adoxyz··on Ask HN: Become a 10x developer with LLM? Myth? Reality?
It has def helped me become more efficient in the sense that I can get ideas of how things could be implemented. Or for use cases like creating a regex to do something.

Has it made me 10x, probably not, has it improved my efficiency, 100%.

adoxyz··on We Need To Talk About Vercel
Personally, I love how approachable Vercel is and for most small things I've used Vercel for, it has been an absolute delight.

My issue with using Vercel for "real workloads" is the pricing though. 100GB of Bandwidth for $40 is a blocker.

I love how easy the experience is to throw up an app and test it in the real world, the dashboard is great, build times are excellent, but I can't see myself paying that high of a premium.

adoxyz··on Walmart’s redesigned website looks better than Amazon
I don't really care about the look and feel of the website as much as utility. And I feel like Walmart has much better utility these days. Amazon search results are littered with drop shipped garbage from Aliexpress on 95% of search queries.
adoxyz··on Tesla removes parking sensors, the results are predictably terrible
Most car manufacturers had to deal with chip and part shortages. The way many of them handled it was delivering a car without features and offering to add the feature back when it's in stock free of charge or gave discounts for not including the feature.

The way Tesla handled it was piss poor. Removing USS 6 months before they had a solution. Delivering a half-baked solution that is less trustworthy than not having it all. And it's par for the course. Smart Summon hasn't had an update since 2019 and is a joke. Auto park is useless for most cases. If Tesla had come out and said "Look, supply chain is fucked, we're shipping without these features, but we'll add them back in the future" I don't think many people would be pissed. But them trying to frame it as a positive and better alternative, when it clearly isn't, is just annoying at this point.

adoxyz··on Tesla removes parking sensors, the results are predictably terrible
I have a 2018 Tesla Model 3. It has been the absolute best car I've ever owned. But it will be my last and only Tesla.

A Model 3 built today has less features, costs more, and performs worse than my 2018 Model 3.

The Autopilot/FSD nonsense has soured me off the Tesla brand.

I will admit though, that the competition, even today is lacking compared to my 2018 Model 3, but I'm hoping Rivian pulls through and WV has got some nice stuff coming as well. I'm in no hurry though, I think my current EV can easily last another 5-10 years, so I'm optimistic.

adoxyz··on BBC – Elon Musk among experts urging a halt to AI training
Musk just mad that he got rejected by OpenAI.
adoxyz··on Amazon starts flagging frequently returned products that you maybe shouldn’t buy
Yeah with Amazon you'll get in 2-3 days, but you'll end up paying 2-3x as well. I considered building a browser extension that just lists the Alibaba/AliExpress item for you when you land on amazon listing and did a bit of research. Most things you search for on Amazon these days that crowd the first page results are literally just copies of AliExpress items at 2-3x the markup. Sometimes the convenience is worth it.
adoxyz··on Ask HN: Using OpenAI with your products. What's your strategy?
We are a couple of content creators and one of the things we always get hung up on is reusing and repurposing content.

We built Video Tap to convert our video content into high quality blog posts. We used to do this manually with transcripts, but it was still taking up a lot of time and energy, and video content alone doesn't really translate well with written content.

Thanks to OpenAI we're able to get almost publish ready blog posts in minutes.

https://videotapit.com if you'd like to try it.

adoxyz··on SEC charges crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun and his companies for fraud
To protect the wealthy.

Pay a small fine that represents a tiny portion of your ill-gotten gains and move on without any repercussions.

adoxyz··on Google releases Bard to a limited number of users in the US and UK
Oh man, Bard is bad compared to GPT4. Like soooooo bad.
adoxyz··on Can AI-Generated Text Be Reliably Detected?
In my experience, no. But it's highly dependent on the prompt and the subject matter.

Especially with GPT4 and the right prompt.

adoxyz··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
The craze from 2019-2022 where "Learn to code" was parroted by everyone everywhere had to end somewhere.
adoxyz··on Silicon Valley Bank unmasks the hypocrisy of libertarian tech bros
Won't the remaining banks just pass on those extra costs onto the customers anyway? So at the end of the day, "the people" will end up paying for the bail-outs, just with a few extra steps.
adoxyz··on Docker is sunsetting Free Team organizations [pdf]

adoxyz··on Twitter was down
Hardcore engineering at work.
adoxyz··on Elon Musk overstated Tesla’s autopilot and self-driving tech, new lawsuit says
To add to that:

6. Promising that every car has all the hardware needed for FSD in 2016. Then promising to update hardware as needed to achieve FSD. And then in 2023, saying we can't upgrade hardware anymore as it's too expensive. Anyone that has current FSD Beta knows that this thing will never be fully autonomous.

7. Tesla legal team stating to CA regulators that FSD is a Level 2 system and even when fully realized will remain a level 2 system.

8. The 2016 video stating that the driver is only there for legal purposes, overselling the capabilities, and then Tesla fans calling out frustrated consumers for being confused and assuming that the car can actually drive itself safely.

9. Continuously moving the goal post. FSD has been a year away since 2016 and every single year Elon has publicly stated "I'm confident we'll see it next year." At what point is enough, enough?

adoxyz··on Future Fords could repossess themselves and drive away if you miss payments
Why wait 10 years, when you've got ChatGPT.

