accidc··on On social reality in China
I grew up in the third world. Agree with this comment.

Also my personal belief is that courtesy is a luxury born of abundance. I have observed how minor ‘scarcities’ in the advanced economies can surface behaviour that some would attribute to less developed places e.g. an unexpected slew of cancelled transit

accidc··on Coding is not solved
We could always build, more reliable software. The powers that be however (broadly generalizing) only care about solving the ‘problem’ superficially.

Therefore, we will end up with requests to do more (at the current level of quality/ reliability), as opposed to building better software

accidc··on AX – Google’s Open Agentic Orchestrator
Or if it becomes commercially valuable, then you can expect Google to take a third direction (embrace, extend, extinguish) : a la their current approach with android
accidc··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
What a leap of judgement
accidc··on What's the largest software project AI can complete on its own?
How near/far is that future ?

Cuz what if a human has to intervene as the LLM can’t get it right?

Assuming a human then has till be able to comprehend it?

accidc··on Waymo robotaxi hits a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica
It depends. A driver may have seen a child dart behind a car and expect them to emerge on the other side.

Does Waymo have the same object permanence and trajectory prediction (combined) to that of a human?

Once the video evidence it out, it might become evident.

Generally Waymo seems to be a responsible actor so maybe that is the case and this can help demonstrate potential benefits of autonomous vehicles.

Alternatively, if even they can't get this right then it may cast doubts about the maturity of the entire ecosystem

accidc··on A macOS app that blurs your screen when you slouch
Very cool. I did something extremely similar for a personal project.

However, I was not familiar with Swift, the app was more or less vibe coded.

My next goal was to learn swift patterns to refactor the app into something that was understood and robust.

I will be reading though your sources to understand production quality Swift!!

accidc··on Nuclear energy key to decarbonising Europe, says EESC
I think nuclear has parallel to mainframes. Capital intensive, long lead time, expensive to operate/maintain/dispose and practically irrelevant in the day of distributed (computing) generation and storage.

It’s uncanny how the narrative rhymes: we have insanely capable portable computing devices at price points that are accessible to every person across the planet. Similarly, distributed generation (and storage) are already bringing electricity to people who have no real chance of being on the grid ever.

I see no way the economics working out for nuclear, except for niche uses.

I can even imagine the grid being something relegated for long range / high intensity applications (instead of household distribution) in a few hundred years

accidc··on Home Depot GitHub token exposed for a year, granted access to internal systems
No. You are likely and automatically extrapolating the attention to detail seen in the outcome into believing that it is a reflection of the attention , thought and method of their internal workings.

Which is a good indicator, but you can’t be sure of. Additionally you may imagine liking it but not enjoy it in life, even if true.

accidc··on 10 years of writing a blog nobody reads
I captured a very similar thought in the footnotes of one of my comments here.

A numerical distillation of our aggregated thoughts will live on for potentially longer than any ordinary person could have hoped for (and maybe wanted).

We actually get our own slice of immortality.

accidc··on DIY NAS: 2026 Edition
Do you have a preferred/recommendation for a NAS OS?
accidc··on Show HN: Pi Co-pilot – Evaluation of AI apps made easy
I think naming things co-pilot is getting excessive. Its just diluting your potential brand with MSFT and the term itself seems to be meaningless now.

While MSFT may not own co-pilot, they definitely control the mindshare.

accidc··on What happened to American manufacturing is not unusual
As long as we understand that the ‘want’ may originate beyond what individuals desire. e.g. the state may want agricultural production to be in-house for food security or have sufficient industrial capacity for national security

So these measures (public/investments) would be instituted to fulfill these ‘wants’

accidc··on I failed a take-home assignment from Kagi Search
Within the article, he details his attempts to get clarity/feedback and the response of the hiring manager is as vague as it gets
accidc··on I failed a take-home assignment from Kagi Search
“but to deal with ambiguity and open-endedness, which is essential in R&D projects like Kagi Labs”…. Also based on the nonsense responses by the hiring manager, it sounds like one of 2 things

Either someone had a vision and is saying ‘Read my mind’

The alternative explanation seems to be, there is no vision, and the interviewee needs to define it.

In either scenario, the amount of communication, feedback, specificity, lack of respect for the power dynamics is appalling.

accidc··on Monetal – Free Expense Tracker
not sure if this is the right place to point out, I tried installing the windows store version but it seemed unavailable. I am wondering if the app is restricted to only specific regions.
accidc··on GPT-4 apparently can't recite the litany against fear from Dune
Certainly! Its just that now I can objectively discern the difference in responses (lack of made up citations): while earlier it was merely a feeling of mine that chatGPT was getting 'worse' somehow. And I feel the loss of a fairly useful tool. Consequently I am voting with my wallet.

