account_taken··on Ask HN: Who built XMLHttpRequest at Microsoft in 1999?
Wow everybody serious on ycombinator. Can't even make a joke about Al Gore anymore.
account_taken··on Ask HN: Who built XMLHttpRequest at Microsoft in 1999?
Ajax started with Al Gore, without whom the internet would have never been invented :p
account_taken··on Apple to release OS X 10.9 with new power-user features, more from iOS
I tried Ubuntu 12.10 again briefly and was disappointed that intel HD4000 wasn't fully supported in 3D. Graphics is dog slow in Ubuntu on the same hardware.

It looks like shopping spies still on by default in 13.04. I doubt I'll ever use Ubuntu again on that principle alone. Even Apple doesn't force that on you in Spotlight. Still cannot move taskbar. Still cannot resize taskbar without 3D support.

account_taken··on Apple to release OS X 10.9 with new power-user features, more from iOS
These look like good moves. While Microsoft and Ubuntu are shunning their desktop users, Apple is making me look the smarter for choosing a company who still stands believes in a desktop OS :)

FYI, I was a decade long Windows user who switched to Mac then to Ubuntu then back to Mac after Unity.

account_taken··on Collection of the best fonts for programming
Why did he color certain characters? It makes those chars standout which defeats the purpose of choosing a font for distinct shapes.
account_taken··on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail Review
Just wondering how many people have actually installed Bing Desktop, Google Desktop or any other desktop search on Windows. Why does Ubuntu think their more discriminating user base need these SMART search features when the common John and Jane shunned it?

It's all about privacy and companies trying to get you to buy more things are the worst offenders of viruses and invasion of privacy on the web.

ty, never heard of that one
account_taken··on A simple dark theme and accompanying color scheme for Sublime Text 2
Nice, almost fits my desktop perfectly! Here's what it looks like on #! (crunchbang).

Some suggestions:

* replace folder icons with simple triangle arrows * change structure of github repo so we can just clone it into packages

account_taken··on How An Apple Star Lost His Luster At JC Penney
How do these CEOs make the noobest mistake? Know your customer base! JC Penney was never an upscale department store. Did he all of the sudden think it would become one with a stagnant economy? Common sense. I think this guy lucky with Apple. He was just at the right place, at the right time.
account_taken··on Setting up Sublime Text 2
What bootstraps package manager?
account_taken··on Setting up Sublime Text 2
+1

Actually, things are stored in a few directories. It took a while to figure out where Sublime stores everything so I could write a dotfiles script for it.

Having to set things up through Package Manager is a pain. Not sure why that's the first step whenever I read an article on Sublime. A simple package file script that git clones/pulls plugins is more maintainable.

account_taken··on Setting up Sublime Text 2
I just wish Sublime didn't have a mine of its own. It has a bad habit of rewriting my config with my comments removed.
account_taken··on Geocities Bootstrap Theme
Thanks for reminding me how cool my geocities pages were. Flat UI meh. I got the hammer with baloon pants bringing life to my page!
account_taken··on I Bought a Bitcoin
Not sure if Bitcoins are a good investment. All it takes is a western country (say Switzerland) to create an online currency and Bitcoins will sink faster than a Carnival ship.
account_taken··on Everyone Who Tried to Convince Me to use Vim was Wrong (2010)
I think some of us die hards push the pure vim way too hard. For example, while in insert mode

`end` is easier than `esc A` `ctrl+home` easier then `esc g g i` ...

Yehuda's advice isn't so bad. If the purpose is to be as efficient as possible, which is what I think most of us strive for, then why not use the extra keys? It took several weeks, actually months to become productive in Vim. Learning was a cycle of try Vim, get frustrated, go back to modeless editor until there is some down time, repeat. Vim bootcamp wasn't any fun.

account_taken··on Blink: A rendering engine for the Chromium project
Competition is good. Nobody wants to be left behind by Google, so time for Apple and MS to step it up again.
account_taken··on Callbacks are imperative, promises are functional
These kinds problems can easily be solved with promises too. It would be even simpler if `fs.stat` returned a promise and there are promise libraries that do that. Promises is a small library I use, probably about the same number of bytes as your library, as I transition my code from callbacks to promises.

