afarviral··on On Front Porch Forum, politics is fair game but unkindness is prohibited
I've encountered this idea before from people with anti-woke tendencies; that they think woke people are holding them responsible for causing offense as though causing offense is the harm that the woke crowd believes needs to be stopped. Anyway, I just thought that view on things was funny. If anyone claiming to be woke does think this than they are more of a prude/puritanist/pedant than woke. I understand the thought that anti-woke people have but it's just a misunderstanding. The concern around hateful speech is around actual harm such as systematic ostracization of a group.

Yes, that is the false-balance logical fallacy... Which seems to be the singularity around which people are circulating in this conversation. That's not to say that popularity of a certain view can't result in the suppression of those holding an opposing view, but what people seem to forget is one of those perspectives will actually be closer to the truth than the other (except rarely, when they are both off the mark by a long shot).
afarviral··on The Decline of Etiquette and the Rise of 'Boundaries' (2022)
This article talks as if the author is mystified by the concept of boundaries or as if this is a mirky concept. However, I think this has been fairly well layed out by writers on the topic of healthy psychological development. Those who overshare of are walled off have not developed boundaries according to many common theories around personal development. Thinking that one must divulge everything compulsively shows a lack of individuation and self reliance, while being overly walled off or detached is usually a poor coping strategy related to not trusting others. Finding a balance may not be so perilous with a few roleplays and rules of thumb.

afarviral··on Study: Consumers Actively Turned Off by AI
I tend to agree. If you asked about a feature which uses some kind of ML under the hood to deliver that feature you'd different results. I think companies should urgently pull back on mentioning AI at all if they want any credibility at this point.
afarviral··on I am starting an AI+Education company
While I'm thankful for schooling for teaching me a variety of things, occasionally recognizing my passions and helping to hone them, it is amusing the disruptive and annoying things I did with the school computers that ultimately became my carreer.
afarviral··on I am starting an AI+Education company
Agreed. There's a really specific form of nostalgia where a matured and adhd-managed person would simply LOVE to do school over again now they see the benefit and realise how absolutely fascinating and achievable learning is. Imagine how easy school would be for a mature adult! I wish being held back a couple of years was normal and encouraged, especially for boys. My life satisfaction would be way higher.

Community gardens, sports, religious or interest groups, collectives, contributing in a large household, early work experience, hobbies/interests. It probably is a fairly finite list because societies have optimized for the individual and people are often only active within of a community at work or in education facilities. So a part of a solution in my view would be establishing more communities that are separate from the family... they might look a lot like schools though, so maybe we should just focus on those? There's more need for new communities to be established for other age ranges.
afarviral··on I am starting an AI+Education company
I mean ... many people went to school as students for a good 12 years. That's likely tainted experience, less objective perhaps, but nontheless valid experience.
afarviral··on I am starting an AI+Education company
But how to harness "Bugger all" so that it results in educated students? Because my understanding is everyone likes to do stuff.. no one really does nothing, but often unproductive/consumptive things if not channelled.
afarviral··on Brain circuit scores identify clinically distinct biotypes in depression/anxiety
As someone formerly diagnosed with ADHD I tend to agree with you, but I thought there were studies which found specific genes and brain structures common to many people diagnosed with ADHD, I need to look in to this. On symptoms alone the overlap between trauma-noise and ADHD means someone with C-PTSD may share the symptoms of ADHD and vice versa but psychologists need only be aware of the conditions which are often confused and find criteria to rule one or the other out. There's no doubt that many of disorders/conditions in the DSM need more work to make them as helpful as they can possibly be, and for the world to recognize that they are clusters of symptoms not true things with firm borders (unless they turn out to be through neuro-science). Once certain issues become recurrent/troublesome enough to seek a diagnosis I only hope the DSM aligns people to something which is helpful, whether it be pharmicological or developing coping strategies. Some may find it invalidating for their DSM diagnosis to be questioned but it's not an attack on the validity of their problems, only on what the labels are referring to.
afarviral··on Brain circuit scores identify clinically distinct biotypes in depression/anxiety
I think thats andoando's point, people do things fairly unconsciously so symptoms which align them with a particular diagnosis can be absent for a multitude of reasons. In your case you developed an unconscious habit of frisking your pockets as part of developing a coping strategy. It may be coping with "ADHD" or coping with being a flawed human as we all are.
afarviral··on How enterprise software is like baby clothing
ServiceNow is great if your project/architecture people are really great. The mistake is expecting that OOTB features will be enough (with only a few tweaks) or that the product itself will steer you toward best pratices (NOPE!). Its a bag of great parts which require extremely careful assembly and a disciplined approach in implementing the simplest, and most elegant build. YAGNI. Case>Req>RITM>SCTASK is a lot of layers of bloat just for a single user request.

Exactly! I think he is just lining his pockets on this stuff as all the many other pseudoscience and snake oil salesman before him.

afarviral··on Is the Sun Conscious? (2021) [pdf]
Being a kook and holding degrees in science are not mutually exclusive. His theories are intriguing nonsense in the sense that they have little to no evidence to support them. Their deeply conjectural nature is what defines them as kooky.
afarviral··on Show HN: PyKidos, Teach Your Kid Python in the Browser
It's the friendlier syntax. With the same conditional in javascript and python, the python version reads a little more like english. The same can can be said for loops. However, JS is right there in your browser so I would argue its much more accessible. Also the usecases for javascript are more aligned with junior coders (browser games, toy projects with a visual element etc), though to dig in to these you have to learn about the web dom which is quite overwhelming.

