aclelland··on Discord ends deal talks with Microsoft
Yeah, as long as you run the desktop app they'll keep track of what games and apps you have running (even if you disable the app sharing to your friends) which seems like it would be _very_ valuable to most gaming related companies.

Edit: If you want to confirm this you can use their data export feature and check it. One good thing about that tool is that the data is well formatted and easy to parse

aclelland··on Equivalent of 97% of Scotland’s 2020 electricity consumption was from renewables
I've seen this suggested often but I don't think I've ever seen any information about how it'd actually work in practise. Do the car companies actually want to do it, how is the car owner compensated for the battery wear and tear and who'd be in control of the management (government regulators, energy companies, car manufacturers).

Are there any examples of pilot schemes that have used cars in this way?

aclelland··on Equivalent of 97% of Scotland’s 2020 electricity consumption was from renewables
Grid storage is such an interesting topic to me. We are all used to energy storage at a small scale (phone batteries, even electric cars) but the challenges of needing to store such vast amounts of energy seems like an almost impossible task, even the large Tesla battery in AU only seems to be used to help smooth the grid supply. It seems that the Scottish landscape might lend itself to more Hydro but that'll be an uphill fight with locales/environmentalists.

Sometimes I wonder if it would make more sense for individual properties to have their own powerwall type devices to soak up the oversupply during those windy days but in reality the cost of getting one installed is so high that I can't imagine enough people ever doing it, let alone the organization and co-ordination that would be needed from the energy companies.

aclelland··on Facebook is gambling Australia can't do without it. What if we prove them wrong
The article mentions that some AU residents have been able to bypass this ban by linking to tweets of news stories. Has Twitter indicated whether it'll be following the Facebook or Google route? I can only imagine that they will be covered by this regulation too.
aclelland··on RethinkDNS – monitor app activity, block ads and firewall apps on Android
I use DNS66 to as a VPN ad blocker. You can lock the app so that clearing running apps won't shut it down, should work for this app too. Just long press on the running window and a lock option should show up. It works for me and I only ever need to manually start it after rebooting my phone.
aclelland··on Tell HN: A case of negative SEO I caught on my service and how I dealt with it
Are the IPs from the same ARN block? Cloudflare should show you that in the Firewall events page. If they're using IPs from a single VPN/Server company then you might be able to just block the ASN.

You might also be able to find common user agent headers through the CF firewall page and block them based on their UA. That'd not work if their scraper tool was randomizing the UA string but quite a few of them don't

aclelland··on Firefox 85
I always try Firefox every 6 months or so but end up going back to a Chromium based browser after a few days. It's never anything major but for example this issue with the address bar suggesting the root domain instead of the pages I actually visit drives me nuts - https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/a2wz6x/firefox_add...

I'm glad they're continuing to improve the browser, maybe this update will be the one that convinces me to switch!

aclelland··on Decoding the Peloton
This might be the best place to ask. I recently got a Recumbent exercise bike which is compatible with iFit.

Does anyone know any apps which are able to communicate with iFit compatible equipment without needing to use the iFit app? I've got a 1 year free account with them but after that it doesn't really feel like their all offers enough for the monthly cost. Really just looking to log my workouts automatically to save needing to manually add them into something like Google Fit.

aclelland··on With Proton and Steam Play, many Windows games now work on Linux
One of the games I run the infrastructure from had an issue with Proton. It caused issues with the multiplayer parts of the game.

We were forced to disable support for Proton a few months ago. We posted a bug in the Proton GitHub repo and got a great response from the Devs. The issue was resolved in the very next patch and we were able to enable Proton support again.

Other than that issue our players very rarely come to us with Proton specific issues.

aclelland··on How Google obliterated my 4 year old Chrome extension with 24k+ users (2016)
I download regular backups of my Google data from https://takeout.google.com/ it works pretty well. It won't help you keep your email address if Google decide to nuke your account but at least you've still got your emails, photos, etc.
aclelland··on Apple Disabling 'Sign in with Apple' for Epic Games on September 11
It also shows that Apple really don't care about their customers and would rather stick it to Epic than continue to support the people who choose to use their login system.

If Apple wanted to show some goodwill towards the end users who were caught up in this mess they'd continue to allow them to log in or provide a migration path.

I wonder if this will be used against Apple in the future since it's clearly hurting people of they lose access to their game, progress and purchases.

aclelland··on More people are searching for an inbox that protects their privacy
I use DDG on my mobile device now. I switched when Google started showing images in the omnibox as I typed in search terms. I found it useless and distracting but (of course) Google knew better and didn't offer any way to disable it.

Generally I'm pretty happy with DDG results and don't feel the need to switch back to Google. I have seen a lot of scam ads on DDG which I've reported but never received a response to. The new Apple map integration seems to work pretty well even though I'm on Android.

aclelland··on WebBundles are built for content-addressable networks
I think one of the reason larger companies like them is because they may end ad blockers once and for all.

You can read a discussion about some of the issues that it causes here - https://github.com/WICG/webpackage/issues/551 Of course, the Brave browser also have some concerns about it - https://brave.com/webbundles-harmful-to-content-blocking-sec...

aclelland··on EBS Storage Improvements
Will this new storage layer be available for AWS services like RDS and ElasticSearch? I checked the dashboards and the SSD options are still just "General Purpose SSD" or "Provisioned SSD".

My understanding is that these services use EBS under the hood but I guess there is no way to check if the attached storage is using io1 or io2 for now?

aclelland··on Argos to stop printing catalogue after almost 50 years
Ah yeah, the Argos catalogue. I used to walk past their stores on my way to work. You'd see hundreds of them on pallets outside the store for people to take. By the end of each day the pile would always be much smaller as they were pretty popular.

