adingus··on Amazon doubling down on return to office
If the culture is so special then why do people not want to go back?
adingus··on Lost in the Stock
I guess this is just a case of me being annoyed because of my own ignorance. I wasn't aware that 'frame' was a common term, like carcass.
adingus··on Lost in the Stock
If I had to summarize what I thought of this article in one sentence I'd grab this quote:

""Raw material (chicken frames) are cooked in water to specific solids content,” the representative wrote.”

The the product, the rep and the company are so disconnected from reality that they can't even call a chicken bone a "chicken bone". They call it a "chicken frame", like some strange chicken nugget defecating robot.

adingus··on Tell HN: Confluent laying off 8% of staff
The optimistic things management says about a company are as empty as a paupers purse. Theyll tell you there are no layoffs planned the moment before they sign your severance package.
adingus··on Spotify reducing employee base by about 6%
Another one I love is "right sizing". A phrase I have only ever heard when companies lay off.
adingus··on ‘Luddite’ Teens
I've never had a job that requires or has even asked about social media. You don't need a smartphone to keep a LinkedIn account or Instagram. You can simply log in when you're at home on a desktop or laptop.
adingus··on ‘Luddite’ Teens
They're kids. They're nearly innocent. It's their parents people should be sick of.
adingus··on ‘Luddite’ Teens
I don't get the 'classist' argument at all. You don't need to be rich to want to stop doomscrolling, or to put your phone down for an hour. It sounds more like the kids who call it 'classist' understand phone addiction but don't want to face the fact its actually bad for them... like when an overweight person says 'Id rather enjoy life than eat that salad, I bet that in-shape person is a bore to be around!"
adingus··on Starlink Maritime
Interesting. I didn't know that coverage was limited. I assumed satellite == pretty much all of earth.
adingus··on Starlink Maritime
"$5,000/mo with a one-time hardware cost of $10,000 for two high performance terminals."

wow! Why cant you just take your normal starlink with you on your boat? Don't people do that with RVs?

adingus··on Covid-19 vaccine doses, once in high demand, now thrown away
What stops someone from going somewhere and just pretending they're unvaccinated and getting a shot? I was under the impression that a booster was just another dose.
adingus··on Increased Subscription Pricing for IDEs, .NET Tools, and the All Products Pack
Pycharm's debugger is great but I cancelled my sub after trying out emacs & neovim for a while. I realized I didn't miss the rest of the IDE at all.
adingus··on The age of the fast self-checkout lane is over
If you use their app you can scan everything with your phone too. The just use tap to pay to complete the transaction. IMO it's a great innovation.
adingus··on Ask HN: How do I get my Google account back?
Buying new hardware might be slightly over the top but it's essentially my experience with losing a Gmail account. The hijacker was extremely fast trying to get into my Amazon, PayPal, bank, credit card accounts and trying to steal my identity. The whole situation was awful.

I was stupid and used poor security which made it easier for this person (who was also probably using data from the Equifax leak for social engineering). But I wouldn't fault someone for erring on the side of paranoia.

adingus··on Ask HN: How to Create a Simple Blog?
Anything based on a static website generator is my go-to. It offers a lot of control but its really quick and easy to get up and running. I like Hugo. I built a blog in django but I found it more trouble than it was worth, at least as a blog back end. I spent more time building and tweaking the thing than writing. Now I deploy with hugo and don't do any tweaking or writing.
adingus··on Ask HN: Taking Time Off?
is it career suicide to take 3-6 months or more off of “official” work?

no

adingus··on Ask HN: How to pull off a successful career switch?
The job I was doing was all quality assurance engineering and management so I wasn't actually "making" anything unfortunately. I have played around with CNC machines & lathes and they're quite fun so if you're interested in that then give it a go!
adingus··on Ask HN: How to pull off a successful career switch?
At 26 I made the switch from manufacturing management to coding. I started practicing and just trying to apply my new skills everywhere I could within the job I had, even when using old approaches would have been better. I slowly moved in the direction of coding and now I am a full time dev. There's the cliche phrase "when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail". Well I say just pick up the hammer and whack things and you eventually find the nail.
adingus··on A few things to know before stealing my 914
The VW EFI actually works really well when it works! Late 70s VW buses and bugs are some of the nicest to drive around in because of the EFI.
adingus··on The worst part of working from home is now haunting reopened offices
Because that's where it happened
adingus··on Ask HN: Is switching from VSCode to Vim worth it?
Its definitely worth learning vim, which you can do plenty well with the VScode vim plugin. Its probably not worth moving unless you have some real issues with your workflow or you're bored and want to learn something new.

Im trying to move completely to Lunarvim, a vim config with a lot of neat tools built in, but only because I fell in love with the keybinds and I don't want to spend the time configuring vscode or pycharm to do the same. That said, I still swap to pycharm or vscode for the debugger.

adingus··on This Day in History: FDR orders Japanese Americans into internment camps
How do you define an "action that cannot be washed away no matter how many other good deeds you may have done"? Because I don't think anyone will ever be able to dispute you unless people can agree on a definition.
adingus··on Ask HN: How do you cope with realizing you mostly wasted your potential?
My bad OP, I was being too harsh. I feel the same way at times I think everyone does). But I always feel better starting than procrastinating.
adingus··on Ask HN: How do you cope with realizing you mostly wasted your potential?
If you were so smart and gifted then why did you sit on your butt for so long? Maybe there was no potential to waste. But the best time to start is now, or else you might die wondering what you could have done.
adingus··on Spinal implants allow paralysed people to walk, swim and cycle again
I'm sure folks who get this treatment will be willing to stick to activities less strenuous than an intense CrossFit workout.
adingus··on There Is a Much Larger Problem Than the Great Resignation
What an angry, bad faith reply this is.
adingus··on Google Kills YouTube Originals
I have been an Android user since the iPhone 3g and I have never considered moving back or to something else until Android 12. More and more it feel like Android is getting in the way. The app drawer/recent app swipe up is annoying and confusing, I can't do simple things like setting a timer via text unless the assistant is turned on, the driving mode is trash etc. I am really thinking of buying a pinephone pro and trying my hand at that.
adingus··on Ask HN: What's your Linux window manager and/or desktop environment?
I have been running either sway or i3 (both tiling window managers) for the last couple years. I used KDE for a couple years before that. One day I tried a tiling WM plugin for KDE and decided to give it a shot and learn it how it worked. Using the KDE plugin preserved the ability to float windows and do everything the way I had in the past if I couldn't figure out how tiling worked. It was a nice easy transition and I'm really glad I gave it a chance! I quickly grew to love the ability to use all my screen space efficiently and the organization of workspaces.

The lightweight footprint that something like sway or i3 gives is really nice too. Now I like to start with a fedora minimal install, install sway & just pick and choose all the applications I want to use. It really feels like my OS stays out of the way and is just the way I want it. If/when I reinstall I just backup my .config folder.... everything is back to how I like it once restored. Very easy.

adingus··on Twitter’s new CEO announces major reorganization
You can get paid for something without degrading its function.
adingus··on Ask HN: How has exercise changed your outlook on life?
I taught myself to code with the lessons I learned from weightlifting. I knew that all I had to do was put the reps in and trust the process. Even when I had bad days or felt like I didn't want to practice I knew that I'd be better for just showing up and writing a few lines of something.
