acumenical··on Experiencing decreased performance with ChatGPT-4
I don't agree. As someone who has written many jailbreak prompts, the very fact that earlier jailbreak prompts no longer work indicates to me that the integration has changed. The model might be the same, but filtering the input extensively might cause undefined behavior.
acumenical··on Tell HN: Nearly all of Evernote’s remaining staff has been laid off
Am I the only one who just keeps a bunch of Sublime Text tabs open? Obsidian looks pretty good for the tagging functionality though
acumenical··on Tell HN: Nearly all of Evernote’s remaining staff has been laid off
I don't buy it.

To me, the real story is that Evernote sucked for a long time. They never evolved and what worked in 2008 stopped working a while ago. Notion and Obsidian and iCloud ate their lunch, and all apps these days are so well connected that you could even use Slack for reminders and self messages and get most of the note taking functionality that you would ever need.

acumenical··on Ask HN: Why is there no major push towards Android for Servers and Desktops?
I know we love to reinvent the wheel here but come on. Dead simple Linux is too programmable, does too many things, so we have to layer Android on top of it so we can do fewer things and then it's magically okay? This must be a joke.
acumenical··on Can Dell’s 6K monitor beat their 8K monitor?
After experiencing 120Hz it ruined 60Hz monitors for me
acumenical··on A Dutch Village Where Everyone Has Dementia (2014)
After 78 characters on a line... right?
acumenical··on To unlock drink verification can (2013)
I always hoped this meme would make an appearance in an episode of Black Mirror
acumenical··on Goodbye, Ozempic
There's always fasting, calisthenics, and avoiding PUFAs.
acumenical··on Show HN: PFAS.report – Measure the forever chemicals in your blood via Quest
Maybe the heart was in the right place, but yet another test that consumers pay for is not really the solution to the PFAS problem. The solution is holding polluters accountable. Until that happens, the test is simply a luxury that allows you to put distance between you and this worldwide problem.
acumenical··on Plastics are poisoning us
I was with you until the whole sleep away the day bit, then you lost me. It sounds more like a cover for depression or learned helplessness than a desire to do good. If that's how you see things then I question the rest of it.
acumenical··on Plastics are poisoning us
> surprisingly common at 1 in 30,000

You should reevaluate what you consider common. Schizophrenia, a condition you probably rarely witness in every day life, is around 1 in 100. You don't interact with 30,000 people even over the course of a year.

acumenical··on Slim people have a genetic advantage when it comes to maintaining their weight
Or, you know, just stop eating so much. It isn't hard and you can do it for free. Even if you have the genetics of a plant, you are not going to defy the laws of thermodynamics and gain weight while eating below maintenance.

What is more common than genetic abnormalities causing excessive weight gain is eating calories in secret, as well as an extremely inaccurate sense of the caloric content of food.

acumenical··on Tilia – regulation-compliant (but US-only) money transmitter for gaming
Funny how this is posted after the post about Second Life. I'm not entirely sure how it works, but I think Tilia is a sort of money processor for Second Life, which allows users to exchange their virtual currency for real world USD.
acumenical··on Ask HN: Why does HN require tiny baby fingers to operate on a phone?
Skill issue
acumenical··on The real lesson of The Truman Show
> But Truman is not the story’s true everyman. The people who watch The Truman Show are.

I'm by no means a movie buff but I thought this was kind of obvious.

acumenical··on Benzene Exposure Alters Endocrine Activity
Yes, if they want to opt out of society. In most places outside the farm, for a woman not to apply makeup is career and social suicide.
acumenical··on Measuring blood pressure for less than a dollar using a phone
> for-profit health insurance companies all would rather not pay for it

Do you really believe a for-profit company doesn't want profit?

acumenical··on Bay Area woman is on a crusade to prove Yelp reviews can’t be trusted
Good point if the app was independent like Yelp. I envisioned this as a first party product from a more powerful company, which makes the Watch as well, that could then directly integrate the consumer/review data into their Maps app on their Phones and other devices.

Alice from [brand] would then have to find a way to get customers to take off their watches or somehow artificially inflate their happiness scores. Or, funnel naturally happier people to their establishment, similar to lead sourcing.

acumenical··on Bay Area woman is on a crusade to prove Yelp reviews can’t be trusted
In the future, reviews will be automated, thus immunizing them from unsavory practices such as paid reviews. Your GPS-enabled wearable compute device will determine which establishment you patronized and for how long, and biometric data will determine whether you enjoyed your time there. These data will be "anonymized" and aggregated. "90% of [brand] Watch wearers like You experienced heightened happiness scores at this restaurant!" Trust in reviews will have been regained and the world will be a better place.
acumenical··on Serotonin booster leads to increased functional brain connectivity
I wish we stopped treating serotonin as a button that automatically improves mood. It is bullshit. Let's recognize the complexity of neural signaling. Whenever people call serotonin the happiness hormone I want to throw up. Such people would probably never believe that if you inject serotonin, the result is extreme pain at the injection site.
acumenical··on The Reddit blackout will continue
I'm done with reddit anyway. After uninstalling Apollo and shredditing my account (not that I strongly believe in the effectiveness of shreddit, it was more of a gesture toward reddit), I realize that reddit is harmful for me. The bots that manipulate perception, on top of the user-hostile behavior, make me realize one would have to be a fool to continue to use reddit unless it changes drastically.

It does suck to no longer interact with smaller communities but at this point I have to prioritize my own well being first.

acumenical··on Apple: Whistleblower about Working Conditions
Same. I have uncountably many times made statements like "all the data are belong to us", the quote out of context is meaningless and says nothing about ethical handling of data, which rests on informed consent and secure handling, not random quips.
acumenical··on Apple: Whistleblower about Working Conditions
I find it hard to trust her when she seems hellbent on revealing technological secrets then wondering why Apple would want to keep them hidden. Even small businesses keep their leads and trade secrets hidden, why is it suddenly "omerta" when Apple does it?

And that's another thing, why is she trying so hard to paint Apple a certain way? Omerta, so Apple is the mafia now? It reeks of forced meme. It makes sense that this all happened after she got a law degree.
