adamrights··on Right to Repair: Message to Steve Wozniak from Louis Rothman
a little long winded, but very interesting if Wozniak responds...and wow, referendum difficulty in NY :/ would be interesting if we had a digital ranking site for bubbling up referendums without such lobbying costs.
adamrights··on KeyDB: A Multithreaded Redis Fork
That codebase really has exceptional organization/comments.
adamrights··on Google.com Ranks Slow Using New Google PSI Speed Rank
Thanks, really appreciate that. I posted on https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pagespeed-insights-d... ... Don't want to be too spammy, but can do the same.
adamrights··on Google.com Ranks Slow Using New Google PSI Speed Rank
I agree, the old tool had many issues, and I think for the "synthetic" portion, moving over to Lighthouse (used in the browser, headless chrome) makes sense.

But, the sudden move from basing ranks off median vs to the 90th percentile, needs to be considered. (Or at least some function on outliers should be applied perhaps weighted by pageHits).

From my initial querying of CRuX and using the tool directly — it tends to punish highly trafficked sites, making it seem like they are "slower"...when they are often highly optimized.

The tool encourages posting questions on stack overflow, so hoping to get a little traction and encourage an answer.
adamrights··on WSJ Articles just started redirecting to HTTPS
https://www.wsj.com/asia is up as well. There's a few kinks we're still working out on the article page that is breaking the green lock.

adamrights··on Ring Doorbell Vulnerability Exposes Wifi Password
Seems like if they send the people a new device in the mail it would be more valuable to see if the camera and other components were salvageable -- then I could see people stealing them for pieces :/

adamrights··on Mortality in People with ADHD [pdf]
Yes, impulsive, creative, wild, dangerous, bored people doing riskier things have 2x mortality. There's a lot of things that'll increase it a lot more -- like different geolocations.
adamrights··on Deep Belief Networks at Heart of NASA Image Classification
I stopped reading when I hit this sentence: But armed with two of these, and a new slant on deep belief networks, they are breathing new life into an established deep learning knowledge base and proving how a new model for deep learning is proving itself at scale for NASA’s terabytes of near-range satellite data—and potentially for other areas as the work expands.
adamrights··on OnHub
The 13 antennas and form factor is kind of cool, but after that I'd rather install OpenWrt and if going for home automation, my own server.

Wonder how rootable Google will leave it.

adamrights··on Ask HN: Can we detect the NSA's pause collecting data?
That's a smart angle it could fall under FOIAble data, anyone have credit at https://www.muckrock.com/?
adamrights··on Ask HN: Can we detect the NSA's pause collecting data?
Well it doesn't take much to think: keep the servers running, assume the House version will eventually pass and it can be used to back justify during this little gap period.

adamrights··on The 33-year-old virgin: Life without sex is only torturous if you let it be
I find it hard to believe a "stand-up comic, writer and director from Astoria, NY" that "hangs out" in the night scene has not met friends that will sleep with him just for the sake of giving him some experience -- out of philo-love motivation, because having spent a fair bit of time in the area, there are quite a few people who would feel sleeping with a friend in this need is just the right thing to do.
adamrights··on How the NSA Plans to Infect “Millions” of Computers with Malware
When I was in middle/highschool -- late 90's-03 -- using a mix of home-made tools, scripts I tweaked, some trojans I hex edited to make work for me...I had almost all of my schools home computers logging into an IRC room where I could use them to DoS attack and easily knock off (especially before few had broadband) anyone -- all my infected IRC clients could also upload, often around firewall/virus protection varying degrees of other trojans that let me print on their computers, watch them on webcams, open their cd-roms... I was young, told most people and really didn't abuse it: and finally learned 'hackers make things, crackers break things' -- but the point is: yes this isn't a surprise, and in many cases the sophistication is not even too deep, but ya like many said: we need this to keep being published so the open community as a whole can understand, and circumvent if need be.
adamrights··on Can We Avoid a Surveillance State Dystopia?
That's why the importance of removing bad laws off the books, and reforming what we consider essential liberties is so important.

Yes, the observation state is coming as many have said, but how we apply it, and who has the power of checks is the the real question.

If every on foot police officer has a camera on their lapel that any citizen can log in to and monitor, if much of the technology behind the monitoring is transparent -- if the people ultimately control the monitoring and its usage is to detect weapons, explosives and true acts of terror...not petty things like teenagers with pot -- then I believe the coming 'monitored state' will not be as scary.

So the removal of bad laws. Maximum liberty in the privacy of one's house, and then crazy cameras and detectors for explosives and the printed guns et al is where I hope/believe the future can head too.

Call it the green tea party ;p

EDIT: In my world every printed gun, hell every gun taken out of the household needs to be transmitting its location so I can log on to a 'like google maps/latitude' type app and see exactly where any weapons in the public space are...and anyone caught by the monitors or an officer without 'reporting' on their weapons would face the severest of consequences.

On the counter side though, within the house hold, you can print and make whatever you want. You can do the vices you'd like, and you can petition for areas within the public space to do such things, as long as I can also see where it is taking place and avoid if I desire too.

adamrights··on Lord British launches “Shroud of the Avatar” on Kickstarter
I played Quantum on Atlantic and Heroku and later helped run parts of the Dr.Twister network :). Short of WoTMUD early UO is the best pk system I've ever experienced. I still talk of game memories with my brother and my friend Jason that played Sir Alf.

I don't think the felucca 'carebear' world helped the game. Yes, there were some issues with griefing -- but the playerbase was in control (I admit I'd polymorph into a slime around coveous, flag myself gray, and have people attack me to freely pk them).

When Sir Alf and I used to raid this RP heavy village, and we became a nuisance -- they hired guards...real players -- to keep us at bay. Eventually they befriended us and paid us in regents and offered protection.

We once betrayed a friend in-game and the father called us -- I learned peer mediation from UO :)

I got my first case of the shakes.

I wish LB the best in this venture

adamrights··on Steal These Freelance Business Ideas
good convo, data, metrics
adamrights··on People Track Health Stats
Makes me think we need some open sourced US government sponsored apps to make things easy and standardized -- it's the type of data that is both sensitive and yet has great public importance.
adamrights··on The Conscience of a Hacker
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html ... what sticks with me most from this: crackers break things and hackers make things.
adamrights··on How To Crash A Party
I found his characterization of the people getting paid to check tickets -- "I'm scared of Mr. Rich person" -- a bit naive.
adamrights··on Introducing Chrome for Android
Firefox for android unfortunately started out real slow...might be a good move for Google. Time to go to xda-developers and see if it'll be on your phone.
