adamdusty··on Ask HN: How does your company handle late running projects?
All the projects where I work are late so we've just learned to communicate with upper management about prioritization of work time.
adamdusty··on Cppfront, Herb Sutter's proposal for a new C++ syntax
I see what he's going for, with the function signature separated from the identifier, it might improve readability. My initial reaction is I don't love it, but it's not that bad.
adamdusty··on The sooner we accept RCS is dead, the sooner we can choose the next platform
That seems extreme for what amounts to playful banter, but it doesn't matter either way. My point was that Apple has a huge advantage in that people look down on the competition, so why would they even consider working to close the gap?
adamdusty··on The sooner we accept RCS is dead, the sooner we can choose the next platform
Why would they? In the US at least, there is pressure at a social level to have an iPhone. My friend group clowns me on a regular basis for having an android and my green bubbles. What other business has that kind of pressure on anyone, especially teens and young adults?
adamdusty··on How to Learn Modern Rust
I think so? Modern c++ (c++11) came 13 years after c++98. Rust has been released for close to or longer than that depending on your definition of released.
adamdusty··on A Review of the Odin Programming Language
Rust community harassment? Must have missed when rust developers harassed the maintainer of actix so bad he quit and temporarily deleted the project repo.

adamdusty··on Evolving my note-taking processes
Sounds doable with logseq. Everything is pages rather than tags, but a similar concept. Any block/note can be a part of any number of pages/tags via hashtags or page links.
adamdusty··on Zig, the Small Language
Doesn't that entirely defeat the purpose of having the compiler not allow unused variables.
adamdusty··on What If Obesity Is Nobody’s Fault?
Sure your body could put itself into a coma and conserve all possible energy, and it would still be physically impossible for it to store energy you did not consume.

Your body will never go under such heavy energy conservation that you cannot lose weight, and it doesn't have enough control to do that anyway. At best your body can attempt to slow down your physical activity and slow down digestion for efficiency. Yes as you diet your metabolic rate will decrease, and even if it were to decrease an impossible amount like 50+% you would still be able lose weight by comsuming less energy.

adamdusty··on Zig, the Small Language
It is optional in nim
adamdusty··on What If Obesity Is Nobody’s Fault?
Your brain may subconsciously adjust your activity as a result of dieting, but that doesn't change the fact that it is physically impossible for your body to store energy you didn't consume.
adamdusty··on Is Tesla Autopilot Killing Motorcycle Riders?
I'm not arguing that it's to game the stats, but it's still an interesting point I didn't know. I wonder what the reasoning behind the shut off is, and why 1 second (or whatever it is). Why not 2 or 3, or a quarter second?
adamdusty··on Is Tesla Autopilot Killing Motorcycle Riders?
He glosses over the part where tesla autopilot shuts itself down just before impact. It doesnt matter that much but it's an interesting point I didn't know.

As a rider, I'm not really too worried about tesla autopilot, mostly because I don't do much freeway riding and I'm probably not the safest rider to begin with. Plus there are plenty of normal drivers that make questionable maneuvers solely because they don't see bikes. In fact, even as a rider myself, at night I often have trouble distinguishing a motorcycle from a car with one light out.

adamdusty··on Rewriting my blog in Rust for fun and profit
I don't think I made any criticisms of rust. I just pointed out it clearly has the most evangelical communit, a point which I think you helped support. I didn't even mention GP or his criticism.

None of those languages had as many rewrites as rust (which is a testament to how good the language actually is) nor did they have the same eventually obnoxious meme.

And yes, I am making sweeping generalizations about the community based on a couple of incidents. Incidents that have never happened in any other language communities I've participated in. Didn't official rust moderation team essentially quit relaticely recently because some business with the core team? I don't really care about the details. Rust is too smart for me, but I like using it anyway. I'm happy to stay separate from the community around it though.

