Corporation, fined
aendruk··on A change of address led to our Wise accounts being shut down
I couldn’t read with it and filtered it out with uBlock Origin:

aendruk··on A worker fell into a nuclear reactor pool
To be fair, you don’t have to be stupid to be clueless. We’re all clueless about plenty of things.
aendruk··on MinIO stops distributing free Docker images
The claim isn’t that “you cannot stop”, but that it’s rude to not communicate about that ahead of time.

Of course the entitlement to volunteer work is also rude, and in my opinion worse.

aendruk··on Why do wind turbines have three blades?
It’s still a basic courtesy.
aendruk··on Just let me select text
The most recent offender I’ve encountered is some SaaS called Termly which barfs out full terms of service, privacy policies, etc. with this human-hostile “feature”. Good luck actually using the contact information they contain.

I added this uBO filter just yesterday:

    app.termly.io##*:style(user-select: unset !important;)
Of course all the links are `target=_blank` too. I really don’t understand the mentality of whomever makes these.
aendruk··on Find SF parking cops
> In rare lightning speed, the SF government changed their site within hours of this site going live. I can't get data from it anymore.

Anyone have a screenshot?

aendruk··on Pontevedra, Spain declares its entire urban area a "reduced traffic zone"
I keep wishing there was a better way to project invitation when in this situation. All I’ve come up with is to appear happy and relaxed—sit upright, look around and smile, eat something as I roll.

We’re so instinctively competitive though it feels hopeless.

aendruk··on Tomorrow's emoji today: Unicode 17.0
It would help if UIs made it easy to see the name of each emoji. Sometimes I even know what semantics I want but can’t discern which image it’s been assigned to.
aendruk··on Tomorrow's emoji today: Unicode 17.0
Is it specified that semantically neutral appear yellow or is the color free to vary by implementation/user preference?
aendruk··on I Don't Have Spotify
Progressive enhancement: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_enhancement

And empirically, failure of a site to follow this principle tends to correlate with being unhealthy or unbearable in other ways.

There are of course countless exceptions, which I allowlist with a couple of clicks. But overall I find browsing this way to be a breath of fresh air.

aendruk··on ICEBlock, an app for anonymously reporting ICE sightings, goes viral
It can monitor your location and notify you about nearby reports.
aendruk··on More on Apple's Trust-Eroding 'F1 the Movie' Wallet Ad
I went through a couple rounds of trying to raise specifically this issue with support before simply uninstalling the app out of principle. They had their chance and burned it.
aendruk··on Soylent Email Database Compromised?
Can confirm I received the described spam at an address only shared with Soylent.
aendruk··on Can your terminal do emojis? How big?
And how do you achieve that, transform the output of every command? Or just patiently play the long game of petitioning on internet forums?
aendruk··on Can your terminal do emojis? How big?
Sounds like a reasonable compromise might be to set a monochrome emoji font in the terminal. I think you’ve convinced me to try it.
aendruk··on WhatsApp introduces ads in its app
Didn't help them [avoid this fate] is how I read it; that doing quite fine was tragically insufficient to escape the maw.
aendruk··on "Localhost tracking" explained. It could cost Meta €32B
I wonder if it’s improved recently. I’ve been cursing at Facebook for years for holding hostage the ability to create WhatsApp group chats when I’ve declined to expose all of my contacts to it, but I just checked again and there’s a “Skip” button now that proceeds to the phone number UI.
aendruk··on Human Food Made with Cultured Animal Cells Inventory
Newly added: Oncorhynchus kisutch (coho salmon)
aendruk··on My website is ugly because I made it
Yeah literally two thirds of this is adversarial. https://0x0.st/83AB.png I reflexively noped out.
aendruk··on Vision Now Available in Llama.cpp
No controls in the training data?
aendruk··on Vision Now Available in Llama.cpp
I’m having a hard time imagining how failure to see an image would result in such a misleadingly specific wrong output instead of e.g. “nothing” or “it’s nonsense with no significant visual interpretation”. That sounds awful to work with.
aendruk··on FOSS infrastructure is under attack by AI companies
I’m a little optimistic here. Step by small step lately the more normal people in my life have been joining this demographic.
aendruk··on I'm the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks
> Each time I traveled up there for work, the border guards were polite and professional. Each time I traveled home, I got pulled aside […]

Interesting, it was the opposite for me, US citizen with CA work permit circa 2016. CBP seemed to not care while CBSA was often irrationally aggressive and suspicious. The closest thing I got to an explanation once after being freed was “We just like you” with a grin.

aendruk··on New York Times shut down Tor Onion service
They started serving an expired TLS certificate on 2024-12-08. I inquired about it a few days after but never heard back.
aendruk··on The Future Is Niri
Tiling Assistant might be worth a try. It can be configured to be pretty out of the way and just add more snapping sizes, different per-monitor if you need.

aendruk··on Firmware update bricks HP printers, makes them unable to use HP cartridges
The general infrastructure for this is already in place and widely used:

https://fwupd.org/lvfs/vendors/

HP already uses this for firmware updates to keyboards and mice. Of course distros typically acquire consent before applying them.

aendruk··on Bayleaf · Building a low-profile wireless split keyboard
> What happens when you forget where a key is

I ask myself where I expected it to be, then update the keyboard accordingly. Eventually it doesn’t happen anymore.

aendruk··on Obsidian is now free for work
Ironic. Two days ago I migrated all my notes to Joplin specifically avoid Obsidian’s complicated licensing around commercial use.
