access_denied··on The One in Which I Say Open Source Software Sucks
GIMP and Inkscape are not ready for prime-time. (And as always at this point: They lack proper support for CMYK, Fonts, Color-Management, Workflow in big publishing and printing shops.) Never mind the usability desaster that the GIMP represents for anyone who is accustomed to PS.
access_denied··on Ask HN: Shouldn't the algorithm discount popular sites(TC) for frontpage?
The list should be generated and voted-up-on by the community. (y/n)
access_denied··on New Media companies should emphasize "media" over "new"
"Here in Silicon Value there can be a tendency to overemphasize product and technology and underemphasize ad sales." No, according to the model your article pushes, this product is the AOL-part from your example. Coherences.

Suits tend to remind me of a dog who eagerly waits the stick gets thrown, so he already can run in the right direction.

access_denied··on Friedman: Invent, Invent, Invent
It's basically the historical version of the internship. Craftsman would work together with collegues from other regions of the country, they learn the tricks of the trade of each other.
access_denied··on Friedman: Invent, Invent, Invent
The German system (What SKorea and Japan took as blueprint to design theirs) goes like this. After High School you do 1 of 2 things (doing none is not accepted from society, well it happens, but is seen as fail): you either do prolonged High, which means you qualify for studying at University (wich is dirt cheap) or you take the route of learning what we call a profession (It's different word usage from US). What this means is, you work 3 years in an industry as apprentice (almost full-time). That's how the talk goes: "What do you do?" "I am making an apprenticeship". In parallel you go to "professional school" to learn some theoretical stuff. That is the basic qualification everyone has over here. You can upgrade by going to college or making a "Master", again different meaning from US usage. Or you can just stay that way. But basically everyone has a basic qualification and a home industry. This has produced a quality workforce (so far).
access_denied··on Marketing is what hurts startups. If you have a loyal tribe how hard can it be?
Well, they build Las Vegas out of an Oasis.
access_denied··on Marketing is what hurts startups. If you have a loyal tribe how hard can it be?
It's not only buzz-creation. Website copy and usabilty is often overlooked or bad executed.
access_denied··on FreeDOS is 15 years old
I guess we can find some use cases that qualify as important. But who cares about the rounded number?
access_denied··on Ask HN: Who/What would you have liked to have heard in college?
Not necessarily Paul, but in any case someone who has something to say about how the industry developed and is likely to develop. The historical / economic context in which you will work.
access_denied··on US Patent 5255452 (or: Why Michael Jackson was a Hacker)
He used the hack, that makes him a 'dance-hacer if such concept exists. No need to be the inventor of the hack itself.
access_denied··on Kevin Rose: How to Promote Your Web App
He mentions it on 0:31 in the video.
access_denied··on Can I continue to be a freelancer? For life?
1. You mean 'save' not 'sure'. (It's the same in my native tongue, too.) 2. About the security of working for one or for many companies. Job security stems from your skills. If you are good and do hard work, than you will find new clients.
access_denied··on Can I continue to be a freelancer? For life?
I have a few thoughts on that, because my work/life concept is basically the same as yours.

1. Extra financial security and these things. I honestly belive the best way to secure a good future in this areas is to get into farming somehow. Not necessarily doing the work on the land you don't want to do, but having access to foods you actually know how they were generated is the point. For example one could form a group of like-minded people and have one local farmer as some sort of service provider. Something along that line will be far more important in the next decades than the thing with the car.

2. To make a career out of freelancing, the key is always raising your rates. There are copywriters who earn ~30,000$ per assignment (which they say takes 4-5 weeks). Well, you can count these with the finger of one hand, but the principle is the point. That means, if you want to earn more it is not required for you to un-freelance.

3. Instead of founding an agency you can develop trusted teams for various kinds of works. So you can have the adventure of working on bigger projects if you like or check out other industries than your "home play".

