agent86··on Microsoft 4-day week boosts productivity and sales
I think it is good for Microsoft and others to begin experimenting with changing the default work arrangement. This may give them a significant advantage moving forward.

By 2030 all "baby boomers" will be older than 65. These people will need to be cared for on a scale that we have never encountered before.

Companies will need to find a way to continue to conduct business while the workforce contends with caring for the aging population. Work-at-Home, Flex Schedule, and 4 Day Weeks and other things that are currently seen as perks can all become part of a core solution to that problem. Companies can essentially beta the potential solutions as a perk today.

I wouldn't be surprised to see elder care benefits start to appear in company benefit packages as well. Currently parental/birth benefits are a distinguishing factor in HR circles and gaining traction. I expect elder care benefits to take a similar course as caring for the aging population increases in burden.

agent86··on How Coca-Cola Undermines Plastic Recycling Efforts
I haven't done real calculations, but on the whole this is pretty low impact and doesn't require much extra effort or any special trips.

We rinse the bottles/cans whenever we are doing other dishes. We throw them into a bin that holds all deposit eligible containers. When the bin fills we take it with us on our next trip to the grocery store and recycle them.

It probably takes me about 5 minutes to feed them all in and it recovers about 3 dollars.

These days I get it in change and then give it to my daughter for her piggy bank. She's very young, but we're trying to introduce the concepts of saving early.

agent86··on How Coca-Cola Undermines Plastic Recycling Efforts
I'm looking for HN to provide me some perspective outside of my little bubble here.

I've only ever lived in states that have had bottle deposits. I've been feeding these cans/bottles back into the redemption machines since I was a kid. I can genuinely stay that I've recycled nearly every eligible container I've ever used.

However for most of my adult live I've also had recycling available at curbside - including cans/bottles. It was originally paper, glass and metal separated, but has since gone single stream.

We recycle everything we can that is eligible, but I don't put cans/bottles in there because I'd lose the deposit. I wish the deposit was gone so that I could put these items in there and gain this little efficiency in life.

At the same time I see these studies where the data clearly shows the deposit has a significantly higher effective recycling rate. I'm struggling to understand this. Do the places without deposits also not have curbside single stream recycling that processes these containers?

Can someone with experience in a location with no deposit but with curbside single stream recycling available for these items explain why people aren't recycling them there?

Is really as simple as "people won't put things into a different trash receptacle in their home"?

agent86··on Tesla to Buy Energy Storage Firm Maxwell Tech at $4.75 a Share
The trouble with that is to a certain extent we're just kicking the can down the road. Modern Tesla vehicles have more range than older ones, yet people still charge modern ones to 100% for various reasons.

The idea here is to leverage their incredibly fast rate of charge and short term nature to reduce time spent Supercharging. Very roughly speaking, you can charge from 0-90% in an hour, but to go from 90-100% can take almost another hour.

If you could get the car to 90% and then very rapidly charge the capacitors with the remaining 10% that trickles in, you get the car off the charger faster. In theory you could almost double the number of cars you could serve at that station.

agent86··on Tesla to Buy Energy Storage Firm Maxwell Tech at $4.75 a Share
The trouble spot with Superchargers is usually the end of the charge, not the beginning. The batteries can usually absorb energy rather quickly when at a low rate of charge. What is really painful is the last 10% where the charge rate drops line a stone.

What would be an interesting use of this idea would be to have 10% capacity onboard in capacitors. Once you get within 10% of the desired charge level in the batteries, you quickly charge the capacitors, which then trickles into the battery over time.

This might allow you to increase the overall charge rate for the car which would help reduce wait times at Superchargers.

You might want to look into Quick Base.[1] It is actually the little known elder statesman in this space and includes a lot of features Airtable doesn't currently support. Specific to this thread, one of them is Webhooks.[2] And while the product uses an autonumber for keys by default, you can change it and then import/update against your designated key.[3]

agent86··on Airtable gets $52M in funding
I would suggest taking look at Quick Base [1]. We've been using it for years and I've found it hits the sweet spot for us in the complex spreadsheet/light database space.

I've been following Airtable for a while and I have high hopes they continue their upward trajectory. I like where they are going, and they seem like the most likely alternative if we were to move, but Quick Base still seems to have a leg up in a lot of areas. Cross Application/Database Connections, Webhooks Support, and automated table sync from Dropbox/Box/SFTP just to name a few.