Thanks, I do intend to explore the API when I have time. For now, ChatGPT was the lowest 'effort' (just throw money at it) in terms of exploring/leveraging LLMs. I sincerely hope the API exposes the real gpt, I read a twitter thread about a new content-filtering attributes being introduced in the response

accidc··on GPT-4 apparently can't recite the litany against fear from Dune
I am certain a sanitizing layer has been added over chatgpt[1], which makes it all but useless. its responses are too deterministic now. Earlier, it used to happily regurgitate studies that did not exist and provide made up links. This was actually still very useful as key terms from the response could then be used to formulate searches that would bypass the garbage that typically turns up in google (or other engine's) front page.

Now any request to chatgpt start with a long-winded spiel about its cutoff date, another one about how not to trust it and ends with another one about how one might perform a google search. Another commenter here noted that it sounds most like a clickbait article generator.."Here are 5 extremely generic things you need....". It will continue to happily apologize and ignore any instructions that you provide it to the contrary

I have cancelled my subscription. I guess I just need to rant as it was the first tool that allowed me to move away from google. It was the first tool that allowed me to augment my capabilities. I guess, now its just as good[2].

[1]<https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35983824> [2]<https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36373854>

P.S: Just before posting this rant, I just realized this comment is going to be used to train a future model. A part of my 'soul' is destined to live a rather long time as a part of a set weights in some model. The absurdity of that makes it extremely humorous, will AIs be able to self-amuse (chatgpt helped me find one word that means to make oneself laugh) ?

accidc··on For anyone who has been turned down by 38 companies
A piece of advice from someone who wanted to work at startups.Having realized that its unlikely that my skills will translate to doing well at startup interviews, its only pragmatic to not pursue that path. But my end goal is not to work at a startup, its to keep learning and to stay relevant/employable and those can be done outside of a startup.

Any interview that is structured like a test is a bad interview. Starting your relationship with an abusive process will set the tone of the relationship and I applaud all those who have walked away from interviews that make one jump through hoops. From personal experience, The last interview I took lasted 40 minutes and the person we hired is the best developer I know.

I was never confident at giving interviews until my mindset changed from it being a test to an exchange where someone who needs help is trying to get together with me, someone who can help them. They should able to explain to me how they see me helping them. Questions like: 'what is your biggest challenge right now' or 'if I were hired, what would be the first task' help start that conversation. They obviously will do their due diligence and I need to do mine (collaborative environment, sane hours, reasonable pay, competent management etc.)

All of the above is opinion.

accidc··on For anyone who has been turned down by 38 companies
There have been a few articles on the hiring/interviewing practices. As someone who has not worked/interviewed in a startup, I have a few rhetorical yet sincere questions:

Does every startup implement their own algorithms etc. from scratch. Isn't it the reason why we have libraries? I thought most software was mostly glue/crud.

Do engineers at startup only code? Do they never talk to customers or need to clarify requirements or work on timelines or deal with scope creep, since it seems that these skills aren't evaluated at interviews.

If the answer to these questions is what I think it should be, to what end do we have this dog and pony show?

accidc··on Sony Digital Paper e-ink PDF tablet for notes and forms
The Bridgestone Aerobee was another device that seemed fit all the specifications for a electronic notebook. Bridgestone had teamed up with a Delta Electronics to bring these out but killed it.

Does anyone know how qr-lpd compares to e-ink?

accidc··on The Quiet Ones
It amuses me when people from western countries complain about noise(most comments contain clues to location).

Having lived most of my life in India, noise has never been an issue for me, even while doing tasks that require intense concentration. It's like the brain implements a band pass filter for most ambient noise, you never notice it. I have also noticed that the more I concentrate on a task at hand, the less I notice anything else around me.

On the other hand, I have been living outside India for the past few years and I notice noise a lot more.

Make what you want of this but it has lead me to believe that our perception of noise is a function of our state of mind, the ambient noise level and our conditioning/habituation. The takeaway being that it is possible to learn to ignore noise, since in most situations one may not be able to control the source of the noise.

accidc··on 3 Things Self-Taught Developers Missed
I found the article useful. As a self taught programmer who works in enterprise software using procedural programming, I was missing knowledge of design patterns and Big O.

Having dabbled in Java recently, I found myself struggling with design patterns. I realized a bit late that I should read up on design patterns.

This post hit home for me at least (although I do unit test :))

accidc··on "Startup rollercoaster" isn't even the half of it
off topic but to me living with no regrets does not mean literally that. Sometimes it means not regretting just one of action/outcome. Sometimes it means knowing that you did to the best of your abilities. And sometimes it means (eventually) accepting your fallibility.

e.g: not too happy about taking that chance, but happy that had the courage to take that chance.
