aegis4244··on Molotov cocktail is hurled at home of Sam Altman
Many, close to most of the "have-nots" just voted to help the "haves" at great cost to themselves. The economic decline across fly over states isn't going to stop. It's going to continue. Resulting in those angry uneducated voters to double down. Those old factory jobs are gone. Unlikely to come back in our or our children's lifetime. They are ideologically opposed to education. Leading to more of the same, just more so. Economically, politically, and educatively.
aegis4244··on How YouTube won the battle for TV viewers
You can. There are extensions and scripts for exactly that. I never use the app, only browse via the web, even on mobile, just with a user agent switcher.
aegis4244··on Ask HN: Books or games to teach kids math
Bedtime Math. My kids loved it.

aegis4244··on Surnames from nicknames nobody has any more
My partner and I did exactly that. She let me choose. Ended up with the surname from one of my favorite literary characters. Changed my first name to match as well. Happened to be a childhood nick name anyway, so I've always answered to it.
aegis4244··on Python type hints may not be not for me in practice
Is that a double negative in your title ? Or is it an inside joke I didn't get ?
aegis4244··on Hoard of coins from Norman Conquest is Britain's most valuable treasure find
Yes, but which half ?
aegis4244··on Ask HN: Former gifted children with hard lives, how did you turn out?
My score was an 8. Depression of course. All the usual problems.Thought I was unhappy because no one loved me. Turned out to be the opposite. Found my own key to a joyful life at 31. Had my first child. Cared for someone else more than myself. Cut off all contact with my family 13 years ago, except my kids. Second best decision I ever made. Best was choosing to raise my girl on my own. You cant fix toxic people, but you can leave them. Later I met a woman who can tolerate me. She prefers to work, is very happy she met a man who would rather hang out with our kids than work. I read "The Happiness Equation in my late 40's, had already stumbled into my own life solutions, but that book really helped explain WHY I felt my life had improved so much. You can get to a mental place you feel safe. You only get so many trips around the sun, take them with a smile, never waste a moment comparing yourself to anyone else. Best of luck.
aegis4244··on Can solar costs keep shrinking?
If you're looking for some inexpensive land that can be fairly remote you might do worse than Cochise county AZ. The county has an opt out permit program as long as you have at least 4 rural acres. You can build whatever you want, no permits, no inspections. There are some restrictions. No bank will give you a mortgage, can't sell or rent it out within 2 years. You can live in your RV while you build, for 2 years I think, with a 3 year extension possible. Lots of sun for solar. Rooftop water collection for water. There are some septic options, composting, or traditional. All legal. A few dozen people on youtube building all kinds of off grid natural buildings. They get together once in a while, let you tour their build, ask questions. A little snow in the winter, not many days above 100F. 4000+ feet elevation. Fiber laid in some surprisingly rural areas. No paved roads type areas. Weird, but cool.

I did the full time RV bit in a class A. Hated it. Too small to live in, too big to travel in. Hate that black tank. Had to leave great camping spots once a week to dump and get more water, or hook up to some sort of developed campgrounds. Sucked. Regret not going for a small schoolie to travel in, large house on 5 acres to live in. That's the new plan, anyway. Best of luck.

aegis4244··on 10% of Cubans left Cuba between 2022 and 2023
Economists say every immigrant is a net economic positive to the nation. They eat,buy food clothing, cars. Every immigrant child is a net negative to the state,at least until they turn 18. But it isn't even. Net neg per kid of maybe 800 a year, positive of each adult of 1200-1600 are the numbers I've heard on freakonomics podcast. Their guests proposed solution was to have the feds pay the states per an immigrant child to offset who bears the costs. I don't think it's even a debatable position that each immigrant is a net economic positive, in the long term. Some political groups worrying about losing their culture is a completely different kettle of fish.

aegis4244··on Sky Asked Govt. To Target Pirate IPTV Resellers via New Dedicated Police Unit
Violating laws against attacking and robbing ships at sea is terrible. Violating laws protecting imaginary property rights is quite another. Don't get them confused.

aegis4244··on Ask HN: What are your favorite sci-fi books?
Anything by Neal Stephenson. (Except Fall, maybe.) Cryptonomicron is my fav modern novel.

Project Hail Mary. The Martian. Artemis.

Expanse series.

