aey··on EBPF is turning the Linux kernel into a microkernel
EBPF is ridiculously awesome. It’s safe enough to jit in ring-0!

We built a rust tool chain that can output ebpf elfs :). https://github.com/solana-labs/rust-bpf-builder

aey··on It’s Time to Build
There is 0 evidence to suggest that private corporations wouldn’t have figured out the same thing. Or those same people sitting around at MIT wouldn’t have built the same thing without darpa.

It’s not like “communication“ is an industry that is starving for investment or talent.

The government sucks at spending money. Giving to the banks is the least stupid thing to do. The banks at least have some way to propagate it down to large funds and eventually to smaller funds that have some sense in what is a worthwhile investment or not.

aey··on Coronavirus-afflicted global economy is almost certainly in recession
> The large number of empty apartments being rented 3-4 nights a month on AirBnb in most large cities seems to indicate otherwise.

High rent for shitty apartments has been part of SF and NYC life for 30 years before Airbnb. This is more of a NIMBY problem. It’s politically easier to blame Airbnb then to build high rises with affordable rent and change the “culture” of the neighborhood /barf

aey··on Coronavirus-afflicted global economy is almost certainly in recession
They are not actually hoarding “wealth”. No one is sitting on a pile of apartments, or ventilators, or college spots, or food distribution capacity. There is fixed amount of that stuff out there right now.

If it was possible to produce apartments for you for half the price, or deliver food, or an fda approved ventilator, and still have a profit investors would be jumping over themselves to do so.

Businesses are hoarding cash because they predict a drop in revenue and want to save as much as they can so they can continue operations and realign for the new economy.

aey··on Malleable Systems: Software must be as easy to change as it is to use it
The unfortunate outcome is more yaml and less lisp or small talk :(
aey··on First sighting of Majorana fermion on a common metal
> Now the MIT-led team has observed evidence of Majorana fermions in a material system they designed and fabricated, which consists of nanowires of gold grown atop a superconducting material, vanadium, and dotted with small, ferromagnetic "islands" of europium sulfide.

Material science is dope

aey··on Free System Programming Textbook (Illinois CS241)
Almost 20 years after, recurrence annihilators still blow my mind.

http://jeffe.cs.illinois.edu/teaching/algorithms/notes/99-re...

I wish I was a better student, but there was at least 1 bar with $1 drinks on any given night.

aey··on Free System Programming Textbook (Illinois CS241)
Amazing school! I was class of 2003. It was a really great combination of hard computer science topics along side close to the metal programming. I graduated proficient in Vim, C/C++, make, kernel driver development, digital control systems, networking AND complexity theory, algorithms, languages, error analysis, protocols, operating systems etc... I got B’s, still somehow remember differential equations. Couldn’t be happier with the result :)
aey··on Koenigsegg’s 2.0-liter no-camshaft engine makes 600 horsepower
let’s call that level 2 :)
aey··on Koenigsegg’s 2.0-liter no-camshaft engine makes 600 horsepower
A vast majority of deforestation for crop land occurs to feed the meat that we eat. How about this sweet car is only available to level 2 vegetarians and above?
aey··on Elon Musk: Tons of C++/C engineers needed
Why not rust?
aey··on Anti-cheat kernel driver
I think we are getting to an age where reboots could be near instant.
aey··on Anti-cheat kernel driver
Why not a trusted boot into a live CD that only runs the game?
aey··on Decentralize Messaging
It feels like we are saturated by messengers and social networks. Twitter, fb, slack, discord, matrix, signal, whatsapp, wechat, telegram... I am not sure what decentralization could bring there.
aey··on Impossible Pork
One could make the argument that treating animals poorly lowers the value of life.

Kind of like if someone has a poorly maintained house in your neighborhood, it impacts the value of your house.

aey··on Ask HN: I've been slacking off at Google for 6 years. How can I stop this?
Work smarter not harder. Your brain should be sweating not your fingers.

I worked at a Big Corp, and would often spend the day surfing or training for ironmen, and coding at the cafe shop between sessions.

