agrippanux··on Pop_OS makes using Linux easy
Ha! I also use it on a 2017 XPS 13, its hands down the best linux experience of the 5-ish distros I tried on the device over the years.
agrippanux··on Quicker serverless Postgres connections
Deno Deploy doesn’t yet support npm (it’s coming), which I found out the hard way last week.

Overall tho I agree with your statement, and I now build most of my apps using serverless and databases like Neon.

agrippanux··on How to start a React Project in 2023
I just built a ChatGPT-powered Spanish tutor for my son using Fresh from Deno and it was overall an enjoyable experience. Once I grok’d how islands worked it was pretty smooth sailing.

I do love NextJS but I will try a few more Fresh projects soon.

agrippanux··on Rippling raises $500M in emergency funds after SVB fails
Having used both extensively, I'd pick Rippling over Gusto any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

This SVB debacle doesn't look good on them though.

agrippanux··on SF payroll firm Rippling has to delay payouts after Silicon Valley Bank collapse
This is a pretty big issue in the state of CA. Not paying on time results in a $100 fine per paycheck failure and subsequent infractions are $200 and 25% of what the employee is owed.

It's CA Labor Code 210 if anyone is interested in looking it up.

agrippanux··on I use cheap notebooks
I'm the opposite of the author, the nicer the notebook, the more likely I am to use it.

Currently I'm using a Mnemosyne 105 and my primary writing instrument is a Rotring 600 (0.7mm).

When this notebook is filled, I'll probably re-order several more.

agrippanux··on Developer marketing for early-stage startups – what we’ve learned
What I love is when competing services claim the same large companies use their product.
agrippanux··on Bun v0.5.7
Also frequently a good chunk of that 80-100 is watching YouTube or cruising Reddit and convincing yourself you were putting in real hours.
agrippanux··on Learn Vim (2021)
LunarVim is a good choice as well, just works out of the box
agrippanux··on CheatGPT
What ChatGPT (and its cousins) expose is that the way humans have been taught in most schools - memorizing and regurgitating information - is now a commodity.

What humans being to the table over ChatGPT is our ability to create new links between information, aka creativity. Teaching creativity, imo, will require a return to the methods like those of Sophocles and his contemporaries. I would rather this author be writing about how he is going to re-examine how he teaches rather than bemoaning that students can shortcut his current approach.

agrippanux··on Walmart to close three tech hubs, tells tech staff to return to offices
Carlsbad, CA is pretty laid back and not associated with city grime and crime.

Source: I live in Encinitas on the edge of the border with Carlsbad.

agrippanux··on SirTunnel, a personal ngrok alternative
I am guilty of promoting Cloudflare, but it's cause I genuinely like most of their products and find they save me/my company significant time - including Tunnels, which I use to host several services like a Stable Diffusion web interface for our art team.

That said, their support for NextJS in Pages is pretty frustrating, so if they do have shills that read this, please do something about that :)

agrippanux··on PagerDuty to Lay Off 7% of Staff; Revenue Officer to Exit
With my VP Eng hat on, PagerDuty is a useful service

With my VP Operations hat on, I can't justify the pricing

Wearing both hats at the same time, I built the solution my company needed inside a weekend and allocated funds elsewhere

agrippanux··on Bitwarden Acquires Passwordless.dev
Doesn’t necessarily mean change will come to the current offering; acquisitions can happen because new or enhancing existing product lines (like enterprise) are in the future.
agrippanux··on Get Running with Couch to 5K
My advice is get a semi-active dog.

My dog wakes me up at 6am to go out potty. I get up, run him a 5k, and it takes about 30 minutes total. A walk would be 20 minutes so it’s not that much longer.

Being semi-active means my dog will conk out after his run and be well regulated the whole day. If he doesn’t get his run, he will become mischievous in order to entertain himself.

The morning run solves for several needs - including my health - and not doing the run has a built in consequence of dealing with a bored and mischievous dog for the day.

agrippanux··on Twitter suspends pg's account [fixed]
Content moderation is a hard, stressful, thankless job. Having built several moderation tools for large sites (large for back in the day), I for one am enjoying the debacle that is Elon and a cadre of Yes Men thinking they would waltz in with no experience and shake it all up with no consequences.
agrippanux··on Paul Graham is leaving Twitter for now
I think we can be honest and admit many large tech companies are bloated and can lay off staff - with the proper planning and care. Taking an axe to an org you just took over is typically not associated with proper planning and care.
agrippanux··on Vim Foot Pedal
It wasn’t that easy on the ill fated Touch Bar, which prompted my move to Caps.
agrippanux··on Vim Foot Pedal
Switching ESC to Caps Lock took significantly less time to retrain muscle memory than I expected.
agrippanux··on My IDE is too heavy so I moved to Emacs
+1 to LunarVim, I use it daily. It has sensible default shortcuts and plugins. I think I have configured maybe 2 things in the last few years.
agrippanux··on The best leaders are great individual contributors, not professional managers
In defense of your 2.b manager, many organizations are improperly set up where the only way to advance is to move into management.
agrippanux··on $7M lost on Amazon inventory, then bankrupt
The bulk of my Amazon shopping now is done by setting CamelCamelCamel alerts for legit products and when one hits, triple checking I am buying from the actual company.
agrippanux··on The Twitter Files
Also that the tweets the Biden team asked to be reviewed violated Twitter TOS for revenge porn.
agrippanux··on Just a bunch of idiots having fun: a photo history of the LAN party
Sophomore year in college (‘97) was the height of LAN parties for me. Our dorm building wasn’t wired for internet yet so about 12 of us got together and took it upon ourselves to create our own network. We cajoled the NetOps dept at UCSD to give us old repeaters and bought a ton of BNC wire to connect everyone. Of course the facilities dept didn’t like rogue wiring running all over the massive dorm complex so they would cut down the wires, which started a months long escalating battle of more cleverly concealing them. Eventually we found the paint company the school used, ordered the same color/finish, masterfully camouflaged any exposed wires, and the network never went down again.

So many nights of Diablo, Quake, Red Alert, Doom and the genuine excitement across the network when connecting a new dorm apartment are memories seared into my brain.

agrippanux··on iPad Pro M2
If you are needing it for web dev, the Inspect browser on iOS works great for that purpose. It is annoying you have to pay $10 for something that should be built in.
agrippanux··on iPad Pro M2
Not to mention video calls (Google Meet, Zoom, Teams) kill the battery on an iPad. Google Meet in particular seems to be about 1% of battery a minute.
agrippanux··on I surveyed 500 startup founders about their salaries
One thing that can fly under the radar is when a founder uses their personal credit card for things like social media ad spend, and then gets reimbursed by the company. It's a very easy way to rack up tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars on a credit card which equals tons of points for things like travel, electronics purchases, gift cards, etc.
agrippanux··on Streaming data in Postgres to 1M clients with GraphQL
My company is using this in production to stream messages/online presence to our Unity game clients and it works very well.
agrippanux··on Moving from React to htmx
I don’t understand why this effort was undertaken vs migrating to NextJS and accomplishing the same thing in half the time without needing to ramp up more Python.
agrippanux··on I wish my web server were in the corner of my room
A few weeks ago I set up a Stable Diffusion webui on my home linux box and used a Cloudflare tunnel to host it on a url and gate access to just my company's email domain. I started a slack channel for AI Art and we started holding a daily contest, it's been really fun.

Shout out to Cloudflare, setting up an access protected tunnel took like 10 minutes.
