adingus··on Armstrong's 'poetic' slip on Moon (2009)
Yes it was. Thankfully there are people smarter than these "researchers" who just simply asked the guy what he'd meant.
adingus··on Ask HN: What is something important I should start doing in my 20s?
As someone who can only deadlift moderate weight (405lbs) I can tell this advice is almost completely wrong for anyone except maybe a record level lifter. This sounds like someone from the 1950s saying muscular people are "muscle-bound" and can't be flexible.
adingus··on Drunken-Driving Warning Systems Would Be Required for New Cars Under U.S. Bill
You can donate money to a cause you believe in and then deduct it from your taxes.
adingus··on In software, when an engineer exits the team
My company held an all hands and when someone asked about the salary based attrition this is basically what the response was. And I believe it. It certainly seems like the company is geared toward attracting mediocre talent for mediocre pay and letting them slide by for 40 years. The company inevitably comes out ahead when inflation eats away your salary.
adingus··on Ask HN: How do you think about promotion?
I have pretty much stopped thinking about promotions within the same team. IMO you need much more work to change peoples perception of your level than you do to just interview and talk your way into an opening at that level. This is after working at companies that will tell you a promotion is coming until the cows come home. It never materializes until you have another offer.
adingus··on Ask HN: What's the best Linux distro for fullstack development?
Ubuntu is good because its popular, which means its well supported and you'll find instructions to get just about anything running. Ubuntu is based on Debian, so just about any Debian based distro will benefit from those docs. Fedora is great too and also just werkz.
adingus··on Amazon CEO unveils 55k tech jobs in his first hiring push
I wonder how Amazon's poor reputation as an employer is going to effect this hiring push. I would take one of those 55,000 jobs for a FAANG salary but only if I was sure Amazon wasn't going to chew me up and spit me out.
adingus··on Ask HN: I am 34 years old refugee how Can I find a job
When I read these comments I get the feeling you're not actually open to suggestions and less inclined to offer any help. Your situation might be tough but everyone here is offering their advice free of charge so it would help to stay open minded.
adingus··on Online Trolls Just Assholes All the Time, Study Finds
Trolling is a art
adingus··on The Fierce Legal Battle at the Heart of the Fight over Reclining Airline Seats
Using your car horn in that manner is illegal in most places, as it should be. Shouldn't you be more upset with the airline for designing and selling a product that is almost unusable because of how uncomfortable it is?

Are you entitled to deny another person their comfort and use of a service they have paid for? I don't understand this argument because it goes both ways. The airline is the only entity to blame.

adingus··on Ask HN: Has anyone moved from data science to web dev? What was your experience?
I would love to learn more about this as well. I am working in data science and would like to switch to a backend web dev position. I work tangentially to back end devs and it seems like one of the biggest differences on the DS side is nobody knows anything about software development fundamentals. It's much harder to get good at these things when you need to learn them without knowledgeable team mates to challenge your ideas and not rubber stamp a PR.
adingus··on [dead]
It's tough for me to put into words how disgraceful it feels to be an American when I think about the war in the middle east. 20 years and thousands of young Americans dead, tens of thousands more wounded and immeasurable damage inflicted on the region, and for what? What were my friends' blown off legs, missing testicles and PTSD traded for? What a fucking disgusting mess that we should all be ashamed of.
adingus··on For programmers, remote working is becoming the norm
You wont look like a fool. I'm pretty sure most of my coworkers WFH setup consists of their laptop and a mouse.
adingus··on Back to Linux
I have a 3700x and 5700xt. I built the machine December 2019 and the hardware has performed perfectly on fedora since at least release 30.
adingus··on Ask HN: What is your strategy for not being manipulated/pushover at workplace?
I have a fat emergency fund and live below my means. This gives me the confidence to be sure I can find another job if required.
adingus··on Spotify Apps Suck
I was a youtube/google play music subscriber for years who recently switched to spotify and I think the same about the opposite! When I moved to spotify I thought the recommendations were better. Now reading your experience I think that maybe they aren't better, just different.