>I think a better option would be to do what Amazon is doing for HBO - offer a small portion of the studio (in this case Disney) included with the platform (Netflix) with the option to pay additional fees for the entire catalog.

Just a heads up - HBO is pulling their shows from Amazon in mid-2018[1]. They essentially view it as competition with HBO Now.

agent86··on Kit Kat Conspiracy (2002)
The story in the article is actually from 2002. The irony here is that the Kit Kat has gotten better than the rest of Hershey's lineup through attrition since that time.

In 2008 Hershey started taking the cocoa butter out of many of their chocolates[1], noticeably reducing their quality for many people.

Because of the terms of the licensing agreement with Nestle, Hershey was not able to do this with the Kit Kat, maintaining its quality.

agent86··on New Mexico's 'Atari Dump' to Be Excavated
It's been YEARS since I've seen that video last. God bless YouTube :-).

A guy named Adam Bailey, who did a pretty good look at the Atari Landfill site in the mid-2000s, approached the band about the video. While the video is cool, it is actually fake. It was filmed in Texas using games with E.T. labels printed for them.

This makes sense, as Atari dumped the games in 1983 but the landfill was in use until the 90's. Any digging should have a fair amount of debris. There is 7 years of trash to get through, not to mention the poured concrete.

agent86··on New Mexico's 'Atari Dump' to Be Excavated
Back around 2006 a man by the name of Adam Bailey did a pretty in-depth look into the Atari landfill. The site appears to be gone now, but the Wayback Machine looks like it has a full copy.

http://web.archive.org/web/20070307122420/http://atari.digit...

An excavation should be interesting. There are years of post-Atari dump trash and other material to get through.

In talking to the author back then he said that Atari poured cement on their material in the landfill in 1983, but the landfill was still in use until the until the 90's when the EPA marked the site for hazardous material and shut it down. The landfill was setup before rubber bladders were mandatory and it was leaking into the water table. The protocol for capping a landfill at the time was a thick layer of natural clay with methane vent pipes. After that, at least a foot of dirt is placed on top.

After capping it went on to be used for recreational purposes (ATVs, 4x4s, etc.).

agent86··on Yahoo CEO Mayer Now Requiring Employees to Not Be Remote
The one part I do not understand about all of this comes when you have a company with multiple locations and work that crosses locations.

Say you have east coast and west coast facilities. If people only worked within their local facility, I can see the reasoning and advantages. What I don't understand is where the value is when the work crosses facilities.

What you would need to do to bridge the gap between the workers in the different facilities is the same thing you should do to bridge the gap between remote workers.

How is having people that need to work together in separate facilities any better than the people working remotely?

agent86··on Exploring the Abandoned Macy's Midwest Headquarters
I've always found this stuff to be interesting on a variety of levels. What happens when maintenance stops? What state did they leave things? In the cases where you have before and after shots - or multiple visits spread out over a long time - it can be even more interesting to see how things turn out.

If anyone else wants to see more of this kind of thing, I've spent a lot of time looking at places on the Detroit Urbex site.

I'm sure there are some other good explorations out there, and I hope this thread turns up a couple other hidden gems that don't pop right up on a Google search.

Try this on the MBP:

* Connect to the 2.4Ghz network

* Hold "Option" and click the wifi icon in the top menu

* Note the "Transmit Rate"

* Repeat this for the 5Ghz network

When I first setup my Time Capsule I noticed that my Mac often times was attaching to the 2.4Ghz network. At that point I separated the networks and did the above.

Low and behold, each time the Mac picked the 2.4Ghz network it did so because it had a higher transmit rate than the 5Ghz one in a given location.

agent86··on The Humble Indie Bundle #4 (pay what you want and help charity)
One thing I think separates the Humble Bundle from the Indie Royal bundle is that Humble Bundle games always work on Windows, Mac, and Linux. I primarily use OS X and Linux these days, so that's a big incentive for me, and helps keep my "fatigue" down.

That said, if this turns into a never ending string, the amount I contribute towards each bundle would likely drop since frequency would be going up.

