acomjean··on Tell HN: Bob Cringely has died
Offered to be paid with stock, took the cash. As someone who’s first startup is no long in business, and having cash in hand is appealing..

But yeah..

“well for a short time I was an employee of Apple Computer, employee number 12 and one day I helped move materials out of this garage. At the time Steve Jobs said that the company was short of loot so he offered to pay me in company shares, but I held out for the money - my mother still reminds me of that incident.”

acomjean··on Tell HN: Bob Cringely has died
Sad.

Early employee at Apple who was offered to be paid in stock. He “held out for the cash”.

I really like the triumph of the nerds series. Getting bill Gates, Balmer, Jobs and those IBMers to explain how it all came together and how MS who didn’t have an OS ended up getting one to sell to IBM.

The transcripts are a good

Maker of electronic keyboards, outboard motors, jetskis, motorcycles, pianos, drums and guitars.

acomjean··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
It was very useful for me finding a locksmith and junk remover. But i looked in the local threads.

But I noticed Reddit now showing me an ad for a site that seems to indicate it scrapes Reddit for local contractor reviews..

acomjean··on Show HN: Pac-Bench – How well can models one-shot a Pac-Man game?
I wonder if we need better programming abstractions/ languages that can make programming easier for people.

It seems like a lot of the programming is cookie cutter type stuff (where these ai programs shine) and should be easier.

They can be amazing, but promoting “make a pac man game” seems like an exercise in which model has the best training code that was Pac-Man.

acomjean··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
My neighbor had a EV.

It was always an issue, but he ended up moving to a more surban place. If you drove to work daily and they had charging it wouldn’t be an issue. Rapid charging isn’t that quick.

Though at my old office they started limiting time at the chargers. The city has recently started having public chargers.

One of the selling point of electric is you always start out with a full ish charge.

I’m on my bike on most days I commute. I like it better. Except in the winter where the lack of plowing of these separated bike lanes forced me onto public transit, which I don’t love. My car (2010 element) is gas but I only fill every 3 or so weeks.

acomjean··on Pirating the Pirates
It should be. There are lots of good ideas of modifying copyrights so that its not the automatic 70 year after life of author (or what every it is now).

>unfathomable number of games that were released

One of the problems is that there are too many and hard to find curate to separate the good from the meh.

acomjean··on What makes Lisp difficult to read?
Lisp is why I started using emacs and its parens matching features.
acomjean··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
Also city dwellers with street parking and it’s hard charge, so a pure EV is a bad fit.

Hybrids with their good mileage although complex are a good fit for those.

acomjean··on How did AMD Ryzen get 50% faster in two years?
We seem to be going back to the days when desktop PCs had a little lock hole.

They (in theory) could padlock them so the drives and ram couldn't be stolen?

Maybe behringer will release a similar machine?

Clones of old synths (or synth likes) is such a weird but somehow important business. They’ seem a little shameless but apparent the quality is pretty good and it’s keeping everyone honest.

acomjean··on What Sun got wrong
I remember we where a sunos/ hpux shop. I was working on a compatability layer that allowed our ada to call out to the underlying OS. You figured system V would make them the same, but no.. So many #IFDEFs.. Sun's where our display and console machines. SunOS (it was the early 2000s..) had some weird network quirks (of course the udp multicast bug our group discovered was in HPUX.) HPUX had a really cool real time environment (turn of interupts and away you go... crash? reboot required..)

Being a Unix shop on our project didn't stop them from creating a new timecard system that worked only on windows.... The solution, citirx. It was a difficult time for non x86 / windows machines.

At some point we got SunRays as light terminals. Those were pretty good I must say.

Plus they put the Control key in the right place...

acomjean··on AI and the Destruction of the Creative Commons
So the material trained on has no value, but all other costs associate with ai should be captured by business? I mean we coders released it, and it’s hard to compensate everyone, but the world would be better if some open source projects got funded. They don’t even get a source footnote.

Does anyone trust Ai companies not to eventually spy on you and feed you ads? It’s not like we haven’t seen this playbook before.

>One of the biggest issues I see is that governments still use X as a primary form of communication with the public. We need to push back on this with lawsuits.

This.

I’m in the northeast and I’d love to not have to go search x/facebook etc to find out it’s a snow emergency (which city dept will post this?). My city has a website, use it.

acomjean··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
I used to cross post any Instagram photos to twitter with if this then that. But the platforms have made it harder.

