adocomplete··on AI Coding assistants provide little value because a programmer's job is to think
I disagree. It's all about how you're using them. AI coding assistants make it easy to translate thought to code. So much boilerplate can be given to the assistant to write out while you focus on system design, architecture, etc, and then just guide the AI system to generate the code for you.
adocomplete··on YouTube Premium Lite: Ad-Free Viewing for $7.99/Month
Yeah. Honestly, I don't think I watched a music video in like 15+ years so this is a welcome change for me.
adocomplete··on YouTube Premium Lite: Ad-Free Viewing for $7.99/Month
In the comparison matrix between Premium and Lite it says Music and Music Videos Ad Free for premium, while Lite doesn't have that checkbox so it looks like it's just music videos that'll have ads.

Nice. Def switching over to this, as I've been paying for YouTube Premium but don't use YouTube Music at all (have Apple One Sub and find Apple Music to be way better).
adocomplete··on 'Hey Number 17 '
I don't think the issue is necessarily the tool, but rather the execution. I think everybody can agree that improving efficiency is a good thing, and tools to track/improve it are a net benefit, but the way they approached it was abhorrent.

But seriously, who approved posting that (before it was deleted)?

adocomplete··on 23andMe changed its terms of service to prevent hacked customers from suing
Thanks for sharing. Will def opt out and roll into the class action suits already filed.

Take security seriously people. Especially when dealing with super sensitive data.

adocomplete··on Ask HN: Why haven't we seen a race to the bottom in SaaS pricing?
I question the "making money hand over fist" notion. Aren't the vast majority of SaaS companies burning VC money to stay afloat?

Like others have also said, trust plays a key role. Companies usually like to stick with a tool that already works and where they know what they're going to get vs taking a risk on a copy-cat to save a few bucks.

adocomplete··on Fear of cheap Chinese EVs spurs automaker dash for affordable cars
Would you feel safe driving around in a 1200lb vehicle when most others cars on the road are 4000lb+. I love the idea of smaller vehicles, but big fear is safety of a smaller vehicle vs the monstrosities on the road today.
adocomplete··on Show HN: VideoGist – Useful YouTube video summaries
Very cool. We have something similar at https://videotap.com, although a bit more focused on repurposing your video content into other mediums (written blogs, twitter threads, etc.)
adocomplete··on Danish pension fund to sell its Tesla shares over union dispute
I think their current valuation is held up by the promise of FSD. If it comes to fruition, it would be huge, but (as a beta fsd user) I don't think they will ever deliver on their promise, and as soon as they admit that I expect the stock price to come back to reality.
adocomplete··on GitHub: Can no longer search code without being logged in
This is pretty disappointing on GH's part. They seem to be moving further and further away from things that made the platform great.

https://sourcegraph.com/search has a really powerful code search can be a pretty powerful alternative and allows you to search codebases without logging in and across different code hosts.

adocomplete··on Bad bots account for most internet traffic? Analysis
I think it's possible if for nothing else but the fact that a bot can easily do 10-100x or more visits than a human can on the web.
adocomplete··on Clarity Design System
Are we still doing design systems?
adocomplete··on Ask HN: Do you find GPT's browsing useful?
I don't find it very useful personally.
adocomplete··on Levels of AGI: Operationalizing Progress on the Path to AGI
Really interesting. It is similar to how we at Sourcegraph are thinking about the levels of code AI.

adocomplete··on Supreme Court of the United States Statement Regarding the Code of Conduct [pdf]
Means nothing if not enforced.
adocomplete··on [dead]
Personally, I don't get it. It seems like a portable Google Home or Echo device, except that it'll confidently lie to you because it's using an LLM.

Why would I get this if I already have a phone, or heck even a smart watch?

adocomplete··on Tech layoffs: Google, Amazon, Snap and Zillow announce new job cuts
I think that saying way pre-dates even the existence of Twitter, but the point stands.
adocomplete··on US Smartphone Shipments Decline 19% in Q3 2023 as More Americans Delay Upgrade
Since 2019 I've done an upgrade every 2 years, and even that is becoming hard to justify. Not from a financial perspective, but from a technology/innovation perspective. Recently I upgraded from an iPhone 13 Pro Max to an iPhone 15 Pro Max. The day to day difference is almost indistinguishable. Dynamic Island is cool I guess and USB-C is great. But for 99% of my day to day use, the 13 would have worked just fine.
adocomplete··on Shein reportedly seeks $90B valuation in IPO
Shorting this one as soon as possible.

adocomplete··on Why did Twitter (X)'s valuation tank 56% in one year?
Elon driving people away with his antics.
adocomplete··on Apple unveils M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max
Oh I'm super happy with it - it has handled everything I've thrown at it and then some and I'm not planning on upgrading anytime soon. But I feel like with the M2 Pro's having such a short shelf life, what that means for long term support.
adocomplete··on Apple unveils M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max
I purchased a fully maxed out M2 Max MacBook Pro when it was announced like 6 months ago. I knew it was going to be outdated eventually, but within 6 months, wow. Did not expect that.
adocomplete··on Apple TV Plus is getting a price hike – and other Apple subscriptions are, too
I'm probably out. I have the $32/mo Apple Family sub, but with literally every service going up 20-30% over the last year, I just don't see the point. I used to spend about $60-80/mo on various streaming services, now it's closer to $150 and content quality has not improved, if anything it's significantly worsened.
adocomplete··on V0: Generative UI
I've had access for a bit and it's a pretty neat tool to experiment with but not much beyond that.

I actually tried to recreate the functionality with Cody [cody.dev] in VS Code and it actually worked pretty similarly minus the GUI, but I found it a little less restrictive and I could specify the CSS framework.

adocomplete··on Matter 1.2 – New device types and improvements
It does, but it is pretty bad. Loads very slowly. Randomly disconnects. Just overall a janky experience.
adocomplete··on Matter 1.2 – New device types and improvements
Step in the right direction, but I wonder what's taking so long on getting support for cameras. That's my biggest use case at the moment. Having a bunch of Nest cameras that don't natively incorporate with HomeKit and having to do all sorts of work arounds to get a still generally crappy experience is killing my excitement for the smart home. And I won't buy new ones until they support Matter and there is true interoperability.
adocomplete··on LocalPilot: Open-source GitHub Copilot on your MacBook
Awesome! Would love to hear about your experience trying it now and seeing if we're doing any better for your use-case. :)
