actuator··on Goodbye to Google Code Jam
For startups I agree, they should definitely customize their interview rather than copying big tech pattern.

The kind of interview you describe is something Stripe also does, but I have seen even this resulting in non objective selection criterias. Like one Stripe employee told me that they prefer if someone uses a map rather than iterating on a list, as it is cleaner. While I agree with the sentiment; I don't think it is a good filter to add in the interview.

actuator··on Goodbye to Google Code Jam
Yes, it does. Just likes it helps in Maths or Physics Olympiad or any other ranked entrance examinations. Patterns are there in most real world problems as well, the more you have tackled before, the easier it is for one to see a pattern.

Just like any sport as well

actuator··on Goodbye to Google Code Jam
The main difference is the audience of both is different.

Leetcode works like this. Company A is asking these 100 questions with this frequency; let me solve these questions so that when I encounter these in the interview I can solve them then. The whole premise of Leetcode is on giving a question bank to what is already being asked. The aim is to clear the base bar a company has set.

actuator··on Goodbye to Google Code Jam
Why is it a joke?

It is like any other sport or Olympiad, it involves solving faster, accurately and potentially of problems you haven't seen before. There is no direct correlation between competitive programming like CodeJam/ICPC and leetcode. They don't target the same audience at all. I couldn't get to the top of these but I do admire people who do, they are some of the absolutely brilliant people I have worked with. I have seen how they employ their rapid understanding, breaking down and debugging skills in real world programming as well.

Coming to this argument about even algo/DS interviews, could you suggest an algorithmic interview replacement, that is not time consuming, is objective, language agnostic and scales well with the size of a company? It is not like these companies are not having past experience, system design interviews. They do have them as well but they cover subset of what all you would want to check.

I would have expected to read more reasonable opinion on HN.

Wrong advice.

If you want to be leveled up fast in a FAANG, you should start in one. I know of 4+ YOE people jumping one level per year, they are an exception but the argument is, it is faster if you are born into the culture, rather than if you adopt it.

actuator··on Facebook confirms it will drop news sharing in Canada under bill C-18
> now the bulk to the people don't click the link to read and instead engage only on their social media platform of choice.

but this is the fundamental issue with the bill, if I am hanging out with my friends IRL and I bring up a news report, the discussion happens between us without them going to the media site. They are confused about what happens when offline behaviour moves online.

As I said if they were really bothered about the users reading the title/subtitle from the news report on the social media site, all they need to do is to stop the bot from crawling and not add OG tags. That way a user just sees a hyperlink. It was mostly media sites who added OG tags willingly so that their content looked good in the feed.

I don't get people who don't understand www make these laws. The concept of linking something is core to the idea of web. It is beautiful and useful and no one should need to pay for adding an hyperlink.

If media publications want others to not get access to the content, they can choose to not add OG tags or just not let the Google or social media bots scrape the information.

actuator··on Facebook confirms it will drop news sharing in Canada under bill C-18
FWIW, social media apps used to pull data using OG tags, media publications are free to not put those tags

Thanks. Will take a look.

> So if the UK invested such that it had 10x the per capita scientists and engineers, let's say 10% of the population vs 1%, then it could compete with a nation of 680 million

With the equal outcome approach taking over universities and sciences being considered the unfashionable stream unlike East Asia, how would you do this?

Even if you are able to, why won't these trained people just leave for US when they realise they are compensated more and taxed less there?

actuator··on Why did 250k Britons die sooner than expected?
A forced 12 hour work day doesn't make people achieve more, but if you have to compete with others whose output is 1.3x of yours by putting in those extra hours, people will do it with efficiency.

> Although a very very highly educated, very very highly compensated, might choose to work longer hours

Yes, like SV companies are able to do but not sure how this will work in UK.

actuator··on Why did 250k Britons die sooner than expected?
That seems like a good counterpoint. Let me read what gives the Dutch that advantage.

Israel has an existential threat next door and the region where they have to exist and their past drives them to have real ingenuity in innovation.

Taiwan and South Korea are modelled after Japan like obedience to authority and way higher tolerance for tough work conditions than a western European nation. Is it realistic to assume that a Brit would work 12 hours in a job?

I am not trying to say UK lacks the talent to do it, it absolutely does have the talent and historical pride to do it, but as a nation it is too distracted and bogged down by social chimeras to be like South Korea/Taiwan.

actuator··on Why did 250k Britons die sooner than expected?
I am not sure how in a totally integrated free market world, a country like UK can compete with US or China. The amount of funding US can put into new areas like green energy and the internal market and capital it offers is something UK can't compete with. This is why UK origin founders are one of the biggest cohort of immigrant unicorn founders in US.

Although, I am not sure where a Brit would move to, if they want to have similar social systems. Most of the EU also seems on the path to decline as well.

Also, unlike say a German or a French expat, a British expat would have little problem moving to US, Canada, Australia or NZ as there is little language or culture barrier, so if those countries do well, why won't a skilled Brit just moved there.

actuator··on Why did 250k Britons die sooner than expected?
Ah, thanks for the insight. That would make sense, I will try to probe around more to see if it is possible to make them more accessible to other media publications as well.

A bit offtopic, but does anyone who has worked with media organisations in the past know, how much an individual developer time is spent in creating an interactive feature report like this? Also, are there publishing tools that allow creation by something like drag and drop in the CMS or is it often custom frontend code?
actuator··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
If we are so fearful of this, and banks are so core to the economy, why not just have government owned banks then, since it seems like government has to subsidize mismanagement.
actuator··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
Oh please, these are just excuses.

If you want to reap the benefits of capitalism, you should also get punishment for not doing the job well. Getting a haircut above the insured amount was the sensible thing here.

actuator··on Microsoft announces new Bing and Edge browser powered by upgraded ChatGPT AI
How do people feel about sites from where this data is coming losing out on revenue?

When Google started showing answers, I remember complaints regarding Google benefiting from the site's data while depriving the site of a visitor. ChatGPT takes it to the next level.

Social media companies had run into issues for showing og tag content from news sites, where news sites complained of loss of revenue. In some jurisdictions they were fundamentally forced to ink deals with news sites for something core to the web, which is hyperlinking stuff. Here, we are going one step ahead by summarising.

While we are appreciating this now, this will become a fundamental issue in future if search engines keep becoming the content platform themselves.

Extremely stupid decision to rename it. Out of all their products only Oculus has overwhelmingly positive brand name, I don't know why they will want to change that. Would make more sense to build stuff around the Oculus name.

I think it is do with company culture. It is an email and docs heavy culture so a lot of collaboration happens on that.

If they were chat heavy like most other organisations seem to be, they would put more effort into building features that others seem to want.

Guardian's reporting always had a very left lean, I am not sure if this is new.
