adam419··on Ask HN: I'm a Rails dev who wants to learn to comfortably deploy apps to AWS
Someone not long ago on HN went through the same experience and made a nice guide exactly for this.

adam419··on Product Grunt: The worst old products, every day
Very creative, great work. I especially like the downvote as upvote.
adam419··on Free Syrian Army homemade tank uses PlayStation controller in fight against ISIS
Necessity is the mother of invention.
adam419··on Ask HN: What should I learn?
Java/Ruby/JS forget everything else.
adam419··on Most Code Is an Ugly Mess. Here’s How to Make It Beautiful
Good article, surprised they didn't draw a parallel between event-driven programming and git/version control systems.
adam419··on Ask HN: If you're 20 years old, how would you invest $100k?
If long term was your goal, put half in an IRA and have it managed by a mutual fund with a good track record of around %10 a year. That would easily make you a millionaire by 65.
adam419··on Ask HN: Would I be crazy to learn Objective C now?
Curious about this myself. I recently begun learning Objective C past 2-3 week and am curious whether to abandon ship and move over to swift.

However I think that most Objective C learning material is still a good precursor for learning iOS in general and learning the structure of iOS apps.

Looking forward to hearing other answers.

adam419··on Ask HN: How should a software engineer go about making a website?
Ruby + Sinatra
adam419··on The most difficult interview question ever
Exactly. I actually looked forward to those kinds of questions because it really gives an opportunity to demonstrate passion, which I found becomes less and less relevant as the company becomes bigger.
adam419··on The most difficult interview question ever
This is really not that difficult of a question to answer.

If you're coming from a more B2B oriented company and interviewing at a more consumer oriented one, say you're interested in working on consumer oriented products.

Same goes for the reverse.

With a little creativity this is a pretty easy question to answer, just gotta practice your rhetoric before-hand.

adam419··on My first gem – RubyRetriever, a ruby web crawler and file downloader
Looks nice.

There's an error on line 22 in fetchsitemap.rb.

You have a comma in

   self.write(@output,self.sitemap) if @output
which causes a wrong # of args error. Tried to merge the fix.
adam419··on What are your B2B pain points? Developing B2B Startup Weekend ideas
I haven't thought of any yet but I will be attending as well!
adam419··on Ask HN: Best language to learn for a Harvard MBA to prototype his own sites?
Ruby + Sinatra. This doesn't prevent you from having to create the html and css for the webpages themselves, but sinatra is a dead simple server framework for serving up webpages.
adam419··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
where did you find this?
adam419··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
A way to motivate yourself to complete a task (writing a book, losing 10 lbs, etc) by saying I will put up X dollars towards this goal, and if I don't make it, I don't get it back and it gets donated to charity.

The idea is that you need some sort of external consequence in order to really motivate yourself to do things outside of work, school, etc.

What do you guys think?

adam419··on Why investors are pouring millions into crowdfunding
Wonder why investors would pour money into something that would render them useless.....in theory.
adam419··on Larry Ellison Still No. 1, and Doing What He Wants
To serve enough ad impressions to make them closer to billionaires.
adam419··on Ask HN: Why do we fail? We were sure it would work.
I've thought about this myself too. I think it has to do with the fact that when you become convinced of something enough to actually work on it, you depart from the exploratory/learning approach and begin what more closely resembles a waterfall development approach.

That's why I think going the route of doing (or at least testing) the things you may believe won't work is better, because you just simply don't know what you don't know.

I also think a lot of successful companies were like this. They were sort of welcomed and blessed by serendipity.

adam419··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
Every Sunday, and I just posted it 10 minutes ago..
adam419··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
What if you could really motivate yourself to do well on something like the SAT by having your score automatically posted to all your friends on Facebook. This extends generally to the concept of creating public accountability somehow towards your goals.
adam419··on How I Went From Gangster to CEO of SwissCoda
You should feel proud of yourself man. You've defied a lot of odds. Live long and prosper.
adam419··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
How does it translate any legal writing into a simpler form? That sounds like a damn nearly impossible language processing feat.
adam419··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
Couple questions. Have you had any customers? What type of legal docs do you think are best to target?

Are you trying to generate summaries programmatically?

adam419··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
A way to submit any legal document, and for a fee have it returned but explained in plain english.

What do you guys think about this? And what do you think are the most common use cases/legal documents?

adam419··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
koding.com
adam419··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
You can't. Not without banning those responsible for that kind of behavior or severely dis-incentivizing them somehow from coming to the community.

I think more generally, if I understand what you mean correctly, that that is really nothing more than water-cooler talk. Talk meant to be pleasant rather than investigative.

I also think with that said, it's really only a property of small communities because once it reaches a certain size, the amount of substantive things to discuss and hash out doesn't scale with the number of users.

adam419··on Ask HN: How can I get a job in the tech industry out of high school?
Go to meetup.com. Look for events that seem interesting and prioritize ones that are company sponsored or have high profile people attending. Do research on the companies of these people, and go have conversations with them and make it seem like you can provide value to them.
adam419··on Ask HN: How can I get a job in the tech industry out of high school?
I got an internship at a company in Bellevue while I was still in highschool. The key is to attend networking events and meet people in positions to hire you. Come off as impressive, either technically competent or showing interest/knowledge of the company's area of business.

Where around Seattle are you from?

adam419··on Ask HN: How to mock up physical products that don't exist?
Sketchup - Looks exactly like what I was looking for. Seems very powerful and easy to get started with.

Thanks a lot!!