William Gibson,s stuff. Loved Peripheral, and it's sequel Agency.

Newpipe.
aegis4244··on Most of my skills are now worth nothing, but 10% are worth 1000x
That is a theme in one of Niel Stephensons novels. He predicted the rise of incoherent rage inducing algorithms for profit. Even implied it would work exceptionally well on right wing rural religious people from middle America. People with money and taste paid for a custom feed, curated by humans.

We can add this to a growing list, along with Google earth and second life.

aegis4244··on Exercism – learn programming languages for free
If you already know any other language, then just Google the solution to that exercise and read it until you grok it. If you don't already know the basics, I found mimo to be great for a quick but not really deep dive in python. Great first step. Exercism is fantastic to learn the differences between languages. The mentoring is free, but it's one of the few online learning resources I would pay for.
aegis4244··on How Big Is Mexico?
That influence hasn't been positive for Mexico.
aegis4244··on Xylazine, a dangerous new drug fuelling Canada’s opioid crisis
You can buy drugs in every high school in America. Same for every prison. You can buy drugs on death row. We have a higher percentage of our population in prison than the soviets, china or Iran. So how far down the police state road do you think the USA needs to go before you figure out this isn't working?
aegis4244··on Oregon partisan rancor spills over into Idaho effort to absorb rural neighbors

aegis4244··on Meta Ending Suspension of Trump’s Accounts
He didn't lead that army. The secret service wouldn't drive him there. He directed them to the capital and then cheered them on though.

aegis4244··on Why Twitter didn’t go down: From a real Twitter SRE
Dems didn't want to throw him out. Pence was a competent politician. Trump wasn't. They wanted him embarrassed, not out. Much like the Brits had a plan to assassinate Hitler before D day. Choose not to. They were afraid he would be replaced by someone competent.
aegis4244··on Disassembling an Amazon Blink Mini camera

aegis4244··on Volkswagen tells brands to pause paid advertising on Twitter

aegis4244··on Ask HN: Is there any “PBS Kids” alternatives these days?
Curiosity Stream might be worth a look. I have a 6 year old, and her youtube history isn't what I'd hoped. I have to look through things with her though. Space stuff, dinosaurs and animals help. It still loses her attention though.

Reading to her is much better. That one on one attention is a drug.

And "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" kicks ass. Have the "Princess Bride", "Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nihm" and "Rascal" lined up.

Roblox and Minecraft are great too, if you just want a time sink with a little creativity. Can teach them to build their own game with Roblox. My 6 year old is a little too young yet, didn't go well when I tried. She likes to play though.

Best of luck....

aegis4244··on Orcas are breaking rudders off boats in Europe
Volgons are the worst.
aegis4244··on Ask HN: How do you teach 9-year old to code?
Going through this now with a very bright group of 4 to 6 year old cousins. Code.org, then any blockly lang capable robot. $50-$150 on Amazon. Dash robot has has great and easy apps already written to use it. Great to get a 5 year old into it. 9 years old ? Go with the build it yourself dump truck and backhoe robot and save $100. Good luck
aegis4244··on Japanese Dome House
The catch is getting a mortgage. It does cost less to build, unless it's not in the standard building codes. It's not. So to legally build it and live in it, you need a structural engineer to draw up the plans and get a county building department to OK the engineer's plans. Also, all the regular trades aren't familiar with it, and give higher "nervous" quotes, if they give any at all. It's just faster and cheaper to build something the building trades call a "shit box". Everyone is familiar with it. Building departments and contractors are ok with it, and most importantly, you can get a mortgage on it.
aegis4244··on Judge refuses to reinstate Parler after Amazon shut it down
Why is it "being enforced politically" or not important ? You are worried about it being "fair" ?

Some humans who run a biz serving other humans stood up and announced "you and you camp Auschwitz shirt friends are odious, we don't want that stank on us".

Is it political ? Maybe. Or maybe they are simply decent humans calling out some pieces of shit.

Other times and places in history people haven't stood up to the evil. In some, they did.

Amazon is fighting the good fight here. Facebook has been an open collaborator. Amazon drew a line in the sand and said " we are on this side, hope you join us"

Amazon was late, but ended up on the right side of history. Evil needs to be told that the rest of us think they are wrong. They can't figure it out on their own.