4. The passive income thing does not mean you have to do products (and thusly becoming a manager/owner again). You can have a couple of projects where you get paid with royalties, at least partly.

access_denied··on The iPhone Software Revolution
I think the issue is what you called the legalware. And I agree with you: the legalware on the iPhone prevents it form beeing a full-fledged personal computer. OTOH the OP has a point: the legalware on the iPhone is far less restrictive than the legalware on other cell-phones (and other closed hardware like playstations). Is it enough to talk of a quantum leap? Maybe yes.
access_denied··on JWZ ports xdaliclock to Palm WebOS by rewriting it in Javascript
Yes, but which abstraction layer in the WebOS is unnecessary? I think I disagree with JWZ on this one. Is it really better to have for instance all the formating capabilities of CSS built into the Desktop-OS' native widget set? Than you would have to coordinate your OS development with the development of the CSS specifications.
access_denied··on Lessons learned in 30 years of programming
Specially when you are self-employed you should open up the barrier. This brings interchange of ideas. It is not only you who gives knowledge away, you also receive insights and ideas from people _inside_ your target industries. How else do you want to stay up to date in your race against an ever faster changing worldwide knowledge base?
access_denied··on Is Execution More Important Than Vision?
Execution in the right direction needs vision. Original question from TechCrunch is stoo-pid. It's like asking if you want the car with tyres or an engine.
access_denied··on Bill Gates: “Our Most Potent Operating System Competitor is Linux”
Statement: "Where does the money come from? Mostly Windows and Office. This revenue streams are beginning to dry out."

These are well known facts. The yearly income fluctuations do not matter, Microsofts problems are of structural matters. The markets for Windows and Office are more and more saturated and not growing any more. http://www.redorbit.com/news/technology/375410/microsofts_ca...

access_denied··on Please review my site: Pinkdy.com (fertility calendar)
The copy on the home page is good, thumbs up for that!

I am not so sure about the color-sheme. Do you think redish is the way to go with that topic? I am not sure myself but somehow I have never seen a packaging for baby-pills or so using that color. I think it provokes un-good associations. (Yeah, while beeing the perfect fit, but there are moments in where not stating the obvious is the prefered way).

access_denied··on Bill Gates: “Our Most Potent Operating System Competitor is Linux”
Projectnatal is a demo, not a project. It is overhype. Surface is innovative? How so? What can we do with Surface that is new and well, brings some kind of advancement?
access_denied··on Bill Gates: “Our Most Potent Operating System Competitor is Linux”
Where does the money come from? Mostly Windows and Office. This revenue streams are beginning to dry out. They will still makes billions with them over the next years, but all in all the revenue from these sources will diminish. Other income streams will come from server stuff which will be sold via services of different kinds. This will change the MS business model to something akin what Oracle and IBM are doing.
access_denied··on Fake Steve Jobs returns
He already had a paid magazine gig, he just changed it for another one.
access_denied··on Ask HN: How do I teach myself to be a salesman?
What the heck is doleaf.com? "It is just budding at the moment, do some wierd geek stuff"

Learn to speak the language of your customers.

Also, what is doleaf? Something with plants I guess, what does it do for me? I couldn't figure this out (by glancing over the homepage).

access_denied··on Ask HN: consultancy, how to?
Here in the german advertising scene the standard comission for an "successful recommendation" is about 15% no questions asked.
access_denied··on The California State of Mind (As a Cancer on Atlanta)
> But the way it destroys you is by failing to get users, and that is not a function of your location.

Well, it is easier to meet Joe Influencer at the evening at build up some buzz if the flight to the 'party where this guy got an invitation to doesn't take too long.

access_denied··on No, 37Signals, Planning Is Not What You Think
Call me naive, but I believe 37sigs want also to change how american small businesses operate. It's not just trolling they really want to change how certain people think.
access_denied··on Indie games: Still Too Cheap. Getting Cheaper.
> most successful practitioners of the craft...and often they are so successful by virtue of skills other than the craft itself.

And this is the reason why doing games development on your own is not game development. If you want successfully market your games (and make a living fromit) your end up doing a whole lot of tasks totally unrelated to game coding. It's almost like having that day job again. It is really a "band" job: you need more than one payer. If you start up with a team and you are the coder, than you have chance.

access_denied··on How to use Social Capital to Market Your Web App
I guess the basic principles from the article apply nonetheless. It's just the "media" are different, like using a telephone line for customer service, appearing at real-world events in person and so on.
access_denied··on Url Shorteners: Destroying the Web Since 2002
Many non-geeks don't understand the whole URL thing in the first place. If you really want to save it, than educate the masses.
