aesthetics1··on Ask HN: Which websites do you visit?
I used to have a dozen or so sites that I visited on a regular basis, but I really grew tired of comment sections devolving into "who can post a meme the fastest" competitions. One reason why I keep coming to HN is because of the targeted discussion, and the lack of these types of cheap humor comments or karma grabs.

I find myself looking for more "adult" communities nowadays, and it has been a struggle to find them.

EDIT: Typo

aesthetics1··on Fidget Spinners: Why Being Interesting Can Do More for You Than Being Useful
These have started showing up all over our office. Kind of like a stress ball, but louder.
aesthetics1··on Google I/O 2017
Google simply does not do this. They are very transparent about their security and privacy policies and I encourage you to read through the policies. Google uses the data internally to improve your experience - they are not in the business of selling your data to third parties.
aesthetics1··on Google plans ad-blocking feature in Chrome browser
"In one possible application Google is considering, it may choose to block all advertising that appears on sites with offending ads, instead of the individual offending ads themselves. In other words, site owners may be required to ensure all of their ads meet the standards, or could see all advertising across their sites blocked in Chrome."

I like this approach. It punishes site owners for running malicious or badly-behaved ads. I think this is a step forward. I hate blocking ads across the board - I just want to stop the intrusive and dangerous variety. I can tolerate the rest.

aesthetics1··on A new home for Google Open Source
That's great. Is this site more of a resource for Googlers, and for outsiders to understand the process? A lot of the information I'm reading seems to suggest that.
aesthetics1··on A new home for Google Open Source
It looks like some of these projects repos link to GitHub, while others are hosted on this new platform. Is this a signal that Google is moving away from GitHub, or something else entirely?

Edit: Ah, here's the relevant blog post: https://opensource.googleblog.com/2017/03/a-new-home-for-goo...

aesthetics1··on Got 15 minutes and want to learn Git?
This is cool. Seems a little slow to react though, and I wonder if this could throw some people off.
aesthetics1··on πfs – A data-free filesystem
You cannot bend the rules in this way and still equate it to the question at hand - you're introducing characters outside of base2 in your example. If you stuck within the realm of base2, '2' in its binary form certainly appears in the pattern.

Not only that, but Pi is normal (all digits distributed evenly), and your sequence clearly is not.

I understand what you are saying - indeed there are infinite finite sequences - but it just does not apply here.

aesthetics1··on Small, slick design makes Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 the PC laptop to beat
Dell sells and supports a Developer Edition of this laptop with Ubuntu 16.04.
aesthetics1··on AMD Zen and Ryzen 7 Review: A Deep Dive
This table (in the linked article) shows that each CPU has 16 lanes:

aesthetics1··on AMD Zen and Ryzen 7 Review: A Deep Dive
What is the deal with 16 PCIe lanes? With the move to PCIe storage, this is disappointing. I am happy to see the price/performance is good (which is surely going to force Intel to be competitive again), but if this is targeting the high-end, I can not understand 16 PCIe lanes.
aesthetics1··on Powerful new features for businesses on GitHub.com
Yes - and there's also the fact that you have to get everyone on the same page with tags. It isn't as simple as just moving something where it belongs.
aesthetics1··on Powerful new features for businesses on GitHub.com
I would really just love to be able to group my repositories. Either logically in folders, or in another structure that cleans everything up. Tags help, but it is not enough.

I am happy that they continue to add features like this, but I feel like some of the more common wishlist items are not being addressed.

aesthetics1··on YouTube TV
If this gets around the blackouts, sign me up. Something legal and convenient... This is the way to gain back lost ground on the cord-cutters, and the reason we left Dish/Comcast/etc in droves in the first place. It is simply too complicated or inconvenient to legally get to the different types of entertainment I am interested in viewing.

