> Beefing up security at each organization isn’t fixing the underlying problem. It’s just making the next entity the more likely target.

This reminds me of the old saying about locking your bicycle on the street. It won't 100% prevent yours from being stolen, but if the other bikes around yours has less secure means of locking, then the thief will likely take those bikes instead of yours.

Really nice! I noticed however that the verification email that gets sent to you after you register has the name/address of 'webmaster@local' rather than <username>@projectlovelace.net.

Speaking of registration, it would be nice if we could log in using our Google accounts (ie. Sign in with <service>), rather than make another account with your site.

Also it would be nice if the site picked up your preferred language of choice after you've done at least one of the problems. I like coding in javascript, but I have to select it from the dropdown list each time I go into a problem to solve, and sometimes I forget to do so (defaulting to Python instead)

> "Don't use tables, use CSS!" was a big message.

It was, but in hindsight maybe the message needed to be elaborated more. Perhaps it should've been "Don't use tables for layout, use CSS!"

Besides that, CSS IMO accelerated more complex and visually pleasing websites, and arguably spurned on the Web 2.0 look. Unfortunately, due to the message not specifying the for layout bit, it took a while for many devs to unlearn that tables are bad – tables aren't, they should just be used for tabular data.

acherion··on Papercraft Models of Computers
I made the Amiga 500 papercraft model from this site but had stuck the print-out to some card to give the model a bit of heft, and made my very own Amiga 500 Christmas ornament. I couldn't find a way to include the mouse nicely (without it just dangling there) so I left it off. I enjoyed making the model and it looked great on my tree!

It got very buggy over the past 12 months or so. I needed something more reliable, so I switched to the Gmail web-client (my workplace is using Gmail for business)

Great work! I look forward to using this.

Not sure if this has been mentioned in the comments yet (I came across this post 100+ comments later), but one thing I miss terribly after leaving AirMail was the ability to write markdown in email. I absolutely loved the split-pane window when writing an email, and see it update in real-time as I write my markdown'ed email.

I am on the web-client for Gmail for now, and although there are browser plugins for MD, they feel quite clunky to use. It would be great if you could consider MD support in composing emails!

acherion··on Let’s Draw Together
I don't think you're crazy. I would rather not see that kind of stuff myself.
acherion··on Let’s Draw Together
That's really odd. I'm not disputing what you see on your end, but in my install of Divoom for iOS, I can't see those artworks, even if I search for "nazi flag" from within the Galleria screen.
acherion··on Let’s Draw Together
That's odd, I'm not a daily Divoom user myself but I do use it often, and I have never seen any nazism or drug symbols in their galleries. Where exactly did you see this kind of imagery?
acherion··on American Phrase Book
It should be pointed out that the word 'Seppo' meaning American comes from the rhyming slang of a septic tank rhyming with 'yank', and then seppo being the shortened form of septic tank.
acherion··on The Ultimate-64 board
Yes. The newly pressed cases are the original molds from Commodore for the C64C, and that model C64 can accommodate any C64 mainboard. Since this new Ultimate-64 is compatible with C64 cases, in turn it's also compatible with these newly pressed ones.
acherion··on Amiga emulator in pure JavaScript and HTML5
That's pretty awesome. On my 27" iMac (2012 model) it struggles a bit with copper functions though, making the sound slow down.
acherion··on How to fix yellowed plastics on old computers [video]
Although this looks like it works if / when completed correctly, many retro computer collectors have found that after a couple of years or so, the yellowing returns.

The retrobright solution only removes yellowing from the surface. Over time, the bromine resurfaces and the case gets yellowed again. The difference though is that now your plastic is slightly more brittle thanks to the retrobright process, so in fact you're worse off now than before.