During lockdown here in the UK I've used Argos quite a few times and I've been pretty impressed with their service. I've got same day deliveries on a whole bunch of items which Amazon were going to take 3-4 days to deliver (even on prime).

That and not having to trawl through hundreds of cloned products and not knowing if reviews are legitimate, it was a pretty relaxing process.

aclelland··on Turns out half the internet has a single-point-of-failure called “Cloudflare”
This has been my experience too, CF is just so easy to migrate to and to configure once you're there.

If AWS was able to offer a single click "DDOS protection and CDN" feature with similar pricing and features as Cloudflare then I'd consider it since most of our infrastructure is on AWS but at the moment they don't offer anything nearly as competitive. Just the Cloudfront bandwidth costs alone would dwarf our total infrastructure costs.

aclelland··on Ask HN: How can I quickly trim my AWS bill?
If you can handle some interruption to your work then spot instances are probably going to be the biggest immediate change you can make.

Right now a g4dn.xlarge is $0.526/h on demand but only $0.1578/h as a spot instance.

You might also be eligible for a 10k grant from AWS - https://pages.awscloud.com/GLOBAL-other-LN-accelerated-compu...

aclelland··on Tesla lags auto industry in quality, finds new J.D. Power study
I think it's because 10 years ago, clicking on a PDF would result in your computer loading an external program like Adobe Acrobat, Foxit which would normally be very slow. These days, PDFs will normally load in the browser which is much faster and more convenient.
aclelland··on Adobe to remove Flash Player from web site after December 2020
I'm still confused by the statement 'Flash-based content will be blocked from running in Adobe Flash Player after the EOL Date.' are they literally going to stop the flash player loading SWF files on the 1st of January?
aclelland··on Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chrome 85 address bar
To enable the old behaviour you need to edit a browser flag. I don't know of any of the flags that disable Google 'engagement' features which have been kept around over the long term. The flags I've had to set in the past have all been removed after a few months.

Two recent examples off the top of my head are the recommended stories on the new tab page and the ability to disable images appearing in the omnibox.

aclelland··on Nitrome to convert its Flash game library to HTML5
I've been looking into how to best make a large collection of flash games available after flash is removed from browsers. An electron app was looking promising but that plan has been scuppered by licensing issues with the Flash runtime. Adobe have told us they'll be removing flash installers from their site and the cost to embed Flash into the app itself makes it a no go.

Maybe before December there will be a good HTML5 converter but I'm not holding out much hope. Shame to see so much content disappear.

Glad to see that Nitrome have had the resources to port their games over and some content is being saved!

aclelland··on NHS open-sources contract tracing iOS and Android apps
As someone from the UK, I'm really appreciative of all of the people who are actively looking into the app and highlighting privacy, security and other concerns.

My main concern with all of the contact tracing apps is that I live near a very busy road, hundreds of people per day walk past my house and they're going to be about 3 meters away from my phone, albeit through a brick wall and a 6' hedge. My concern is that the apps will pick up the random passers by and I'll be forced to isolate my family based on a false detection.

Maybe this isn't an issue and these apps will have protection against this sort of false positive. I've yet to hear either way.

edit: Thanks for all the answers! Definitely helped calm the concerns about this sort of false-positive.

aclelland··on UK centralised contact-tracing app probably won't work well, may be illegal
Could someone explain how the new APIs that are being proposed by Google/Apple will actually be delivered to Android handsets? I'm running a 2 year old Android device which generally gets security updates 2-3 months behind Google devices. Will I be at the mercy of my phone manufacturer before I'll be able to use the new Google/iOS apps?
aclelland··on Redis 6.0 GA
As well as caching, we make really heavy use of Redis for Leaderboards for our games. The sorted sets are perfect for storing score along with the userid. Scanning the leaderboard, finding neighboring scores, etc are all really fast operations. This could probably be done with a number of other storage system but we already used Redis and we've never had a problem.
aclelland··on Google Meet premium video conferencing is now free for everyone
I'd have probably have had to do this but luckily I have an old phone that I can use for my work account. I just really don't like linking work and personal accounts at a device level given the multiple ways that might cause problems.

Thinking on it a little more, I guess that since this product has been generally aimed at businesses, maybe this isn't normally a problem for people with company devices.

aclelland··on Google Meet premium video conferencing is now free for everyone
Second paragraph says _with availability rolling out over the coming weeks_ so it looks like it might take a while for some people to get access.
aclelland··on Google Meet premium video conferencing is now free for everyone
This is great, we've been using Meet a lot since WFH started and it's been pretty solid and decent enough quality.

My only gripe and unless I'm missing it, it's not possible to log into Meet on Android without also logging into the Google account on the device too. This is frustrating because sometimes I want to jump on a work call but all I've got is my personal device handy. I really wish they'd separate out Meet App users from Device users like the iOS version of the app :(

aclelland··on GitHub for mobile is now available
If you were already logged in through your default browser it'll use that to authenticate you through oauth.
aclelland··on Brave Passes 10M Monthly Active Users, Sees 19% Growth Since 1.0 Launch
I've looked at verify a site that I control through Brave to start earning some BAT tokens but I'm really not to keen to have to also give PII (government photo and a selfie) to their only payment processor Upstart.

I'm not familiar at all with this company and I'd really rather not go giving them data just to earn revenue on my site that Brave has taken away by blocking ads.

Could someone who's more familiar with Upstart assuage my concerns? Are they legit, have they got a good track record?

aclelland··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
Just for anyone who'd like some confirmation of this. Their official Twitter account it's also saying the same[1]

I'm glad they listened to the feedback but their attitude towards people who wrote in with bugs/criticism should also be learned from. Being told 'We know what's best for you, we're not reverting the changes' was pretty insulting.
