agentgumshoe··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
Now, define 'social media' clearly and we're all good.
agentgumshoe··on Sell for half a billion and get nothing (2021)
ROI depends on whether the company is profitable going forward too I'd imagine...
agentgumshoe··on Sell for half a billion and get nothing (2021)
Which... Is the same maxim still
agentgumshoe··on So long, and thanks for all the bytes
Much like societies, there is no 'one way' to do it all.

Best is to really understand what you are trying to do in the first place.

agentgumshoe··on So long, and thanks for all the bytes
The other key factor is probably the person hiring/hiring being able to identify a 'good' programmer. Whether that's through their own competence or having some knowledge of the candidate outside their resume.

Speed to market is also a factor. If you pushing to release a new product, good engineers are very important. For big corporates with established marketshare and profits, it seems to be the thousand monkeys with typewriters approach

agentgumshoe··on Wind River Linux
Nah, obviously she just likes wearing glasses that sit at a funny angle...
agentgumshoe··on Tether reveals partnerships with Secret Service, FBI in letter to U.S. Senate
Err.. except the environment they exist in - 'crypto' - tends to be full of anti-gov/3letteragency types, so you'd think this is a bad PR angle to take.

At a guess, I would say this is more flagging to their real customers that their funds aren't safu...

agentgumshoe··on Tether reveals partnerships with Secret Service, FBI in letter to U.S. Senate
It's not an audit. Attestations mean they move a bunch of funds into the account, get the auditor to check that indeed that money was there at that point of time, then move it away again. Every legitimate auditor they've engaged has quit.

Also, the 'auditors' they are approaching are more and more into the 'not quite competent' end of the line if you look into them.

agentgumshoe··on Tether reveals partnerships with Secret Service, FBI in letter to U.S. Senate
So... Half the appeal of crypto and Tether & co has been a separation from the current financial system and 'deep state,' yet here we are embracing both with hugs.

The cryptoverse is no place for making sense.

agentgumshoe··on Tether reveals partnerships with Secret Service, FBI in letter to U.S. Senate
Tether has not completed a single audit yet
agentgumshoe··on Tether reveals partnerships with Secret Service, FBI in letter to U.S. Senate
Still not a partnership. Tether spin.
agentgumshoe··on I'm skeptical of low-code
Which of course becomes the CTO saying of course the business can build skyscrapers with these simple kit sets.
agentgumshoe··on NY Times copyright suit wants OpenAI to delete all GPT instances
Clearly fair use? What if I pay ChatGPT to give me the NYT article it sourced verbatim as stored (i.e. without referring me to the NYT source)?
agentgumshoe··on NY Times copyright suit wants OpenAI to delete all GPT instances
What if I ask ChatGPT to print the article verbatim as sourced, from its own dataset?
agentgumshoe··on The 1988 shooting down of Flight 655 as a user interface disaster
Not all LGBTQ people mind you, just the latest more minority group within (or appended to).

It gets to the point of absurdity when we expect to add more complexity with new workarounds to make things simple again.

agentgumshoe··on Choose the browser that best suits your privacy needs
What percentage of users actually, really care how marginally more efficient their web browser is these days?
agentgumshoe··on Reauthorizing mass surveillance shouldn't be tied to funding the government
Well that's what Ukraine are doing in voting for Zelenskyy's views... I think we often overestimate the qualifications behind our politicians, they're not much different to the celebrity love-ins or corporate nepotisms running rampant as-is (the obvious ones being Trump and Biden).
agentgumshoe··on Reauthorizing mass surveillance shouldn't be tied to funding the government
So just like politicians (cough, Lindsay Graham, cough)...
agentgumshoe··on Reauthorizing mass surveillance shouldn't be tied to funding the government
She doesn't even have to opine, she could just state how important the policy decision could be and make sure people are aware of it.
agentgumshoe··on Reauthorizing mass surveillance shouldn't be tied to funding the government
That's exactly why I mentioned Kanye. All the influence with none of the outcomes.

Perhaps Swift should postpone a concert until one such disagreeable law is changed...

agentgumshoe··on Reauthorizing mass surveillance shouldn't be tied to funding the government
These are the kinds of things that annoy me in relation to celebrities. For instance, Taylor Swift/Kanye could raise this issue and probably single-handedly cause enough upset to have this changed/removed.

I wish they worked positive (and sure, sometimes they'll probably get it wrong) policy change rather than quiet charities and token signalling.

In terms of the government using it for ransom, well, the other side should absolutely say they'll shutdown government if these privacy overreaches are not removed. Put the pressure back on and vocalise the absurdity of the situation. But hey, it's not a wild guess to say both sides are really in support of the measure and use the 'ransom' as an excuse to pass it.

agentgumshoe··on Scandinavian spy drama: An intelligence chief who came under state surveillance
Except the comment higher up says the prosecution dropped the case due to disagreeing with the court's decision that information wasn't deemed secret enough.

The whole "we can't do that because secret stuff would be revealed and people put in danger" excuse seems to be used all too often of late, especially when that secret stuff appears to be illegal.

agentgumshoe··on FTC Chair Lina Khan looks for allies and leads in Silicon Valley charm offensive
There's an old-fashioned solution where they just need to make their own money and have good growth strategy. Or get a loan with properly worked out figures.

I'm kinda hoping we're getting to the lessons learned point of easy debt burn it till you make it startup culture.

agentgumshoe··on Shadows Edge Software
It certainly does at least read as "elite delivery team" lingo bingo.
agentgumshoe··on SCOTUS to decide if public officials can block critics online
They can't just block speech using bots as the excuse. It's up to the government officials to provide a channel that allows free speech as the law defines.

I imagine this will more likely raise issue with the use of private social platforms for public statements rather than whether they can block comments.

agentgumshoe··on Microsoft completes $69B deal to buy Activision Blizzard
I still don't get how $69B is a reasonable deal. Acti-Blizzard have been making 7-8B net the last few years, so it will take MS 10 years assuming constant returns just to break even. Why is it a good deal, especially in gaming. What does MS want with the customer base?
agentgumshoe··on Clearview AI: secretive company that might end privacy as we know it (2020)
"Won't someone think of the employees" is a common tactic companies use to avoid shutdowns, and that's against long standing laws and regulations. Seems to work often enough too.
agentgumshoe··on How Transformers Work
Yeah, this was definitely not more than meets the eye.
agentgumshoe··on The presumption that computers are working correctly
Ah the Prenda Law saga, such memories
agentgumshoe··on Judge rules Google trial documents can be posted by U.S. online
Phew it's a real judge. The heading makes it sound like Google has some kind of self-appointed justice system in place!

The cyberpunk Corpo future can wait a bit longer then...