On the contrary, I can see this going down the path where I am back up to $100/month for entertainment between Netflix, Hulu, YouTube TV, etc.

aesthetics1··on Why do you use Firefox?
Unfortunately these are tree style tabs in a separate window. Bad UX in my opinion.
aesthetics1··on Why do you use Firefox?
Is this not available under Chrome for some reason? Or was it not available when you made your switch (or original browser choice)?
aesthetics1··on Show HN: Bitesnap – Deep Learning Meets Food Logging
I tried out an old photo from December, and it noticed that the date was not today. I was asked if I wanted to add it for that date. I was also able to change the time on the edit meal screen. I think this should be on the input screen - similar to Google Fit. When I am entering an exercise, the time defaults to now, but I can select another time just as easily.
aesthetics1··on Show HN: Bitesnap – Deep Learning Meets Food Logging
My goodness, I just started trying to use MyFitnessPal to track my food intake and was wishing that something like this existed.

Is there a way to save prior entries as meals? I am a boring person and I eat the same thing for breakfast 7 days a week. I would like to just add this with one click instead of selecting: Eggs... Spinach... Oatmeal... etc. MyFitnessPal has this and it is a great time saver.

aesthetics1··on Please, Fix This Shitty Website
I have to admit that I cannot figure out the purpose of this. Did I miss an 'about' section or something? What happens with the nominated sites?
aesthetics1··on Browser auto-fill phishing
I guess I did not think about offscreen or otherwise sneakily positioned form elements. I think the warning is the best way to handle this. I imagine it being something similar to an android permissions popup, where you can check off what should be "shared" (auto-filled) with the site before actually populating the form.
aesthetics1··on Browser auto-fill phishing
Wow, great demonstration. I'd never thought about this being exploited. I wonder if the fix could be something as simple as the browser only allowing non-hidden [Edit: "not visible to the user", I should have said, as this does not appear to auto-fill <input type="hidden"> ] fields to be auto-filled. Otherwise, a warning about what auto-fill information (IE "Your name and credit card information are going to be submitted, continue?") has been filled in would be a nice touch. Maybe a browser extension could accomplish this?
aesthetics1··on Resilient Web Design
For a book about web design, this surely is poorly designed. I can't resize the text with my built-in browser zoom to make it comfortable to read. Everything seems to be based on the size of the browser window.
aesthetics1··on Ask HN: What service would you pay $1k/mo for?
Take a look at Magic (https://getmagic.com/signup). If you are fine speaking with your assistant via text, this could be a good option.
aesthetics1··on New MacBook Pro Is Not a Laptop for Developers Anymore
They work excellent with Linux. Dell actually sells a "Developer Edition" of the XPS line with Ubuntu pre-installed.
aesthetics1··on New MacBook Pro Is Not a Laptop for Developers Anymore
The XPS machines (both the 13 and the 15) are excellent. I haven't found anything else that compares across the board.
aesthetics1··on Show HN: Record your screen, share and instantly know when people watch
Where are the videos stored? What does a user need to view a video?
aesthetics1··on Speech Is 3x Faster Than Typing for English and Mandarin on Mobile Devices
I'm with you on this one. I had to set a reminder to "Get the soy milk", and Google's speech recognition picked up "Get this white milk". I knew what it meant so I just saved the reminder instead of correcting it. Unfortunately I cannot rely on speech to send texts, dictate emails, or have any other interaction with other people.
aesthetics1··on Sierra Gets Creative
Did anyone play this game when it was out (not the recent reworked versions)? GameFAQs did not exist, nor did reddit, forums, or other places to discuss strategy and tactics for these sorts of games. There was however a hotline on the back of the instruction manual that you could call for hints - for a low low fee of course.

I remember thinking that the game designers were probably asked to make some of the puzzles frustratingly difficult so that a post-sale revenue stream could be realized.

I also remember playing through these games without the help of the tip hotline. Sharing ideas and discussing strategies with my family. It made for a very fun experience and a very rewarding feeling when you finally figured something out.

It also made for a very frustrating experience when you did something wrong or missed something along the way and had to go back to a very early save point to fix your mistake. I guess you could say that this was poor design but I still have very fond memories of the series.

aesthetics1··on Xiaomi’s first laptop is a Macbook Air rival
The Air has not been refreshed in quite some time - that is his point. He cannot buy a new MacBook Air, because they have not made one in a while.