I thought hubspot does that but looking at their website I have no idea what they do..

acomjean··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
Huh. For me it was start nagging aggressively at 90% full, but if I deleted enough it kept the nags at bay for a while.

In some ways the non smart nags are ok with me. We have food ording app in Boston called toast. They decided to get reviews for food orders and time those requests pretty much perfectly after your done eating. It’s weird and somewhat fascinating how they do that.

acomjean··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
I get those. To be fair they're asking for you to pay for some of the storage you are using for free. They have some tools to help clean up, but not enough... They'll keep nagging.

I mean apple music/tv/icloud are always pinging me with "free 3 month subscriptions".

MS is no better with the "lets finish setting up your pc with one drive..." to which the options are [yes/ remind me again later]

I've moved mostly to linux and its refresing.

acomjean··on The Waymo effect: how AI is quietly making research less collaborative
Its snark/stereotype, but there is some truth. But my take, is physics sort of took over a lot of chemistry, biology.. and to them its the answer to all questions, because in the end it just molecules. There is some truth to that but..
acomjean··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
The whole WP engine thing. I think it’s private equity buying a wordpress thing, but things got weird and it starting getting bad press. There was the hijacking of a plugin from them if I recall among other things (checkbox in login saying you weren’t affiliated with Wpengine)

Talking to a few Wordpress consultants they were getting questions from their clients which isn’t good.

Matt has seemed erratic from a casual outside view. If he’s having issues hope he pulls it together. The WP community is pretty good.

acomjean··on Mom Gets 6-Mo Suspended Sentence for Letting 5-Year-Old Walk to the Pond
Honestly it depends on the situation and saddly the common sense of everyone.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and in the neighboring town a child went missing.

Pre internet there was still a lot of worry. We got talked to by my parents who were too busy to change their day to day. Being kids we weren't very concerned (I don't think we thought it could happen to us)

It was a rural/suburban type area (my high-school walk home from the bus was 1 mile). I was given free range, and did a lot of exploring of trails and things unsupervised with my brother and friends. It was probably too far in the other direction with lax supervision. We never ran into big trouble, but cellphoneless us last century, we had to be hard to track. But that was the way things were. Playground games were rough too (I had a dislocated elbow that says maybe too rough sometimes..) but we got through.

acomjean··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
stuff that annoyed me on mac was the "find" feature was useful, but to get to a enclosing folder (what I want), involved searching, clicking something, finding the file again in the display and "enclosing folder" (this might not be exact, I don't have a computer in front of me).

Sharing files with a windows hard drive. My workmate had a seagate that installed an NTFS driver on mac, which saved us a few times. Never had a problem on linux.

Python never seems to work right. Conda, and other stuff, just never worked smoothly with the bioinformatics code we were running. Cluster machines it was easy.

There is a wierd issue that you can't close a macbook and use it with an external monitor without plugging it in. It just sleeps.

Would you like to join iCloud. No really would you like to join iCloud. How about apple music? (To be fair MS is just as bad if not worse about onedrive...)

We had a pythonTK program to print labels from a CSV file. Every MacOS update broke it. We ended up just running it on a windows machine. back up was going command line on mac.

case insensitive file systems.

generally stability..

Its not bad, just seems the OS has gotten worse.

acomjean··on Show HN: Nikon F100 Film Camera Repair Notes
Nice. I have an old Canon manual focus T90 film camera which I loved. Put in the AA batteries (it ran on 4 for camera and motor drive). The display screen in the view finder said "HELP" in its glowing red letters. It said EEE on the top lcd display. I guess the shutter is gone because I left sitting too long. It was kind of a remarkable message from a camera, and I had to double check to be sure.

The old SLRs are always fascinating to me. The little circut boards through out the camera body and the crazy mechanical systems.

acomjean··on Show HN: iPhone app takes simultaneous images from 2 lenses, fuses into 1 photo
It’s weird, because the center of the image will be more detailed, so how are they dealing with the “grid of pixels” that is on the display. Are they doubling up the wide angle.

“Easy-to-understand framing The brackets over the viewfinder indicate the area covered by the more detailed lens. Frame your subject inside them to capture the best detail.“

Reminds me of the old 3d cameras that took two photos at once through 2 lenses (on film)

I didn’t have a pro to help me. But I used Linux a lot on the cloud/cluster. I didn’t want to futz. So I bought a computer with Linux preinstalled. Then I got one for work. Then a desktop from a different vendor.

There is an extra cost associated with it (I’m paying more for the same hardware), but for me totally worth it to have a functioning Linux install on delivery.
