It would be cool if this was added to the iOS parallax effect.
ahassan··on Apple Says iOS, OS X and “Key Web Services” Not Affected by Heartbleed
I stopped reading at that line.
ahassan··on Drop Dropbox
I think the point the author is trying to make is that you don't know what she will do to the quality of the product, but your best guess would be basing her future decisions on her past.

That said, I don't agree with the author. She may have made bad decisions in politics, but I don't see the relevance to a tech company.

ahassan··on Game servers: UDP vs TCP
The problem with using UDP is that many ISPs block UDP packets because it doesn't have features like congestion control. So using it for an internet game is out of the question, because there's a chance that a bunch of your users won't be able to play online.
ahassan··on New partition function record: p(10^20) computed
Does anyone know what he used to generate the equations in HTML? Most of the tools I've used simply convert LaTeX equations to an image.
ahassan··on German freemail sites trick Firefox and Chrome users into removing AdBlock
No, he's saying that Google is doing the first point, not this one.
ahassan··on Depixelizing Pixel Art
"Classic" apps will be scaled (using the normal bicubic filter) to twice their resolution on Mac. If they were implemented using Apple APIs, there's a good chance that text will be at a higher resolution and will appear clear.
ahassan··on Depixelizing Pixel Art
@DougBTX: Technically, there are 2 scaling levels. There's 1x for normal screens and 2x for retina. If you want one of the intermediate resolutions, it will actually render at 2x, then scale down.
ahassan··on Depixelizing Pixel Art
Well SuperEagle seems even slower for me, and I know for a fact that I can emulate with SuperEagle scaling on and it works fine (>30 FPS). So I don't think their algorithm is out of the question.
ahassan··on Show HN: ssh and cd get married
What shell and theme is he using?
ahassan··on Introducing Instagram Direct
So it's kinda like Snapchat, except your images can be viewed forever?
ahassan··on Ask HN: Is Java still worth learning?
I've seen many companies that still use Java. It's still a pretty popular technology, even though a lot of start ups don't typically use it anymore. However, I have noticed a bunch of start ups using Scala, which runs on the JVM. So learning Java and how the JVM works may be useful in the long run.