Probably something for the Humble folks to investigate - which performs better - more frequent small bundles or less frequent larger bundles.

agent86··on Tiny Words - my spare time (for 2 months) iOS game project
I used code ANNH76FF7NPP.

The game is pretty cool! It took me a few turns to get into a groove, but eventually I got into the "zone" and things picked up for me.

A few things I noticed and figured I would toss out there for you.

* There isn't any background music. Seems like there should be, but at the same time, I could understand why you might not want any. Players choice maybe?

* The sounds are kind of quiet, and it make a noise when I move but now when the piece drops. Maybe like a little "click" when a piece drops into place?

* I have a physical Scrabble branded game that is similar, but one cool thing it does that your app does not do is allow smaller words. So I can use up to the maximum number of tiles - and score more points - or I can use less tiles but still get something. That might be too much of a change in gameplay here though.

* Sometimes you just get stuck on some letters - you get locked in and just freeze up - maybe shake to jumble the letters in a different order?

* I don't participate on Facebook or Twitter, but maybe you'd get some mileage out of integration with those services for new personal high score posts or the such?

All in all, pretty good. I hope you had as good experience making it as I did playing it.

agent86··on Show HN: My IPhone App that makes $25 a day
Number 2 sounds like the two stage reminders I requested, which is awesome. I need to go back in and alter my notifications now.

I very much await anniversary support. Fantastic!

I think your idea of a note for each entry could be very useful, though I'd prefer it be pretty open/generic. Like when I tap on the contact, under the buttons I get a box I can enter text in. That way you can use it for any purpose - gift tracking, party details, etc.

With any text entry, please enable/support the landscape keyboard if it isn't too much hassle. It's not a "sky is falling" thing to not have, but I just prefer to enter text with that way and it screams attention to detail.

One thing I've noticed with more usage is the iAd that appears when you enter into the details of a contact. That's just a pet peeve of mine for a paid app. Obviously I did not pay, so I'm not going to complain :-).

In a non-pro, or Lite, version I would keep the iAd where you have it now and even add another one at the bottom of the home screen and settings screen. For an app like this it isn't terribly intrusive, and if it's a free version you should get something for your effort.

If the iAds end up performing better cost wise than the 99 cent ad-free Pro version, maybe bump the Pro version up to $1.99 to compensate. I'm sure folks with actual app store experience could offer better advice in this area though.

agent86··on Show HN: My IPhone App that makes $25 a day
I used code: AAN7X9LRTEP9

This is a great example of a sweet little app that fills a gap for me. Some comments based on my initial usage.

Three bug-ish type things:

* If you have an entry without both a first and last name - say "Dad" - it displays the missing portion as "(null)". So, in my case, it shows "(null) Dad". I'd personally prefer it just displayed whatever it had and skipped the null.

* Clarify the "None" value in the "Notify Days Before" option. Does "None" mean 'Don't notify me at all' or 'Notify me on the actual day'? I tend to like to know on the day of, so I can call or otherwise contact the person. Without tinkering, I can't tell if the app does that or what this option really means. If the app can't notify ON the day, I'd really like it to.

Two requested features:

* Anniversary Support - I absolutely love that it populates itself from my address book based on the Birthday category. It would be doubly awesome if it did the same with the Anniversary entry as well! Perhaps have them appear on the "Upcoming Birthdays" screen with red calendar days instead of blue ones, and make an option to disable them if the person desires.

* Two Stage Reminders - It would also be cool to have two of reminders to trigger. Basically remind me a X days before and then the actual day of. X days before so I can remember to get a gift or make a plan, and then the day of to remind me again because I'm stupid :-). Other people would only want to be reminded once, so it should certainly be an option that can be disabled.

Two things I love about the app:

* If I had Facebook, I'm sure that integration would be awesome and useful. Automation is very cool.

* I love how it tells me how old they will be. Saves me from having to figure that out every time a birthday comes up.

This is a really cool app. I hope you continue to work on it and it continues to be successful for you.

agent86··on Ask HN: 40 iPhone app promo codes for candid feedback
I used code: NJNNPYMMPHMA

- First thing I noticed was that upon launching the app it asked me to rate it. I haven't even done anything with it yet, so asking me to rate it seems out of place. You might want to wait a few launches before you request feedback. Also, it is really annoying that every time I run the app it keeps asking me rate it even though I said "No Thanks". I even agreed to rate it, and it continues to pester me.

