addingnumbers··on Odd DNS Requests that are Normal (2019)
It's been a couple years since I plugged in my Amazon Alexa, but at the time it rocketed three domains to the top of my frequently resolved list: example.com, example.net, and example.org each dwarfed the 4th most frequent request and cumulatively they were more than half my queries.

Sixty times per hour it resolved all three and sent http requests to all three.

I assume it was a simple connectivity check, but using those three domains was worse than redundant, it was gratuitous. They all resolve to the same IP address, same NS record, and connect to the same service on the same server. The only scenario I can conceive of that would cause the second or third test to differ from the first is if the IANA borked one of their registrar records.

Anyway I got the thing to read me a book during LASIK recovery and unplugged it within a week after the third time it piped up out of nowhere. (Nothing like waking up during a deep sleep in a quiet house to a blaring "SORRY, I DIDN'T QUITE CATCH THAT.") Maybe someone who didn't have that problem can let us know if the device is still doing this.

addingnumbers··on Blocklist of all Facebook domains (2016)
With pfsense and pfblocker-ng you can just plug in facebook's BGP AS number, it can look up all the subnets in that ASN and block those.

AS32934 has 379 subnets with 144k addresses and seems to cover every Facebook property from WhatsApp to Instagram to meta.com. It's guaranteed to be consistently updated since they have to announce a subnet for it to be routable.

I've been doing this a couple years now. The only noticeable side effect for my browsing habits is a tasteful void where fluffy news sites are trying to embed instagram posts.

> Pantera turned $1.7 million into around $170 million. The recent crash was “unfortunate,” Mr. Veradittakit said. “A lot of retail investors have lost money. I’m sure a lot of institutional investors have, too.”

"A lot of people lost a lot of money they couldn't afford to lose. Look, here it is, we've got most of it right here."

addingnumbers··on Pirate Site Blocking Is Making Its Way into Free Trade Agreements
It will be effective for the pirates who would give up and make a purchase before spending a solid 20 minutes searching for a piracy site. Counter-piracy measures only make sense when they are less expensive than the lost revenue, so their goal is not necessarily to eliminate all piracy.

I'd guess there are Pareto-like distributions where 4/5 of the infringers are low effort and not part of any invite-only communities.

Beside that, the language used is "online location," a pairing of words so vague and incompatible that it's hard to argue it should be limited to web servers and not discord channels.

addingnumbers··on No Dislikes has officially ruined YouTube for me
> it's not marked as deprecated/removed

It's not marked as deprecated or removed because dislikes were never deprecated or removed, nor implied to be.

They made it private (readable only to the uploader) and marked it as private.

A plug-in using this API will only tell you the dislike count for your own videos.

addingnumbers··on Twitter miscounted its daily users for three years straight
> You must know that Twitter already knows about your alt accounts right?

As the article says, the whole miscalculation comes from Twitter counting all your alts as active even when you were only using one of them...

addingnumbers··on Append Reddit – Chrome extension that redoes searches with Reddit appended
Reddit is big on cargo-cult troubleshooting, you can't show them a TCP windowing problem or path MTU detection failure without "try changing your DNS servers" or "disable auto-negotiate on your Ethernet port" getting a hundred upvotes.
addingnumbers··on The SymPy/HackerRank DMCA Incident
That's the whole point, to get them to reform the law, or to set courtroom precedent against spurious claims, while they're forced to take the position of its victims instead of continuing to side with the more well-funded perpetrators.
addingnumbers··on French fighter jet joy ride goes très, très wrong (2020)
"Beat feet" has been a widespread English idiom for retreat since the 1940's, still to this day published in print thousands of times every year.
addingnumbers··on Beanstalk cryptocurrency loses $182M of reserves in flash ‘attack’
What fraud? This was a proper and orderly transaction... fraud requires deception. If there's any fraud here, it's on the part of anyone who claimed this wouldn't inevitably happen according to the rules they concocted.
addingnumbers··on We lost 54k GitHub stars
> I don't know what else GitHub could do to prevent this.

The article describes exactly what else they could do, including example screenshots from another app that does it.

I think the point is getting rid of this risk:

If you're going to sell gasoline in downtown Manhattan, why rent a little filling station when you could just build a whole refinery there?

It's not half important enough to me to justify buying more equipment.

Especially when there is no technological barrier that keeps us from having software do it automatically. I'm not going to buy gear to do something I fully expect the software to be capable of in the next year or two.

Until then, searching paper with my eyeballs once in a great while is less work than procuring and maintaining a document feeder or pressing a button three thousand times, no matter how convenient that button is.

addingnumbers··on Today Google is turning on tracking for many users that previously turned it off
It's so trivial that it's pointless because the intended reader is presumed to have already done it himself, excising that triviality is the purpose of any kind of shorthand.

Does it still require you to press a button to tell it every single time it's pointed at a new sheet of paper?

I'm waiting for one of these apps to monitor a video stream from a camera and automatically determine when a new sheet is ready to scan.

I already have a mobile app that can find the edges of the paper, crop it, and OCR all its contents. But it still needs me there as a human to tell it "the page you're pointed at now is one you haven't seen before" when that determination should be far simpler than doing OCR.

I'm waiting for the day I can aim my phone or webcam and just flip through a bunch of pages and have it scan each one as it appears. It doesn't have to be super fast like Data from TNG or Johnny Five from short circuit, I just want to go from "flip, press, flip, press, flip, press" to "flip, flip, flip"

They are fictional archetypes of established historical patterns, their reason to exist in pop culture is as shorthand allegories and extrapolations for common despotic behaviors that are already clear to everyone with a sense of history.

Vanity and the prospect of social media clout?

You must have stopped at Season 1, season 2 started with all those bodies found in the first episode.
addingnumbers··on How to properly interpret a traceroute or mtr
I had a similar problem with my ISP gateway giving spurious readings on a traceroute, to prevent other techs from getting distracted by it I started using `mtr --first-ttl=3 ...` to ignore the first two hops.

addingnumbers··on Tell HN: Reddit accounts cancellation/suspension caused by VPN usage
Reddit like to claim some lofty, detached sense of free speech as if the sexualization of minors was something that happened without their influence.

One thing they don't want to talk about these days is how they minted a one-of-a-kind profile trophy called "Pimp Daddy" to commend u/violentacrez for his sustained and voluminous work on maintaining the "jailbait" subreddit, plastering Reddit with bawdy pictures of high school girls he scraped from social media.

It wasn't until Anderson Cooper did a piece on the practice that the whitewashing began, with sudden claims of disinterest in the matter for the sake of free speech.

addingnumbers··on Ask HN: Is Gmail spam out of control for everyone else too?
Yes, right this minute the most recent three messages in my Gmail inbox are extremely obvious spam with titles like "YourCVSrewards HavejustArrived" and one is full of white-on-white text, which I thought was an easy giveaway for their detection systems.
