adam-f··on How to Ramen-ize Dried Pasta and Rice
Is anyone else having cognitive dissonance with the % of ingredients in so-many-grams of water?

Does 1% baking soda and 0.5% salt in 2000 grams of water mean 20 grams of baking soda and 10 grams of salt?

adam-f··on Hyphen Hate? When Amazon went to war against punctuation
Beginner's mistake. "Beginners mistake" can only be used as the start of a sentence as in "Beginners mistake azure for blue."
adam-f··on “Not” Neutrality?
FYI: I'm running a 1920x1200 screen rotated, so with my browser (FF32) as full screen I'm just at the point that the annoying #dd_ajax_float element is shown, but it covers the left edge of the first paragraph.

Being a bit pedantic here, but shouldn't it be specified as a URI, "tel:0000" not a URL-ish "tel://0000" with 0000 as the authority?

I find it ironic that the country harboring Edward Snowden is implementing this policy.

( To be fair, Snowden's complaint was not that America has a surveillance state, but that the NSA was implementing it covertly. )

adam-f··on An Algorithm for Nudity Detection [pdf]
This could only be a very rough first-pass on detection. Bathing suits can be very skimpy without being fully nude.

And social context plays a large role, for instance distinguishing between a fat male's nipples and a small-chested female's nipples would be impossible without analyzing a lot more than skin color.

adam-f··on 95% of climate models agree: the observations must be wrong
IANAS but it never made sense to me that global warming would be linear with amount of CO_2, at some point, I figured 95% of the available IR would be absorbed by the atmosphere and doubling the CO_2 would only get us to, like, 97.5%. Then again, we are experiencing some crazy weather patterns recently.

Other effects of CO_2, like ocean acidification can be seen through both direct chemical measurement and by the observed environmental effects on coral reefs.

adam-f··on Fast-food worker replacement machine
I'm not sure if they can deliver on the custom grind promise. I know that supermarkets have to grind in a specific order: roughly cow, pig, chicken: lower required cooking temperature to higher.

Is every burger going to be well-done?

adam-f··on Protect Yourself From The NSA With WireOver’s (YC W12) Encrypted File Sharing
I'm confused by their claim of hashing and THEN salting authentication codes.

    On the server-side, we don't store the authentication
    code in plaintext. We hash it with PBKDF2 / SHA-256,
    salt it, then store it.
adam-f··on How the Bitcoin protocol actually works
In answer to the question:

"Suppose Bitcoin mining software always explored nonces starting with x = 0, then x = 1, x = 2,\ldots. If this is done by all (or even just a substantial fraction) of Bitcoin miners then it creates a vulnerability."

The reward for mining the block includes the miner's account, so each miner is hashing a unique block.

adam-f··on On programming without malloc
A neat trick (tm) for allocating a linked list: recursively call a function which allocates a node on the stack, hooking them up in the function... call something else and pass the list to it.

at the exit condition (whatever that is), exit the recursion and call something else with your new linked list.

(I used something similar to keep track of scope while recursively evaluating in this toy language I made once.)

adam-f··on 100 Prisoners and a Lamp
This reminds me of a problem I learned in UCSC (and was accused of cheating by the teacher when I figured it out in five minutes).

100 Prisoners are told they will be given white or black hats, but they don't get to see the hat they're wearing, they will be lined up facing the same direction, and they gun-to-the-head, say "black" or "white" and if they guess the color of their hat, they get to live.

They get to speak back to front, i.e., the rearmost prisoner sees all the hats ahead.

One strategy for optimizing the number left is to speak the color of the hat directly in front of you, in which case the prisoner ahead gets to live by repeating that color. This saves 50%, but of course there's a better solution.

adam-f··on My Hardest Bug Ever
I once solved a bug where i=5 didn't execute (single stepping through the assembly also failed to assign the variable), the fix?

    i=5;
    i=5;
    i=5;
    i=5;
and, I believe we it shipped like that.

adam-f··on A Sneak Peek at Eric Schlosser's New Book on Nuclear Weapons
I don't understand why an accidental detonation of a warhead would produce "lethal" fallout. Yet there's comparatively little concern (and rightfully so) over the 2000+ intentional test detonations done around the world so far?

Psha, try pointer-to-member-functions in C++.

adam-f··on Indescribable numbers: The theorem that made me fall in love with math
I had a similar experience working with products of numbers of the form (a+b)/(c+d), and then I showed it to John Conway (lucky me, I had access to the master), who instantly recognized that I had only stumbled across a known realization of GL(2).

Sigh...

Also (hehe): quantum theory, everything is quantized. So as far as I understand physics, indescribable numbers aren't god's numbers, they're actually our own invention.