- In the settings menu, I think I would like it if it played the transition sound when I changed it in the menu. It was annoying to have to close out that menu and tinker with the app to hear the sounds.

- I think I managed to flummox the app a bit. Not sure if it is as designed, or a bug, but it feels like a bug...

Here's what I did:

1) Start the app

2) Add one song to the playlist

3) Click Done

4) Click Play to start the list

5) Skip ahead to the next song

Counter says "0 down/0 to go", but the 60 second timer continues to count down. The play button doesn't do anything, the back button doesn't do anything, but the skip button will reset the 60 second timer and play a sound, despite there being no song present.

agent86··on Show HN: Yak, my weekends project - invite code "hackernews"
Here are some of my thoughts as I went through my initial sign-on/browse process:

- A bit jarring that entering in the invite code simply took me into the site as a user. I was a bit confused at first as to what just happened. I quickly figured it out, and admit it is quite cool how you do it, but I'm not sure my father or other un-techy people would ever be able to understand it. Maybe an overlay or something explaining what is going on would be good. Or perhaps this is a beta only thing.

- The site let me change my name even though I didn't pay for any credits. I suppose I'm in credit debt now. Not sure if that was supposed to happen, so I didn't proceed to try anything else that required credits (creating a channel).

- It seems like you allow people to host pictures and files directly on the site, which helps prevent link rot as articles age, but you do NOT seem to store videos. You can only link to them on two sites. Oversight perhaps?

- I'm a little unsure about the "flirt" option. I get how it jives with the geolocation and people near you thing, but for a site that states "All 100% anonymous and proudly Facebook unconnected." it feels out of place. It's also just feels a little weird to have that pop up in "What's Hot" on the world channel next to other stuff. Maybe I'm just an old fuddyduddy though.

- When viewing a channel, it seems like the three tab navigation model comes up a little short. Say you get a busy channel, how would you find something that isn't a "best of" or "hot", but is old enough to have fallen off the "live stream". It seems like all I could do would be to keep whacking "More". Perhaps a "Today" tab and/or a "Week's Best" tab or something?

- I click on "cowboy" and the sidebar said I could anonymously post something by emailing the address. I did that and after 5-10 minutes, nothing appeared. Not sure how that is supposed to work? That said, it seems kind of strange that anyone can post anything on my "wall". I feel like it might be possible to get into trouble - socially or otherwise - with that. In the least, lots of clean-up controls would be good to have in place.

- I feel like I can't highlight or locate things from people I want to follow. What I think I want is a tab that I can add people to and just track anything they post. This way I'm not checking a million channels, a million individual walls, or trying to get everyone to use a single private channel.

- I feel like you could get into a position where "good" channel names can get taken up and left for dead by their owners. Say someone makes one called "Apple", is the only moderator, and then just gives up. Now the best named channel for Apple news is a desolate wasteland. It just seems like there is potential for a bad user experience because the most likely place to look for information is a wasteland. Perhaps there should be something in place to reclaim names after periods of inactivity? Then again, I'm not sure how that jives with people paying for them either.

Anyway, this is getting long, so I'll stop here. But all in all I think it is really cool. And, as someone NOT on Facebook, its refreshing to see a new site that isn't completely tangled up in it.

agent86··on Google's dropping H.264 from Chrome a step backward for openness
Maybe I'm just a moron, but couldn't a lot of this problem be solved by making the decoder free to use in all circumstances? They already allow free Internet broadcast at no royalty, and have other free parts of their licensing now, so they're clearly open to the concept at least.

If I understand things correctly, for people shipping decoders the royalty amount is capped at $6.5 million a year. So they're making $6.5 million from Microsoft, Apple, Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, etc. All in all, probably a few hundred million over everyone?

Would it not be more advantageous to leave that money on the table, completely entrench your format EVERYWHERE, and then pick it up on the professional/encoder side of things?

CNN, CNET, Fox, whoever, probably wouldn't mind paying a little more and getting a single universal format for everything everywhere and home users/hobbyists can play for free since they'll never hit the thresholds. Startups can get going by working in the free zones (< 100k paid subs, free un-paid use).