      var queue = new Promises;
      fs.stat("file1.txt", queue.cb());
      fs.stat("file2.txt", queue.cb());
      fs.stat("file2.txt", queue.cb());
      queue.all()
        .then()
        .fail();
But, comparing how promises solves the same flow as callbacks misses the point. Here's an example where an action is taken when two events fire (promises shine here):

      pub.on('foo', function() {
        promise1.fulfill();
      });
      pub.on('bar', function() {
        promise2.fullfill();
      });
      Vow.all([promise1, promise2]).then(...).fail(...);
account_taken··on Microsoft Build 2013 Conference to be June 26-28 in SF
$1600, you woud think MS would be doing everything they can to entice developers, dbas and sysadmins by making these conferences free. They threw hundreds of millions away on the Xbox, why not invest in the the people that can save their empire from crumbling?

Visual Studio Pro should be free just like Xcode.

account_taken··on Negative space logos and symbols
Never noticed the arrow, and it seems I'm not the only one. The font weight and contrasting colors overpower the subtle negative space.
account_taken··on Oracle Is Bleeding At The Hands Of Database Rivals
All I can say is DBase IV. If you don't innovate, you will get replaced. They're trying to do too much. Stick to your bread and butter.
account_taken··on JavaScript integration between Sublime Text and Chrome DevTools
I know some are salivating over this but it's still far behind the DevTools built into Chrome. For example, how do you inspect the DOM? How you do you look at generated runtime elements? How do you inspect cascaded styles? Why use two tools when the other is just a proxy to a subset of the functionality built into Chrome's dev tools?
account_taken··on Draw UML Sequence Diagrams with new Javascript library
In case anyone is looking for a more complete solution, search PlantUML. It supports almost all UML diagrams. I use sequence, class and activity diagrams.

PlantUML uses Java. Theming support in PlantUML is horribad.

account_taken··on We are currently taking a DDoS attack and are working to mitigate
This is the reason I love git---distributed. I can keep on keeping on despite these silly attacks (if they really are DDoS).
account_taken··on HipChat is now free for teams of 5 users or fewer
Google+ hangouts rock for development teams. The multiple screenshares is great for looking over someone's shoulder and getting feedback from your peers. It's the first thing I turn on in the morning.

BTW, you don't have to share your entire screen just the app you want them to see.

account_taken··on Linode NextGen: The Hardware
That's suprising, when I benchmarked I/O on several DigitalOcean VPS I was getting mechanical disk performance. Which plan are you running? 10-20x faster is kind of high, are you sure you weren't hitting a cache? I usually see around a 5x speed increase on a good host with sSD.
account_taken··on Wanted: People Willing to Die on Mars
Good plot for a movie.
account_taken··on My Take on CoffeeScript
One cannot be proficient in CoffeeScript without being proficient in JavaScript. How could they debug anything?
account_taken··on My Take on CoffeeScript
CoffeeScript is more readable if you follow Visual Basic paren rules. Visual Basic, at least the one I used way back when, differentiates between functions and subroutines. Functions whose return values are used in an expression must use parentheses. Subroutines and functions used as subroutines omit parentheses.

Example, I often see this. In this trivial example the intent is simple. In real code this style is unnecessary cleverness.

    a b c, d e
In VB, since the return value of `b` and `d` are used, parentheses must be added

    a b(c, d(e))
account_taken··on Swapbox (YC W13) Launches And Aims To Pick Up Where Bufferbox Left Off
The reason I use Amazon is so I don't have to drive anywhere to pick stuff up. It's there when I get home. If I wanted to go somewhere to pick it up, I'd go to a B&M. Or tell UPS/FedEx to not deliver and I'll pick it up.
account_taken··on Rethinking Backbone.js View Rendering
Try https://github.com/mgutz/funcd. It's straight up CoffeeScript functions patterned after Markaby, Erector. Other CoffeeScript templates we tried did funky things with the context and closures didn't work as expected.

And when performance is a concern, you can't beat string interpolation within CoffeeScript heredoc strings.
