I love to understand how things work.

adonese··on Saudi Arabia puts 81 to death in its largest mass execution
It really depends on ones interpretation, and that definitely shouldn't be derived by a monarch.

Islam used to have a very solid legal system but it has not developed past the late Khilafa ages.

One you have a religious manuscript, and submissive population, you can pull off whatever shit you want and you can always find an obscure religious passage to support your claim. MBS is such a disgrace for all humanity, not just Islam, and I dare wish to see Hijaz is outside the control of Aal-Saaud.

adonese··on Sudan’s first YC-backed startup helps consumers protect and grow their wealth
I'm really super excited to see the first Sudanese company backed by YC. The electronic payment landscape in Sudan is very promising with ease regulations and wide range of banks to pick from (we have 38 bank in Sudan!)

I wish more Sudanese companies get featured on techcrunch

adonese··on Flutter is the most popular cross-platform mobile SDK
Another go developer here, also worked with flutter / dart. Dart felt to me like a simpler Java.
adonese··on Fifty percent of Facebook Messenger’s total voice traffic comes from Cambodia
One thing I really hate about whatsapp voice notes is that they give a seen indicator for the sender. My privacy settings disable all of seen and is currently active features and I'd really love if the voice notes would just respect that.
adonese··on Fifty percent of Facebook Messenger’s total voice traffic comes from Cambodia
That's super impressive, and extremely useful!
adonese··on Windows 11 available on October 5
Windows 11 (the insider builds) are very buggy. I'm usijg w11 on two machines: MSI with 7th generation CPU, and Lenovo Thinkpad e14 with 10th generation CPU and they both have serious issues. The MSI have an audio driver issue where I have this noise from the speakers coming in constantly and the only way is to disable the audio driver. Thinkpad issue is even more annoying. Thinkpad won't shutdown or even sleep. It always auto reboots! And it's very annoying! I would have to fully drain the battery for the laptop to shutdown and I know that will be very disastrous on the laptop.
adonese··on GraalVM at Facebook
> Even if that were the case, use the CE or collocate or self host.

Or, as the op suggested, their pricing is just straight up insane

adonese··on Ask HN: How to cope with the death of a dear person?
I lost my grandpa the last year during the lockdown and the corona. I could not meet him, I could not be there just to say farewell. That analogy you described might be the best way as to how we bear the loss of our loved ones, the pain is always there, we just get used to it and feel less often.

But grief also teaches us to be kind and look after each other's. It is also helps a lot to connect with your lost one's friends and acquaintances! Our memories are scattered across the ones we know.

adonese··on I found my Grandpa’s notes 20 years after he died (2020)
Yes please! It would very interested to read it all. Also sorry for what your grandpa had to go through. Stories like these never fail to remind me how -mostly- lucky and privileged we are to live in such peaceful times.
adonese··on Gisgraphy – open-source geocoder based on open data
I was literally one hour ago talking to my previous professor and supervisor regarding a reverse geocoding solution that targets local consumers!
adonese··on The most effective malaria vaccine yet discovered
I grow up in Africa too, Sudan to be specific. During my early childhood years, I contracted malaria more than 5 times. It was really a very regular disease -- that an typhoid. It was only during college have I learned how devastating and seriously dangerous those diseases are: just to put things in perspective, a doctor once told my friend, after he checked his lab results (and be mused of it), they either have malaria or typhoid.

I'm interested to read more about the possibilities that in africa we contracted so many diseases that explains the rather shocking covid mortality rate. It could be because of mean age too.

adonese··on Gradle 7.0
I'm neither a java dev nor Android dev, but our android guy left the team and I had to maintain our android app.

Gradle is really a huge burden for me to get the app up and running and for someone who was only lightly interested into doing small changes one the fly, gradle was totally upsetting.

I think it kinda fits into tools that suit much large scale projects, while they fall short to address small scale projects.

adonese··on Figma and Canva are taking on Adobe and winning
>The point most are missing is that, $600/annum maynot be a big deal for a company, but it is a huge deal for an individual designer.

I seriously thought that the rather easy way to crack Adobe and Autodesk softwares was to lure in indie designers and engineers such that it becomes their go-to tool in their professional jobs.

adonese··on Ask HN: Cheapest/easiest way to host a static site?
I use vercel (or previously zeit). The free plan suits my use cases:

- tls

- github integration (although limited to personal accounts only and NOT org -- which is nutsz but I understand the rationale)

- it also comes with cloud functions, and routing which could be very powerful

I think cloudflare pages with workers offer the same set of features PLUS team and github org integration, but so far I like what vercel is offering

adonese··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
I only used to do fasting (islam), but I tried intermittent fasting this year.

I can not stress enough how an empty stomach can contribute to overall mindfulness! It sure sucks at first, but IF just clicked with me and I want to adopt it

adonese··on WhatsApp CEO on the controversy surrounding proposed German communications laws
In my country, lots of younger folks (college students), use telegram as oppose of whatsapp. Telegram is used widely for studying groups and other features (also piracy). Whatsapp is still the dominant in business though
adonese··on Google isn’t happy with Microsoft over online news
I think op might be referring to online learning [1].

adonese··on Ask HN: What websites do you visit every day?
EVERY DAY? :D
adonese··on Ask HN: What is in your pocket everyday?
Phone in the left pocket, cash in the shirts pocket. Nothing else really!
adonese··on Facebook buying ads for Messenger to be top result when you search for 'Signal'
This actually reminds me of Tim Sweeney's tweets regarding stores policies[1].

adonese··on Telegram Voice Chats
>I type a message on my phone - I see it on my PC the moment I press Send button

I use some telegram groups and sometimes i'd start typing in phone before the message gets too long and i'd prefer to carry on the message in my laptop instead. It is so useful to have this feature.

adonese··on SQLite as a Document Database
Simon Willison has good posts on implementing full text search on top of sqlite[1]

adonese··on Diego Maradona has died
Some would argue pele only played in south america, it's still hard to skip the three world cups though.

But it seems football is getting more difficult and more mechanic over time, that is why I consider messi as a glitch

adonese··on How much is YouTube worth today?
I feel like youtube will be better off with facebook than with google. Also, facebook is already putting effort into their Videos.

I noticed external youtube links no longer get viewed inside facebook, it's probably another step to make their users (facebook) prefer Facebook's videos than youtube

adonese··on macOS unable to open any non-Apple application
You still can run the same program checked by windows though, by opting in to use the program. And definitely you still run other programs as the check only occurs on installation, and not every time after running it.
adonese··on Python overtakes Java to become the second-most popular programming language
Golang?
adonese··on Bing is now Microsoft Bing as the search engine gets a rebrand
Google constantly suggests you to use chrome
adonese··on Luna – Cloud gaming service
I was actually thinking about the same with respect to training machine learning models; but I think they might have something in terms and conditions prohibiting that
adonese··on Chrome Web Store payments deprecation
Inbox should have met that metric. I think it is a culture thing, it's far more easier to deprecate any product than to keep supporting it
adonese··on Swift for TensorFlow – A system for deep learning and differentiable computing
Is this (future of tf is in swift) still the case? Because there have been speculation esp. when lattner left google. Also projects like Jax has gained good momentum.

I guess it's really hard to convince scientist to move away off of their python legacy. And python scientific stack is really incredible.