Verse 1: I bought a brand new truck, shiny and so smart It had all the latest gadgets, it was a work of art But I got behind on payments, my bills just piled high And one day I woke up, to a big surprise

Chorus: My smart truck repossessed itself, it had a mind of its own It drove away into the sunset, left me all alone I should have paid my bills on time, kept up with the loan But now my smart truck's gone, and I'm all alone

Verse 2: I searched high and low, for my smart truck so true But it was nowhere to be found, no matter what I do It had GPS and sensors, it knew just where to go Back to the dealership, where it could be sold

Chorus: My smart truck repossessed itself, it had a mind of its own It drove away into the sunset, left me all alone I should have paid my bills on time, kept up with the loan But now my smart truck's gone, and I'm all alone

Bridge: I guess I learned my lesson, to pay my debts on time But it still hurts so bad, to see my truck's tail lights shine I'll never forget the day, my smart truck drove away And I'll always regret, the price I had to pay

Chorus: My smart truck repossessed itself, it had a mind of its own It drove away into the sunset, left me all alone I should have paid my bills on time, kept up with the loan But now my smart truck's gone, and I'm all alone

Outro: So if you're thinking of buying, a smart truck of your own Make sure you pay your bills on time, and keep up with the loan Or you might end up like me, with a broken heart and soul Watching your smart truck drive away, leaving you alone.

adoxyz··on Eggspensive
I don't think it's specific to walmart, I've noticed that prices in supermarkets (Target, Walmart, etc.) located in lower priced neighborhoods tend to be lower than those in higher priced neighborhoods. The same item, same brand, same everything, but price difference can be from 10-30% different, sometimes more.
adoxyz··on World’s largest four-day work week trial finds few are going back
Four day work week sounds amazing. I doubt we'll see massive adoption anytime soon, but having that extra day every week really gives you time to enjoy life rather than just running around doing chores, preparing for the week to start again. Maybe someday!
adoxyz··on Amazon employees push CEO Andy Jassy to drop return-to-office mandate
I guess it depends on the circumstances. Like if they were told they could go full remote, and the employee moved out of state and settled down somewhere where there is no office, now to be told j/k get back in here, seems like a case could be made.
adoxyz··on Amazon Announces RTO for Employees
Remote work, when done correctly can be amazing. Most employers I've been with the last 6 years have been remote first and my personal experience has been very positive. My team, even those not in the same timezone, had a pretty good overlap on working hours. Communication via Slack/Zoom/Meet was near instantaneous. We got together once or twice a year at an offsite.

I also think it depends on the type of work you do, your team, and personal discipline. Not everyone is suited for remote work. So I hate blanket statements of "WFH is the future" or "WFH is the worst thing ever."

Remote work requires trust from management, but also personal discipline from remote employees. Some absolutely abuse it. Some companies are just not setup for remote work. And some jobs, even if possible remotely, aren't well suited for it.

But yes I agree with your last point, guidance is necessary on how to work remotely.

adoxyz··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
I'm in Las Vegas. The roads are wide, the weather is clear, traffic is low. FSD Beta should work great here. But alas.
adoxyz··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
You can believe whatever you want. The reality is that FSD Beta is unsafe and makes the dumbest decisions. Every update I give it a try to see if anything has improved, and usually within the first 30 seconds, I end up turning it off.

Autopilot on Freeways works ok for the most part though.

adoxyz··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
The Tesla tech is not ready and is deployed haphazardly. Google and other companies are approaching self-driving in a much safer way while still having tremendous progress.
adoxyz··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
I still can't believe FSD Beta was allowed on public roads. I've had it since day 1, and oh my god. It behaves worse than a drunk teenager. All the updates since, have made it barely better. This needs to be pulled entirely and rethought.
adoxyz··on Airbnb nightly rates shot up 36% in 3 years
$300/night is more than most hotels charge with a lot of amenities and service. If you don't want to pay the handyman charges to reset the router, you can go and do it yourself for free. You're paying for convenience of not having to do it yourself and that cuts into profit.
adoxyz··on Does Google need a new CEO?
From personal experience, Google search on a desktop w/ Adblock is great. And especially when you know what you're searching for, the experience is usually great.

On mobile or without adblock though or when trying to do discovery of something new, you really have to sift through pretty much the first 5-7 results as they're all sponsored, ads, or terrible SEO spam.

But it is a hard problem to solve, and no other search engine is better in that regard imo.

adoxyz··on Does Google need a new CEO?
I don't know if Google needs a new CEO, but from everything I've heard about internal Google, they need to change up how they measure success and who they reward. So many awesome products launched with tremendous hype, left alone to stagnate, and then unceremoniously shut down. At this point, I can't get excited when Google announces something, no matter how amazing it seems.
adoxyz··on American Dream For Rent: Investors elbow out individual home buyers
You bought at the current peak. (and even still, very likely, though not 100% guaranteed, you'll be ahead in 5-10 years) Real estate is a long term play to come out on top. If you bought a house 20 years ago, you're sitting on a hefty profit right now. Maybe not generational wealth, but def 3-4X your original investment. And if you had the funds to purchase multiple properties between 2009-2011, you could very easily be sitting on enough wealth to comfortably retire and never work a day in your life again. Which is what was happening around that time. I remember trying to buy my first starter home and getting outbid for over a year straight by investors and all-cash buyers.
adoxyz··on Ask HN: Do you celebrate failures at work?
There's a huge difference between innovating and embracing failure.
