afsina··on Turkish academics: Remain silent or risk all
Erdoğan and public was convinced with the coup plan in 2009 ( who knows probably they were plotting for real and gülen supporters in the army exposed it) and Gülen probably have put some (many?) of his supporters among replacements. They are extremely secretive so I doubt anybody got suspicious. I read some of the captive coup army officials statements, they are quite shocking.
afsina··on Turkish academics: Remain silent or risk all
Firstly I do not think this is about secularism. Turkey is still a more or less a secular country happen to be ruled by a central right - somewhat religious party.

My personal view is that Gulen was involved with the coup, but possibly jocobin nationalist/kemalist fractions in the army was also in the mix.

afsina··on Turkish academics: Remain silent or risk all
Vast majority was against the coup. That is for sure.

Author of that article is like an apologist for excessive government spending. To me, if government did not spend that amount of money on space exploration, probably private sector would have achieved even better things faster with lower cost.

Besides, about the author : "..Wallace Fowler is the director of the Texas Space Grant Consortium.".

afsina··on After the coup, Turkey turns against America
Oh you are insulting peoples intelligence here. Playing with words like that does not make it less stupid.
afsina··on After the coup, Turkey turns against America
Nope. According to news, they learned it several hours ago (around 4 pm) but information was quite limited. They did try taking preventive measures but failed to stop the coup (You can read one coup army officials statements on that). However, probably because of it coup started earlier than planned and it was one of the reasons of the failure.

Too much drama?

- PKK is killing your soldiers what do you do? This has nothing to do with IS.

- Ok, he has a temper and does not have a good sense of humor but please, did you find "that" poem funny?

- Oh come on. You know it was not about being bad judges.

Though yes, reintroduction of death penalty is a very bad idea. Also things are being done too hastily. All allegations are need to be verified.

Turkey is actually quite friendly with Iraqi Kurdistan.
afsina··on After the coup, Turkey turns against America
Huh. It seemed hell of a (failed) coup to me. Just because outcome favored the government (Duh! This is a failed coup, what do you expect?) it does not mean they convinced soldiers to kill tens of people. Too much confirmation bias?
afsina··on After the coup, Turkey turns against America
No, people has families and children and for a million other reason they may choose not to go to streets. It is idiotic to think that they are supporting the coup.

Google become what it is because of protectionism? Protectionism slows down everything and gives pain to the consumers. You are better off without it.
afsina··on Google Street View banned in India due to security concerns
Competition is good. But banning the better player is not the way. That would be just feeding crony companies and forcing bad products to consumers with the mask of security.

Any reason why not to use Kaldi (https://github.com/kaldi-asr/kaldi)? AFAIK it uses most of the state of the art algorithms.
afsina··on Comparison of British, American and French Systems of Justice
Problem is, there always will be murderers, abusers and thieves. Preventing crime is the right thing to do, but I don't think it is the answer for determining right degree of punishment if a crime is committed.
afsina··on Comparison of British, American and French Systems of Justice
And 8 years is justified because of it? Why not 1 year? Or none?
afsina··on Comparison of British, American and French Systems of Justice
Sure when a low-life kills your children with cold blood and get away with it for 8 years, I would like to see your reaction after murderer goes out of jail and smiles at you.

Çarşaf has the meaning of table cloth in current Turkish as well.
afsina··on $12M stolen from 1,400 convenience store ATMs across Japan in 2 hours
There are some small religious groups that uses a face veiling clothing called "çarşaf". This was also historically used in Ottoman era. this setimes covers below nose, sometimes shows the face. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%87ar%C5%9Faf Usage seems like .01 to 2 percent of women.

True that in Turkey very little amount of women wears clothing that veils the face, but you are over reacting. Previous commenter just count two potential ways of avoiding ATM surveillance.

Actually, my point was, the amount of money was not the point of the article, but being the richest man yet having a less comfortable life was.
