aetherspawn··on Beyond All Reason (Free Total Annihilation Inspired RTS)
Great game, technically impressive, but the community can be quite mean and toxic. I played for around a year after having played other TA Spring RTS for a few years prior, and if you don’t follow the exact meta of the month (whatever that might be) in terms of build order and things, people can get really aggro and your team can vote to kick you and take your units.

Also, one particularly aggravating part of the community is that it’s considered courtesy to surrender once the front line is broken instead of playing the game out and letting the back eco players try and recover it.

The drafting for picking map spots is done in order of seniority, and the good players take all the low stress spots which leaves the newer players to take the more difficult spots. This feeds into a loop where the senior players get aggro at the new players for letting the front break down, but simultaneously they won’t take it themselves even though it’s the more important position.

I stopped playing because I felt like I had a lot of negative interactions in every 2nd or 3rd game. The front player blames the back player, the back player blames the front player, everyone flames the weakest player.

aetherspawn··on Show HN: TownSquare, a tiny presence layer for websites
Make a MapleStory-like one where each website can design their own room, and you can kill mobs and bosses and stuff. It would be neat if the characters and items persisted between.

Edit: a super smash brothers-like would be fun too. Maybe the page itself could be the platforms.

aetherspawn··on Tesla allegedly in autopilot mode crashes into Texas house, woman killed
Haha. Driving through Sydney is way worse than Los Angeles. We don’t all live out in the sticks with snakes in our boots.
aetherspawn··on Tesla allegedly in autopilot mode crashes into Texas house, woman killed
Well, I’ve seen it very confidently and correctly navigate rural unmarked roads, and drive around rocks and logs across the road and things like this. I find it hard to believe it would drive through a huge stationary object like a house, which I imagine is definitely in the training data.

I guess I’m not saying it’s impossible, but I think at this stage it’s improbable.

aetherspawn··on Tesla allegedly in autopilot mode crashes into Texas house, woman killed
That’s exactly the thing. We’re on FSD 13 and America is on FSD 14, we’re always about a year behind. Yours is significantly better than ours (being RHD market), but ours still wouldn’t drive through a house.
aetherspawn··on Tesla allegedly in autopilot mode crashes into Texas house, woman killed
Ok, 3 things.

1) I’ve put enough kms on FSD - it’s taken me across Australia a few times, probably 10,000kms in total - to know that it isn’t going to drive into a house.

2) Even if FSD is enabled, there’s loads of things you can do to create an accident like press the brakes or accelerator pedals, which doesn’t necessarily disengage FSD right away, so let’s just wait for the telemetry to get released.

3) Regardless of who was controlling it, why did this guy let his car jump the kerb and go through a house? Why was he going fast enough?

Sad for all involved.

Edit: my experience is HW4 by the way.

Well, we also have sanctions on the Middle East, and we’ve warned China that they will get sanctions if they invade Taiwan.

Maybe we should have sanctions on America, but our politicians are not exactly brave.

aetherspawn··on How many of the 170k English words do you know?
The sampling needs to be smarter than make me pick the meanings of 100 words. If I get the first two correct, it should skyrocket the difficulty and assume I’m okay with the easy words, not make me sit through more.
aetherspawn··on Hyundai buys Boston Dynamics
This article is AI slop and it’s on a news site. How embarrassing.
aetherspawn··on Ten years of ClickHouse in open source
My country literally has sanctions on your country. If I do any projects with you, I’ll pay a fine of $200K and go to jail for up to 10 years.

It’s not racism, it’s just caution.

That’s sad because I’ve always wanted to visit Russia and from the outside it looks like a really interesting place.

Now, if you could change your government to one that listens to the European Court of Human Rights (namely: don’t start random wars, respect freedom of religion and respect people’s right not to participate in useless wars they don’t believe in) then we’d be best friends.

aetherspawn··on US battery manufacturing output continues to break records
The time scale here is a joke. In 2016 nobody with less than a million dollars drove EVs and the production has barely doubled since then, despite EV uptake increasing probably 100x

That basically means US batteries aren’t going in anything useful to the EV boom, otherwise there would be proportional increases

aetherspawn··on Consciousness likely not unique to earthlings, paper says
Despite the general consensus, I disagree with the idea that you can explain consciousness in an entirely physical way.

That’s because consciousness allows an object to experience its wholeness, but there is no physical explanation as to what makes an object ‘whole’, for example smooshing two brains together doesn’t result in a single consciousness any more than cutting a brain in half results in two. Yet, the same action by another mechanism (reproduction) does create a new consciousness.

