adatavizguy··on Cloud kitchens – commercial facilities built to produce food for delivery
I've working in restaurants for 11 years in San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Portland, OR. They only touched on the biggest benefit which is being able to negotiate the lowest prices for wholesale food items. If they have single dish washing facility and butcher on site, they will do even better. This is a great idea because most people have no clue how to run a restaurant even though they might be a good cook.

That is a good motivation to practice Zen mindfulness meditation.

adatavizguy··on Duolingo becomes first VC-funded $1B Pittsburgh tech startup
I saw Luis von Ahn speak at the at the LAB in Miami circa 2013. His goal has always been to crowd source translating text like the New York Times everyday into several languages. Professional translators probably translate text better than Duolingo, but not at the price point they offer. One thing he brought up in that talk is that they hired a bunch of respected academics in the field of language learning. He asked them which parts of speech should be taught first which the consultants didn't have an answer so they implemented A/B testing to see which order of words and concepts people learned fastest with. Several years later the thing that surprises me is that with data backed learning they haven't got further. Working through he courses isn't such a bad waste of time for most of the users even though there might be better more expensive ways to learn a language.

How would someone do that using node.js? Asking for a friend.

adatavizguy··on How Discord achieves native iOS performance with React Native
I use react native svg with low level d3.js utils to produce data visualizations with a utility class that holds all the animation values across components and screens which is sort of a hack but very clean for animating several pseudo svg components.

For me it isn't about look and feel so much as being able to quickly manage massive amounts of data for interaction and data viz. I use the ramda lenses, sagas, redux, and selector stack to manage state of the data. It is clean and quick to develop. Everything is memoized with selectors only changing if the reference to the object it is using on the state tree changes.

Nobody can work data the way I can with React. It makes sense.

I earn six figures specializing in Javascript and data visualizations with d3.js -- no college education at all. It's my third career. The formula is quite simple, learn a skill that is in demand and demonstrate I can do that skill.

Can you do me a favor? If not for yourself simply do it for a random guy on the internet. Can you walk at least 15 minutes a day if you are not already? Work up to 1 hour a day. It's fine if you walk slowly. You don't have to run. You don't have to do push ups. Just walk. You'll feel better about everything in about a week.

I walk everyday. I prefer a pair of 1461 Doc Martin over my $170 Asics.

It is toilet paper manufactured by Georgia Pacific a subsidiary of Koch Industries. I don't have a car because I can work from home so I mostly walk or bike keeping healthy although doing it for environmental reasons. I also boycott refined sugar in protest against mismanagement of sugar cane production runoff in Florida. Nobody cares about that either, however, I've lost a ton of weight since and my dentist says that my teeth are perfectly healthy, so there is that.

I chuckled thinking about how much coding I've learned in interviews. Early on in my career I messed up on SQL joins and the interviewer walked me through my mistake before excusing me.

adatavizguy··on War and drugs: Together since forever
Considering Benjamin Franklin in other writings has shown a much more enlightened view of Indians, this passage you quoted might have been written with sarcasm and this is an earlier example of Poe's law. This passage has more to do with the virtue of temperance and rum than indians. This passage is more like objectively talking about how the CIA worked to help import cocaine in the United States in the 80s and how African American communities like Harlem were being destroyed because of the crack epidemic because of these policies of the government.

This passage edited for 2019 internet should read.

'The next day, sensible they had misbehav’d in giving us that disturbance, they sent three of their old counselors to make their apology. The orator acknowledg’d the fault, but laid it upon the rum; and then endeavoured to excuse the rum by saying, ”The Great Spirit, who made all things, made everything for some use, and whatever use he design’d anything for, that use it should always be put to. Now, when he made rum, he said, ‘Let this be for the Indians to get drunk with,’ and it must be so.“

And, indeed, if it be the design of Providence to extirpate these savages in order to make room for cultivators of the earth, it seems not improbable that rum may be the appointed means. It has already annihilated all the tribes who formerly inhabited the sea-coast.' /s

adatavizguy··on US Navy will replace touchscreen with mechanical controls on its destroyers
> The whole splitting of throttle/steering controls seems a bit odd to me however. I can't imagine a situation where I was at the helm and didn't want the throttle at my command as well.

We lost electricity on our yacht at sea. There are electronic controls for both steering and throttle at the helm but none of them worked for a time. Because the yacht had two screws and the manual throttle control was in the engine room, we were able to steer and navigate the yacht with a man in the engine room with a radio. Traditionally throttle is the responsibility for engineering because there is a lot more going on with a ship than a car throttle.
