adinb··on The case for declaring armed and fully autonomous drone swarms as WMD
I think that you have to focus on whether you have a human in the loop and can the human reliably interrupt an automated kill chain before there is a release of ordinance (much less fuzing)

If there's any point that a human cannot 'abort', then it needs to be classified as a WMD.

Out of human control I view swarm UCAVs as an unrecallable remote shotgun for the same reason as the article author, it's "inherently indiscriminate".

But why should I learn it over the zillion other things that I'm trying to learn? Especially since I have only so much time for non-practical skills.
adinb··on A Sudden Illness (2003)
I'm not sure exactly which point you're shooting for, my point is more about the provable altered metabolomics discovered over the past year and a half by Dr. Ian Lipkin, et al. Example paper from this summer:: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-28477-9

Try adaptive pacing instead of GET, you’ll get much better results. Read Tom Kindlon, et al’s work on debunking GET. I can provide links, to papers etc if anyone wants them.

Side note: I have had ME/CFS since 2003, (partially bed bound and mostly housebound, raising 3 kids with my wife who now is also diagnosed) when it knocked me out of my USAF Reservist and my systems engineering careers. I helped admin PhoenixRising.me (a charity & forums for ME/CFS patients and allies) for many years.

If anyone has any questions about ME/CFS (aka SEIDs) or coping with it, feel free to ask.

Edit: Please follow and read some Jen Brea’s work on twitter: https://twitter.com/jenbrea/ and please try to watch (Sundance award winning!) “unrest” by @jenbrea .

Actually, it was a 8192 processor MasPar at the University of Central Florida that did the image correction for the Hubble Telescope before corrective lenses were installed.

The MasPars were fun to play with. ;) So you're not that far off on your XBox comment!

adinb··on The Svbtle Promise
It almost sounds like a type of insurance company. While the actuarial tables would be horrible on startups, the cost of keeping relatively small amounts of data alive could be easily spread across lots of startups.

Besides, you wouldn't have to buy the servers until the startup died.

I wonder if this would work as an add on for a backup company? Calling @backblaze!

adinb··on Sony launches universal remote control with e-ink screen
This is probably my biggest problem with the Harmony remotes—since there's no feedback, the state management gets out of sync. Which usually means drilling into the menus to get it back into sync or getting into the troubleshooting wizard and answering a bunch of yes/no questions.

After 3 different Harmony remotes this is really what killed it for me.

It seems like you guys are proceeding down the directories path to solve this issue-is there any reason that semantic tagging wasn't considered? It would appear to be a good fit and might solve the nesting issue, but I could have totally missed some conflicting requirements. (I admit I was flipping through the issue thread fairly quickly)
adinb··on Bacterial cells are small 'eyeballs', scientists discover
If we can figure out some way to capture and transmit what these (and possibly other bacterial species see), we could have trillions of little cameras everywhere, possibly changing everything from medicine (deliver medical payload based of off visual information or image tumor directly without surgery) to biology (pseudo xenobiology studying the underwater volcanic mats of bacteria and algae) to even intelligence gathering (need to spy? Grow some bacteria in an air vent or other convenient area).

I hope that someone is starting to try and capture images from those mini eyeballs, they then become our mini bio-cameras.

That's how I understood it as well; maybe I'm missing something?

I'd love to see a web-native supported version of Access or File maker that was fully open source and had modern programming languages fully baked in.

Same thing in Rio Rancho, NM (just north of Albuquerque, NM) by the western edge of the mesa. Interesting areas back there to explore.
adinb··on China Turns to the Sea for Fresh Water
How crazy would it be to (Mostly to help the American Southwest, though if it worked, it could be used anywhere that uses river basins as a major source of freshwater for extremely large areas) create a large pipeline to feed an inland desal plant that's located along the shortest, lowest, least populated path to the headwaters of multiple major freshwater sources, like the Colorado and Rio Grande and the pump desal water into the existing water distribution network?

While it's a major geoengineering project (musk-scale!), it would allow for usage of current legal and physical water distribution to be reused.

Also, while CA desal cites briny outflow disposal as a major impediment to desal, why not pump the outflow to existing salt flats?

(Edited for clarity)

adinb··on Astrophysicists propose new twist on Big Bang
From the fine paper[1]:

Finally, let us comment on potential testability of this model. As we pointed out, the simple model of cosmological perturbations, developed in Sec. 4 is already ruled out by cosmo- logical observations at > 5σ level, as it does not predict any deviations from scale-invariance. However, it is easy to imagine small corrections that could lead to a ∼ 4% deviation from scale-invariance, especially given that bulk temperature is so close (i.e. ∼ 20% of) the 5D Planck temperature. In the context of our model, the red tilt of the cosmological power spectrum implies that the amplitude of 5D bulk graviton propagator, which enters in Eq. (4.8), is getting stronger in the IR, suggesting gradual unfreezing of additional polarizations of graviton.