Fool me once. Fool me twice. Fool me thirty three times and here we are trying lucky number 34.
aetherspawn··on Waymo Premier
Yes and most people use their car for around 2% of the time they own it. The rest of the time it’s parked up.
aetherspawn··on Waymo Premier
Hm, don’t like the offering. It seems standoffish.

If you want to make Waymo into a SaaS and get people really using it, then it’s easy:

$100 per month - Unlimited rides

$200 per month - Unlimited priority rides

Build enough trust in that and people might even get rid of their cars.

But in my opinion the problem is the feeling of spending money. People want to avoid that feeling at all costs, or at least want to feel like they’re getting a good deal. Everyone else is just driving around for free so it’s gonna take a lot to feel like you’re getting a good deal paying for a Waymo.

People who take cabs are forced to take cabs. That market is pretty finite. What if you can tap the market of people who need to get places but would rather do other things in the back seat?

aetherspawn··on Mercedes‑Benz starts large‑scale production of electric axial flux motor
Probably not. A huge disadvantage of axial flux motors is they have a large number of poles, which means that they get less efficient at high speed because they require say 5x as much switching.

This makes them kind of unsuitable for power generation and really high power motors (despite their power density) where the main way you get more power is just to spin really fast.

The other disadvantage is they have such a low amount of material in them, that the stator overheats really easily. And the topology of the motor makes it really difficult to get the heat out efficiently, which again limits their maximum power.

aetherspawn··on New Beam Spring Keyboards
These are definitely not robust. The product description mentions about 5 times that it will most likely be broken when it arrives to you, and will definitely break again in months or years so recommends buying extra first aid kits with spare parts so you can tinker it and keep it working.

aetherspawn··on Shantell Sans (2023)
Do you think a corporate brand would get away with using this font site-wide?

In an increasingly sterile and AI world, is a human centric approach a good thing albeit possibly unprofessional by current standards?

aetherspawn··on Build Adafruit projects right from Firefox
Ah okay, thanks. My company makes web based diagnostic tools for automotive. At the moment we are Chrome-only because the CAN bus dongle doesn’t support serial.

If the standards committee backpedaled on WebUSB it would literally destroy my company.

aetherspawn··on Cloudflare Flagship
Cloudflare are winning these days, they’re just lacking good fine grained permissions. You still have to make an entirely separate account for prod, which messes up SSO since one domain can only be bound to one account.
aetherspawn··on Build Adafruit projects right from Firefox
Is Web USB also supported?
aetherspawn··on Samsung chip workers will get an average $340k bonus as AI profits soar
Unions are basically mafia.
aetherspawn··on Replacing My ISP Router with a UniFi Cloud Gateway Max
Actually that’s exactly what it does (seems), because it works fine without internet.

I say this authoritatively because I have a ‘huge’ small business deployment of like 20 UniFi devices, and the internet breaks virtually every time I change the complex routing setup. If it were not for this, my setup would be unmanageable.

I have to flip flop between unifi.com (for when I break the wifi routing) and local (for when I break the internet), but boy is having both options handy!

aetherspawn··on Samsung chip workers will get an average $340k bonus as AI profits soar
Engineers are awful at advocating for themselves, and that’s why they study and work twice as hard as lawyers and finance, have less perks (travel, food, cars, private offices) yet they get paid half as much.
aetherspawn··on Replacing My ISP Router with a UniFi Cloud Gateway Max
I think the mistake the OP made was going to unifi.com for the setup, when in fact you can go to 192.168.1.1 and set it up fully locally from there.

The cloud management is great after setup, but not during setup because yeah you keep losing connection to it whenever you break the internet or whatever. This is greatly alleviated with their fancy 5G router they just released, which allows you to remote manage even if the internet is broken.

aetherspawn··on Not alive, but not dead: disembodied human brains used for drug testing
Live dissection and experimentation on “alive but drugged” human brains is mental. How do you ensure that you aren’t torturing a brain that can’t see, hear or scream? How are you held accountable?
aetherspawn··on Dogma 25 – Vow of Chastity (2025)
It kind of protects against low budget sci-fi I guess, which could be a net good thing.

Under the rules you could attempt to shoot Resident Alien, but not Star Trek.

aetherspawn··on Welcome to the Strip Mining Era of OSS Security

I get like 33 and a half million spam messages per day to my Shopify store, all bots using Gmail addresses.

Google really need to get it together. Their sender reputation bypasses all the normal spam filters, but if it was up to me…
