So that leaves federal funding. Might as well use my taxes to provide funding for public housing projects.
The system is slow and challenging to navigate and eventually (after several years) my mother was able to navigate the system to become a court appointed guardian.
On the other side, I have also been in government appointed committees that set housing policy and have had to listen to many “experts” explain that housing is the solution for homelessness and their suggestions is usually along the lines of “relax the codes and permitting process so builders can build more homes”. Needless to say, I’m somewhat sceptical of this argument but that is probably mostly due to my own bias.
Imho, I think our tax money should be going to social services and universal healthcare.
Finding the right tractor for a farm is a time consuming task, and currently it will take 6+ months to receive a new tractor.
Swapping a tractor requires having another tractor for farm tasks, or delaying farm tasks until the swap is complete. Delaying farm tasks is not really an option, as that can negatively impact the overall operation.
Another thing to think about is all the tooling, equipment, and accessories that are used with a tractor. These also have requirements of what type of tractor is used, and which features it has.
Those too are “conversations” that are testing someone’s ability and knowledge.
My team understood the strengths and weaknesses, and we utilised almost all of the features that it provided.
The >2.x releases didn’t provide much value for us, and didn’t solve any problems that we had. So the motivation to migrate and refactor was low.
I still think Angular 1.x is a decent library, and have often contemplated contributing fixes/security to a fork.
Its simple amazing.
For context, I am considering moving back to the US.
With a skilled workers visa you are eligible to apply for permanent residency after 3 years, and for citizenship after 7 years. Norway does allow duel-citizenship.
If we stay, and continue to learn Norwegian, we could (in theory) have duel citizenship in 4 more years.
I moved to Norway to work for a specific Norwegian employer and already had them lined up before moving to Norway. If you are a software engineer or developer, the market here in Oslo is in demand for skilled professionals.
If you have a valid visa, you have access to all the social benefits here in Norway. It does take a couple of months before you are in the system.
With a skilled workers visa, I also have the flexibility to switch employers (as long as I continue to work as a software engineer/developer) without having to reapply. However, I’m not allowed to freelance or have a side business here in Norway.
By far the biggest sacrifices are family, friends and social network.
However, the opportunities for growth and learning far outweigh the cons.
Staying connected with people in different time zones can be challenging, but technology provides so many solutions.
For example I use FaceTime to talk with family. It doesn’t cost anyone anything (if they are connected to WIFI) and I don’t have to deal with the cost for international calls.
Building a new social network is hard. Meeting people (especially now) is hard. You will want to dedicate a large portion of time to put yourself in environments that can allow you to meet people, who will hopefully become friends.
The growth and learning opportunities are life changing and I think it is certainly worth trying to live and work abroad for a couple of years.
I can try to answer any questions or clarify if anyone has any more questions.
I’ve often thought about starting a hardware company that provides all the source code, schematics, bill of materials with the sale of a product. This is a dream and a desire I have for the things that I do buy.
For example, I have several digital cinema film cameras that I do not plan to upgrade or sell. Unfortunately they are showing their age and have some fixable faults. I have spent the last two years to reverse engineering these cameras to identify the fault. If only I had a schematic.
I don’t expect the industry or politics to change any time soon. If only a hardware company could change the status quo by enabling their customers to be enabled to have full ownership and access.
From my own experience, 9 out of 10 people will not understand and will say anything to “be polite”. But those few people who do listen (even if they don’t understand) are worth finding.