My reviews came back nearly the top ranking consistently. My “secret” if anything was jumping into the hardest technical problem available to me and taking it on largely myself.

The folks that were promoted faster were the ones that put out business critical fires and spent 80 hour weeks debugging customer issues. Which was well deserved imho.

Google is a huge company, with tons of opportunity. Your risk adjusted return there is probably higher than YC. If you can’t figure out how to hit homeruns at Google you are likely to fail everywhere else.

Your managers job is to tell you what you need to do to become a “critical” employee that’s on the fast promotion track.

aey··on Authoritarian nations are turning the internet into a weapon
Even 70s Soviet surveillance was comparatively brutal to todays Russia's troll farms. Ask any soviet jews.
aey··on Authoritarian nations are turning the internet into a weapon
Unpopular opinion: Its a sign of the world becoming more liberal and free. These kinds of weapons don’t directly kill hundreds of thousands of people. It’s propaganda wars. Let’s hope all future wars are fought only on the internet.
aey··on Kurt Gödel and the Mechanization of Mathematics
It’s an open question if it is decidable to show that P=NP problem is decidable :). We may live in a universe where undecidable problems exist and it may not ever be possible no show that they are undecidable. Which imho is kind of beautiful. Even if we live in a simulation it is so incomprehensible that it might as well be God to us.
aey··on Show HN: Kong – Physical Cryptocurrency
Just personalize the currency to your bank teller. Would Mark reject a deposit in SuperMarks?
aey··on Extended BPF: A New Type of Software [pdf]
It’s a culmination of decades of research and implementation to mainstream Ring-0 OS kernels that are upgradable at runtime with untrusted userspace code.
aey··on Extended BPF: A New Type of Software [pdf]
It’s doesn’t have a stack pointer, just stack frames. So hardware that doesn’t implement a stack can execute BPF kernels.
aey··on Extended BPF: A New Type of Software [pdf]
BPF is an awesome VM. A huge thanks to Brendan on the work he has done to make it usable outside the kernel.

We built a whole rust tool chain around it.

aey··on Worker-Owned Apps Are Trying to Fix the Gig Economy
It’s largely a solved problem. My insurer USAA has a ride-share add-on that costs an additional $10 a month.
aey··on Worker-Owned Apps Are Trying to Fix the Gig Economy
Uber covers insurance. https://www.uber.com/us/en/drive/insurance/

It’s not all hard to extrapolate mileage depreciation based on car prices.

I feel like these laws are coming from well meaning people who don’t actually represent anyone earning money driving for Uber.

Why are we not seeing driver strikes driving these changes?

aey··on Worker-Owned Apps Are Trying to Fix the Gig Economy
If your narrative was true, why wouldn’t drivers quit in droves?

My retired dad drives an Uber. He built a spreadsheet and did the math on car deterioration and gas costs and is happy with the result. If Uber is exploiting anything, it’s idle labor.

I don’t own any Uber or Lyft stock. I think worker owned apps could potentially hurt Ubers market share if the drivers collectively push them and prices are at least 20% cheaper or faster.

aey··on Ask HN: What's a promising area to work on?
Crypto is the internet in 1996, and you are telling me I missed the train because SUN Microsystems is going to be the first trillion dollar company.
aey··on Ask HN: What's a promising area to work on?
Crypto! 17% of the worlds GDP is spent on financial services. Software can eat it all.
aey··on Andrew Yang's ideas on automation and mass unemployment are not based in reality
Sorry that is just plain wrong. As of 2019 support services are mostly outsourced to India/Philippines or other places. US call center jobs lost to chatbots vs India is negligible at this point.

Redfin has a tiny fraction of real estate sales, and hasn’t broken into it anywhere locally, or is showing any real signs that it will. Turns out it’s a little harder to self serve a home purchase vs a cab or vacation rental.

aey··on “We have no reason to believe 5G is safe”
I think you just answered your own question. As detection improves, so will the rates at which cancer is detected.
