access_denied··on Ask HN: Bad habits
I have many bad habits. My absolute top-success in overcoming them was getting rid of smoking cigs. And I really mean, getting rid of it, even in my thinking. You see, the nicotine addiction is just the minor part in smoking, it is not that hard, other drugs are harder to get rid of in my experience. But the manipulation in your thinking that comes with years-long smoking, that is astonishing. And the main factor that makes it hard to quit smoking is a deep fear that life will never again be as awesome as it was with the cigs (even if the smoking destroys so much life moments all the time).

I got rid of it by reading the book "Easy way out" by Allen Carr. I highly recommend his stuff. I did read the book 3 times in a row until all the thinking damage in my head was gone. But then it was gone and after smoking heavily for 8 years I am now out for over 6 years.

If you think about quitting smoking, try Allen Carrs method, I truly recommend it, from man to man ;-)

Apple delivers it-just-works to me. And the price is absolutely ok for that, not a premium at all. Years ago I bought a Commodore, because the alternative was better, but priced at a premium, it was called Indigo. And I was not willing to pay the premium, too much money. The "premium" Apple wants doesn't feel like a premium at all.
access_denied··on Ask HN: What do you think makes a good teacher?
Depends also on where you teach - in front of a class? In a video lecture? One to one? It is certainly a skill to get a mob of teenagers listen to you for +30 minutes without anyone involved dying (in one way or the other).
access_denied··on Facebook Acquires FriendFeed
Assuming that this type of information is worth anything, Friendfeed delivers insight into corelations like 'how many FB users also do use SN XYZ regularly', or not?
access_denied··on Programming
I meant my comment as a positive hint to things like this Linus did in the past. Linus always was a good advertiser.

> Did I mention that I seem to have some OCD issues?

As an advertising guy I love how L is basically saying: when submitting to reddigg print "Linus Torvalds has problems with OCD".

access_denied··on Should Programming Work be Billed in Hours?
No, to answer the original question. But I've heard it ties well to agile dev methods.

The long-term plan is to drop support for Flash on YT, isn't it?

Compared to Donald Knuth he is young.
access_denied··on Guy Kawasaki: Will anyone pay for anything?
And Gmail stands out as the one web-app that the kids love. Woot, they love the one innovative web-app that really improved something? Unbelievable.
access_denied··on Apple Wants To Build A PayPal Killer, Say Wall Street Gossips
Every industry has its barrier to entry, it is likely that the one for banking is probably at an historical low. Also Branson of Virgin said in an interview that he is applying for a license(or looking into it), so at least one of them actually does is for sure.
access_denied··on It's SO over: cool cyberkids abandon social networking sites
Cool cyberkids never were on social networking sites. Heck, they never even used a browser. They mail themselves single webpages and check them out in GNUS. Cheech. Really.
access_denied··on Apple Wants To Build A PayPal Killer, Say Wall Street Gossips
Well, one thing is clear: anybody who has billions of cash on the high side and his mind at the right place, will now, at this tim in history, investigate if he should enter the banking industry in some form or another.

Talk is cheap. If you really care than I see you contributing to an OSS desktop project.
access_denied··on GNU Emacs 23.1 has been released
Not funny me thinks, but much better, in a modern art sense interesting, very clean concept. He should do 20 of them and see what evolves out of that.

And thanks for the cover!

access_denied··on Ask HN: Do you aggregate your social networks/what do you use?
What I do: browser bookmarks + regular calendar reminders "should I visit network xyz?". (No email notifications or anything.)

If I could design a service... It would pick the _type_ of new stuff of each network of my choosing and aggregate like a Feedreader. With type I mean for example: new entries on my wall in a given Ning community, but no personal messages and aggregate those together with friend requests on Facebook.

I cannot answer the question, but I immediately thought of 4-hour-work-week, because in that book the author describes a system involving 2 goals which I found quite handy.

You choose 2 goals, than you set a dreamline for each one. The first gets a dreamline 6 months from now, the other 12 months down the road. Now the nice thing is, 6 months later you can set another 12 months goal and will have again, one 6 month goal and one 12 month goal. That's nice because that way you have one project more in the beginning phase and another one in the finishing phase.

access_denied··on Maker's Schedule, Manager's Schedule
And the origin of this problem is hidden in his first paragraph: most MBA-types do not have a real conception of their jobs. (Just compare that to athletes, teachers or those technicians that even have a cute name for their profession.)

How does the overall point of the paragraph / article change when we change the job title of the people who create the templates?

The same applies to Commodore.
access_denied··on Seth's Blog: How to make graphs that work
Godin didn't mean "programmers", he did mean "corporate drones". But that's his target audience. So he writes "programmers" to give his audience somebody to distinguish themselves a bit, like "if you make awesome presentations you are not so un-hip like those".
access_denied··on Why are there no Googles, Microsofts, Twitters, Facebooks etc from UK?
Apricot Computers was awesome. ARM, BBC Micro, Acorn.
access_denied··on Ask HN RE: Company's responsibilities to the open source community
You don't do a morning prayer to the holy Edison just because your alarm clock woke you up. Clearly I don't think there is a requirement to give back. It is just utterly stupid not to give back. If you don't nuture the community that feeds you, you just show short-sightedness (and that's bad for you).
access_denied··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
I can't answer for plinkplonk but my guess is, for CS learning purposes, Forth paired with Lisp is a combination like pizza and beer (as opposed to pizza and sandwich).
