adventureartist··on Rent control is back. And that’s bad
The true solution is Zoning Reform. Property owners would build many more units themselves, with their own capital, if allowed to build enough units to make it worthwhile. This doesn't happen because many current property owners (skewing older and wealthier) enjoy the current density and property values based on the current scarcity of units. Rent control is a weak solution to affordability, and has almost no or negative impact on gentrification, and no or negative impact on housing stock growth. Rent control seems like it's for the renter, but it's actually just the only political solution allowed by owner-occupied current property owners. Zoning Reform is the free market solution, allowing an owner of a property to build what they want on their own land. (Solve the homeless problem too...). Time will tell if the democratic scales tip from the NIMBY homeowners to those currently priced out of unit ownership.
adventureartist··on Airbnb Plans to Verify Every Listing
It seems the big thing Airbnb should be verifying is the fake "hosts", where an LLC is renting out a dozen units or more in a city as a business, but then lying to the customer that they are renting "Jack and Judy's flat".
adventureartist··on Ask HN: How to start a new academic discipline?
Find a corporate sponsor(s). It's about the money. Have them fund research through a contract including you, a university, and the corporation. With 10 million dollars, the university will create a position "Department Head of Cyborg Spaghetti". Boom. A field is born.
adventureartist··on Verizon: We Can't Become Dumb Pipes
>Does he really believe he can sell formerly unsuccessful Yahoo services to Verizon subscribers?<

This article misses the point: This is about selling Verizon subscribers through Yahoo/AOL services.

adventureartist··on Israel Proves the Desalination Era Is Here
For some perspective: LA county uses about ~50 Million cubic meters of water per year. The largest Israeli desalinization plant is ~225 Million cubic meters per year. The entire state of California uses ~50 Billion cubic meters of water per year. Very rough numbers
adventureartist··on Israel Proves the Desalination Era Is Here
You are correct. The new plant in San Diego dumps out a ~20% brine IIRC that is supposed to be not as bad as the 50% brine that creates dead spots in the ocean. Not sure about the Israeli brine, but they did help develop the San Diego facility.
adventureartist··on Beijing is banning all foreign media from publishing online in China
They are un-democratic single party capitalists. Like Singapore.
adventureartist··on Carnegie Mellon Reels After Uber Lures Away Researchers
Does anyone else think it's slightly shady to be advising drivers take on loans for vehicles in one hand, while working on making those vehicle loans a bad investment by investing in competing technology in the other?
adventureartist··on Poll: Were you banned by AdSense? When in the cycle were you notified?
I'm interested in these refunds to advertisers. I've never received a refund, but if accounts are being banned constantly, some with tens of thousands of dollars, then it should have been noticed, especially since most of the time I hit my daily spend, then move onto the next day, you cannot just make that up 2 months later. Retroactive activities must take place.
adventureartist··on Google AdSense leak?
As a developer, I have had, and friends have had thier Adsense accounts banned right before payout for legitimate earnings. It hurts so bad to have that happen, and Google gives you little recourse. I cannot speak to the legitimacy of this pastebin, but reading it, it sounds completely plausible. If it walks like a duck...
adventureartist··on Google AdSense leak?
Not being a native English speaker doesn't exactly eliminate the possibility of being a Google employee...
adventureartist··on Bitcoin and Thoughts from Bill Gates
There isn't a lot of reality to the idea that bitcoin is "hard". There is such lack of clear one page explanations to get started that people who don't feel like figuring it out are left in the dark thinking bitcoin is wizardry. It's not, that's why we're all exited about how SIMPLE it is. You have 2 numbers associated with your wallet. You send with one number, you receive with another. You protect those numbers like you would your actual cash filled wallet. That's it. If you can understand the grand system of calling someone on your cell phone, you can grasp Bitcoin.
adventureartist··on Gmail was down
aaaaand we're back
adventureartist··on Soylent on the latest Vice piece
I hope you realize there are more rats in more restaurants and food factories than you think, and that health departments nationally, while quick to cite, fine, and demand changes to your pest control, really understand that rodent problems happen, and don't shut you down for a rat. Rat infestation... yes.
adventureartist··on Hyperloop
I wouldn't be so fast to make that declaration. Elon Musk, Tesla, and SpaceX are pretty influential players right now, and I don't think anyone reading this white paper are anything less than wide eyed at the possibility that the future of travel is written right here and we could build it, for cheaper than the current slow expensive system.

Influential people and money people and politicians are all going to read this and say Sounds great. Elon Musk? I'm listening. 7 Billion? Go on. And scientists are going to chime in, and universities, and people always forget the global reactions. Momentum.

I'm going to keep my faith that this idea has legs.

adventureartist··on Hyperloop
My understanding is that putting the air power in the capsule is in part to make the tube simpler and cheaper to make and maintain.
adventureartist··on An easy way to share files P2P, and how it works
This. Is. Amazing.
adventureartist··on Ask HN: What would it take for you to take action?
I'd like to know my action is leveraged, or helps provide leverage to others. I send emails to my elected officials (personalized like a boss) when I see an effort that starts to gain traction and I can see the power of numbers. If one of the big companies, or a couple of them, came together to say "we're going to make a stand, we need you behind us" I would be there loud and proud, I would email and share and talk about it in person. I want to be part of a movement, and I want to know that my effort isn't wasted or worthless. Give me that and you'll have my energy and voice.
