aerojoe23··on Balcony solar panels – one-year results
Also he didn't mention an auto disconnect if the power goes out, and as I understand it this is required in most places. You could be responsible for killing someone with out it.

The power is out and the lines are being worked on. The line is supposed to be dead. Your solar system is making power and sends it out of the house, back on the grid.

aerojoe23··on I feel dumb(er) when typing, and smart(er) when writing
I'm only 70 wpm typing and it is still way faster than writing. I think paper is good for doodling though. Like when I want visualize how a system works, but ms paint (or others) works well for this.

aerojoe23··on Hackerrank DMCA Notice
The hashes will sum to something. To do it, at least as far as I understand, you'd have to use https://git-scm.com/docs/git-filter-branch . This will create a divergent history and the new master branch or any other branches that exists will have to be forced pushed. As far as "but local copies of the repo will have the 'problem files' still" - Yes they would. All parties would have to be notified of the legal request.

I'm not a copyright expert but it seems like enforcing this is another step in the erosion of fair use. Something about transformative works. The problem was transformed into a solution.

On the other hand hackerrank's terms of service should have banned this activity. I would imagine it does. I'm not sure how much leverage that gets them legally though. I suppose once you intend to publish it you're no longer an authorized user, and then you're violating that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_Fraud_and_Abuse_Act we see get applied harshly from time to time.

aerojoe23··on People who “drink to cope” can make their symptoms worse: study
What about the whole correlation does not equal causation thing?

Given: They're saying they drink to deal with their symptoms. The symptoms get worse when they drink.

The study concludes: Drinking makes it worse.

But the other option is: Their symptoms would have been even worse without the drinking.

I'm not saying hypothesis is correct, just that the article didn't mention the study addressing it. Unless I missed it.

aerojoe23··on The most underused browser feature: reader mode
I use it for the text to speech in Firefox a lot. When there isn't a pay wall in the way I'll open the page in another tab while reader read's it to me.

This way I can see the text and pictures the way they intended it to be.

Another downside is that text content for other articles on the site that aren't part of the article, will be in the content. On the full site they'll be links or something and you just skip them with out thinking. In text to speech reader mode, it reads them off.

aerojoe23··on The most underused browser feature: reader mode
I love reader mode in Firefox. It will also do text to speech for you.

The voices seem to dependent on something built into the OS. They sound okay on windows and I haven't figured out how to get them to sound good on linux. On windows the voices sound good, but I Wish I could get it to go a little faster. The voices don't sound human so it takes some getting used to.

On linux the voices just sound more harsh. To the point I don't want to use it. If anyone knows a switch to flip or how to install additional voices to make them sound better, that would be great.

aerojoe23··on Ask HN: I feel trapped in my job and city
Sounds like you hate it despite the pay. Retiring early is a nice idea but maybe being happy now would be worth working longer.

Have you talked to your partner? "... I can't expect my partner to move back with me..." Maybe he's more burned out then you think.

I have no idea how you spend your money from your post but maybe take a long look at your life style. Try to figure out what makes you happy and spend time on it. The less you spend the less you need to make to retire early. You may have heard this all before, but I like this post. https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/01/13/the-shockingly-si...

As an aside, I've recently (re-)discovered I enjoy manual labor so have been doing yard work more. Something about it is meditative. The tasks take a long time but are simple and don't require thinking. Looks good when it is done and feels extra rewarding to actually have to sweat to get it done.

aerojoe23··on Npm Audit: broken by design?
It sounds like npm needs a mitigated and irrelevant flag, these flags should include an explanation field. Security teams would also have to accept this as a solved/fix status.

For projects you own you'd have to flag each dependency path though, because for example, one dependency may not have the input for the regex exposed to the end user, while another dependency could.

Maintainers of libraries should also flag the security issues, and an issue with these two statuses on them wouldn't be raised by default. Options should be available to list them though for auditing.

For more security critical teams/projects, a per project setting to alert about any issues the maintainers have flagged irrelevant or mitigated and you'd have to accept them before it it would stop alerting about them.

Lovely thesis. I'd read the rest of the paper if you write it.
aerojoe23··on A review of correlations between big five personality types and life outcomes
The author is over simplifying evolution. A trait maybe passed on to children even though the parent isn't displaying it.

The easiest example of this across many species is homosexuality. As it seems obvious that it would reduce an individuals chances of having offspring. https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn13674-evolution-myths...

There is the added complexity that some positive traits are tied to negative traits. Meaning if the gene stops getting selected the positive trait goes away with the negative one.

And then there is culture. It is clear humans have become the dominant species of our planet (at least for now) and it is our culture and the technology it supports that enable this.

aerojoe23··on Proof-of-work should be banned
The math in this article makes it sound trivial for any major government to destroy bitcoin. https://joekelly100.medium.com/how-to-kill-bitcoin-part-2-no... It points out that "But we can spend more on hardware then they could." is false. Once it was outlawed, they can just seize the mining hardware.

So PoS may actually be more resistant. Instead of acquiring physical hardware governments would have to start acquiring the currency. If they have to purchase it, it will drive the price up. While they maybe able to seize it in this scenario as well, it would seem the virtual crypto world would have better protection than the physical world.

aerojoe23··on Cryptocurrency and NFTs Are Evil
I agree it was a rant, not going to read it again. I am curious if you would agree with this argument:

1. Climate change is very bad and should be avoided at all costs.

2. Atmospheric CO2 causes Climate change.

3. Most electricity that is generated, releases CO2 into the atmosphere.

4. Crypto currencies in their current proof of work form, use an excessive amount of electricity.

5. Therefore crypto currencies cause Climate change and should be avoided at all costs.

aerojoe23··on I Feel Like I Have No Real Interests; My Only Interest Is Making Money
I think this is more of a focus problem than not having an interest in anything.

Starting your own thing is different than being in school or being an employee. If you were "gifted" with the blessing of being good at school life, not having a defined goal for you could be part of the issue. With school

The ability to focus is like a muscle or any other skill, you have to practice it.

aerojoe23··on Ask HN: Microsoft blocked my outlook.com account for using a VPN. Any ideas?
Do you mean the a mount of traffic that the VPN sends to MS would look like an attack?

I think it is just more likely MS doesn't know who you are yet. For example, if you're talking about how you get more captcha to fill out, I think this is because your IP address doesn't have the history to build reputation as you with MS.

aerojoe23··on Is Hacker News Bullshit?
I hangout on hackernews and think I remember "reading" all 3 of GPT-3 articles. I used a screen reader, it makes it fast for me to "read" while I do other things. I generally enjoy the content hackernews links to and often read it before I evaluate the source, because really I'm just looking for something to listen to while I make my tea or something. I noted that they didn't seem to reference anything and decided I would try not to heed the advice they contained.

I did think it was a human. I just thought it was low quality selfhelp stuff that you see out there. The "...too productive" one was more convincing because it felt like more of a personal story that didn't need to have references.