adamdusty··on GitHub is removing the Trending Repositories page
I check this page daily and have found many interesting projects and even learned languages because I was interested in a project I found on the trending page. Ultimately it doesn't affect me much, but I'll be sad when it's gone.
adamdusty··on Rewriting my blog in Rust for fun and profit
While his vocabulary might be a inflammatory, it's hard to argue that any language has an evangelistic community anywhere near the level of rust's. No other community is pushes their favorite language for every single use case. No other language has a rewrite it in rust meme. No other language attacks people for unsafe code.
adamdusty··on Why aren't there C conferences? (2018)
But tech also has conferences on specific languages. Seems like a JS, C#, C++, Java, python, etc. conference could be analogous to hand tools for carpentry.
adamdusty··on The Next Mainstream Programming Language: A Game Developer’s Perspective (2005) [pdf]
Why not just enforce it in release configuration?
adamdusty··on How to pay your rent with your open source project (2020)
Again, what gives OSI the authority to define that vocabulary over anybody else? If you want to use "open source as defined by the OSI" more power to you but I suspect most people will continue to use "open source" as "I can find the source code online".
adamdusty··on Rust – A hard decision pays off
There are package managers and build systems. MS ships a build system with visual studio and msvc and they have a fairly capable package manager in vcpkg.

I like cargo better than any c++ tooling but those tools don't really make a ton of sense for c++ where every platform has a different compiler.

Ultimately, I agree. I don't think I'll be going back to c++ any time soon, but for me it's more about the tooling fragmentation than the tooling itself. I actually like the language itself.

adamdusty··on How to pay your rent with your open source project (2020)
What gives OSI the dictatorial authority to make the final definition of open source?

It doesn't really matter who defines it as what. What matters is what people mean when they say it.

adamdusty··on Ask HN: Are you using .NET to write cross-platform desktop or mobile apps?
I daily drive Linux and I kind of agree with you. The amount of people I know that use Linux, use non-dev apps on their laptop/desktop, and aren't developers are zero (excluding myself obviously). The actual percentage of non-dev native gui tool users on Linux is probably within the noise of the measurable data.
adamdusty··on Ask HN: Are you using .NET to write cross-platform desktop or mobile apps?
There are gui frameworks made by the community as well. Avalonia has picked up steam since it supports Linux and has been around for a while. Documentation is lacking and I can never get it to work the way I want but I suspect that's more my fault than theirs.

Uno is another cross platform C# gui framework. I gave up on C# gui apps before I ever tried it out, but it looks good.

adamdusty··on Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become
I think the author might be missing the point of the book. Nothing on that list anything to do with forming habits. I suppose the mentoring bullet point could be a habit, but it's bit vague.
adamdusty··on Omega-3 fatty acids and exercise: a review of their combined effects (2011) [pdf]
At least it's getting studied. Most fitness supplements are total garbage advertised by equally garbage people trying to make money risking other people's health.

The paper pretty much says fish oil + exercise does not increase performance ("inconclusive") and some evidence for improved fat loss. Many of the studies reviewed by the paper show evidence that heart rate is lower during "submaximal" exertion.

GP links to a list of "certified" fish oil sources, so if you wanted to at minimum test for yourself, you could just pick one from the list before you pursue your fish oil PhD.

adamdusty··on Omega-3 fatty acids and exercise: a review of their combined effects (2011) [pdf]
Do you know anybody with one? I've never heard of WHOOP before. It looks cool, but $30/month for what seems like a fitbit is a bit much for me. I guess the difference is the WHOOP device is included in the subscription.

Id be interested to hear someone's experience with it vs a 'normal' fitness tracker.

adamdusty··on After 50 years, Michael Heizer is finally ready to unveil City, his life's work
Do you donate all your money to building sustainable homes?
adamdusty··on Using the same Arch Linux installation for a decade
As a Linux noob i actually picked arch because it doesn't have an installer. Just installing arch I learned a lot about how computers work and how much is actually done by other operating systems like windows. I just followed the installation article in the wiki and didn't have any issues I couldn't solve. There are plenty of nicer distros for people that just want to use Linux. In my field of work RTFM is pretty standard so I don't mind it in the arch community.
adamdusty··on Microsoft finally admits Xbox One sales were less than half of the PS4
Killer apps for me: Games was HZD and Spiderman. Hardware was rechargeable controller, and the PS4 itself. All my friends' xboxs would get stuck updating and they would have to force restart several times. Nothing like that has happened to me on my PS4.
adamdusty··on Ask HN: Anyone else feels the commoditization of real estate is unethical?
Okay but what's your solution? The reason land is valuable is because many people want it in specific areas. I genuinely don't have an answer to the question.