I'm not saying that free speech need be chucked away, but that we should strive to maintain a balance which protects societies from bad actors. Merely misgendering someone isn't necessarily abusive, but a pattern of consistent harassment is. If a privately owned company want to allow the former and not the latter, then I'm okay with it.
afarviral··on Natron: Open-source alternative to Adobe After Effects
I actually needed to do some compositing work with it, several days after my original post, to get around some limitations of Davinci. It was a little unintuitive but could be a really powerful tool in a compositing pipeline!
afarviral··on Kdenlive 24.02 open source video editor released
That's another great suggestion, and probably a pretty easy contribution to tackle for someone. I'll make a mental note to look in to it next time I'm on holiday.
afarviral··on Kdenlive 24.02 open source video editor released
Kdenlive is great! I just used this recently to create some transitions with transparency. I normally use DaVinci Resolve but I couldn't figure out how to export a video with a straight alpha channel, only premultiplied (it only lets you do this for individual clips, not compound clips or a whole timeline).

I think it's fair to say Kdenlive exposes much more power to the user, but I felt that I had a bit of learning to do to understand a few things which have opinionated defaults in programs like Davincei Resolve. For instance, I had to use a composition between two tracks and choose the type of compositing to use between them in order to get transparency exported, whereas in other programs this would default to add or multiply which behaves in a predictable way with less effort (but with less control).

In saying that it feels like Kdenlive is an incredible amalgamation of very powerful plugins and parts!

I wish it had a bezier curve editor for things like fades or tweaking keyframe animations.

After a while I switched to blender (since I used it to create the source footage) but it was a little glitchy, the video somehow getting out of sync with animated opacity and it confused me how you "Render Animation" in blender which is the same option as for rendering your (3D) Scene in blender, and where to find the option to turn off the video editor composition which overrides this as soon as you start adding clips to the video editor. It doesn't really compare as it's just blender, with all it's intricacies, and video editing bolted on to it, whereas Kdenlive is just about video editing.

Anyway, great work!

I sense that with AGI all the outcomes will be a little less assured, since it is general-purpose. We won't know what hit until it's over. Was it a pandemic? Was it automated-religion? Nuclear weapons seem particularly suited to MAD, but not AGI.

Hmm, indeed
afarviral··on YouTube Music team laid off while workers testified about working conditions
I resonate with the idea of "free speech" in terms of avoiding government oppression, it is a really important and foundational idea. As a catch-all, however, I don't think it works quite so well in the age of social media. Ideas are spreading like wildfire which have no rhyme or reason to them, that cater to psychological maws and not facts, and a bulwark of free speech arms liars with the power to reach millions with a few keystrokes. The power of reason has consistently lost to more blunt instruments. So I think it's, at best, neutral for social media platforms to drop people that aren't woke. As for legal constructs aiming to protect minorities, they don't plausibly set up a slippery slope to dictatorship in my view. I'm of the view that literal absolute free speech that allows any speech no matter how directly harmful or immediately dangerous is itself detrimental to a well-functioning society and public safety.

I often notice transphobic people trying argue that "free speech" is being eroded around bills impacting trans and find this unpersuasive, even childish.

afarviral··on OpenAI and Elon Musk
That makes little intuitive sense to me. Help me understand why increasing the number of entities which possess a potential-weapon is beneficial for humanity?

If the US had developed a nuclear armament and no other country had would that truly have been worse? What if Russia had beat the world to it first? Maybe I'll get there on my own if I keep following this reasoning. However there is nothing clear cut about it, my strongest instincts are only heuristics I've absorbed from somewhere.

What we probably want with any sufficiently destructive potential-weapon are the most responsible actors to share their research while stimulating research in the field with a strong focus on safety and safeguarding. I see some evidence of that.

afarviral··on OpenAI and Elon Musk
There is no clear advantage to multiple corporations or nation states each with the potential to bootstrap and control AGI vs a single corporation with a monopoly. The risk comes from the unknowable ethics of the company's direction. Adding more entities to that equation only increases the number of unknown variables. There are bound to be similarities to gun-ownership or countries with nuclear arsenals in working through this conundrum.
afarviral··on Natron: Open-source alternative to Adobe After Effects
Yeah I have a lot of love for DaVinci, and for black magic's decision to maintain a Linux version of the software. Quite funky UX but a solid piece of software overall. It may be the best free closed source video editting program, with the open source alternatives trailing quite far behind in terms of stability and features/usability (not that you shouldn't spin up KDEnlive and give it a chance!).
afarviral··on YouTube Music team laid off while workers testified about working conditions
So words and representation are simply unimportant in your view or just a little less important? If so that's essentially what I thought being "woke" was, simply being "awake" (aware of) psycho-socio and socio-econonomical (structuralist) factors that affect us all. Waking up from simple prejudices against people. The narrative that it's all gone too far may have some truth to it, but it's also a convenient narrative to discredit, scapegoat and undermine the movement.
afarviral··on Most people with addiction simply grow out of it (2014)
The "by any means necessary" method...? I think a society based around the normalization of this level of punishment is distopian. Achieving the lowest opiate addiction rate possible may not be worth it given the probability of wrongful incarceration/death, its optimising the wrong thing. I think humanity should just accept the multi-facetedness of the universe and work on systems which work without compromising our humanity. We are hooked on mental shortcuts and quick fixes.