Youtube music is really a shame. It was a big step back from google play music. Sorting liked albums & songs is difficult. If you like a video on youtube that happens to be music, it will always show up in your liked songs in youtube music. Having such crappy streaming options just makes me want to go back to pirating.

adingus··on Ask HN: Single-factor authentication via email – good idea or not?
Freecodecamp does this. As a user I like the feature for the same reasons you stated.
adingus··on Ask HN: Advice on Finding Manufacturers?
After working with lots of different sized suppliers in the aerospace industry, the quality of your product really depends on your suppliers' culture. If they take it seriously, are willing to work with you and already ship good stuff you will have much better outcomes vs the opposite. Your best bet is to meet and talk with them a lot. Can you your their facility? To turn around a company that ships trash, you may have to acquire them... and not even that is a guarantee.

Beyond that it really depends on what you're manufacturing, and what you can spend. Look into PPAP (Product Part Approval Process) and take ideas from there. It is the process automotive manufacturers follow and will soon become an aerospace standard.

adingus··on New Model M Is an American-Made Keyboard That Puts a Spring Back in Your Typing
On the contrary, I think the issues you state are overblown. I have been using a 1989 mfg IBM model M for close to 10 years now and haven't noticed any of the problems you point out. No problems with fit & finish or longevity... I use the keyboard for gaming (fps mostly) and coding and have never had a problems with KRO.

I haven't been impressed with the few other types of mechanical keyboards I've used (which I admit is not many). The key presses just don't feel as authoritative as the model m and the model m does feel like a tank.

The only knock I can give the model m is the lack of modifier keys and remapping. I use a soarers converter to remedy these problems.

That said, would I buy a unicomp repop, or a model m at current prices? No, probably not.

adingus··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
Old houses in New England were built with internal chimneys for the same reason (less heat loss).

Houses in southern states were built with external chimneys which made sense for a couple reasons. Back in the day people would keep a fire 24/7 for cooking and that fire + southern heat is uncomfortable. Because of the shorter cold season the chimney was on the outside of the house. Also, in the case of chimney fires you could tie a chain around an external chimney and rip it down with a horse, hopefully saving your home.

adingus··on Mastodon is crumbling – and it will only get worse
I don't understand why we have to "challenge our world views and grow as a person" when it comes to social media. What if I want to just join a server to talk about old cars, or gardening or some other hobby in a casual fashion? I don't always want to see or hear about social issues or politic... and that goes for issues I agree and disagree with.
adingus··on Food Grammar: Unspoken rules of cuisine
Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing it doesn't belong in a fruit salad. - unknown
adingus··on Ask HN: How do you find a business idea and motivation to leave the 9-5 grind
Is there anything you enjoy doing that you could eventually be paid for? I would say that spending that morning time developing the skill that is fun for you could be a good use of your time.
adingus··on Ask HN: Where else do you go for tech news/discussion?
Very gross and not an exaggeration at all. A good portion of the stories aren't even tech related and submitted by username "hitler_was_right"
adingus··on Ask HN: Which camera do you own? Do you like it?
I have a Pentax ME Super and agree. I develop my C41 film and scan with an epson V550. Scans look OK but lab scans look a lot nicer and are cleaner. I'm debating whether to upgrade the scanner or just send all my film to a lab.

If you've always shot C41, try out slide film. Its harder to expose correctly but looks great.

adingus··on Cincinnati is home to the largest unused subway system in the world (2016)
Not one picture of the subway tunnels or platforms... disappointing.
adingus··on Ask HN: What YouTube channels do you subscribe to?
Townsend's (Living history focused on 18th century American living & cooking): https://youtube.com/user/jastownsendandson
adingus··on The Toyota Production System (2013)
This may be the end game of JIT. But Deming and Shingo would have defined quality as "meeting the customers needs" and having them wait for parts does not accomplish that. Don't let the theoretical get in the way of the practical.
adingus··on The Toyota Production System (2013)
This is my experience as well at a large aerospace manufacturer. When push comes to shove nobody wants to stop the line or take the extra time to actually do anything management preaches. TPS is cargo-culted like mad.
adingus··on The Toyota Production System (2013)
JIT doesn't mean you should carry no inventory or wait for orders. You should carry enough stock that you sell out of just in time for the replenishment to arrive.
